Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Download or read book Optimizing Stormwater Treatment Practices written by Andrew J. Erickson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimizing Stormwater Treatment Practices: A Handbook of Assessment and Maintenance provides the information necessary for developing and operating an effective maintenance program for stormwater treatment. The book offers instructions on how to measure the level of performance of stormwater treatment practices directly and bases proposed maintenance schedules on actual performance and historical maintenance efforts and costs. The inspection methods, which are proven in the field and have been implemented successfully, are necessary as regulatory agencies are demanding evaluations of the performance of stormwater treatment practices. The authors have developed a three-tiered approach that offers readers a standard protocol for how to determine the effectiveness of stormwater treatment practices currently in place.

Book Synopsis Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management: Plug and pray by : Francois Clemens
Download or read book Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management: Plug and pray written by Francois Clemens and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the advancements made in applied metrology in the field of Urban Drainage and Storm water Management over the past two decades in scientific research as well as in practical applications. Given the broadness of this subject (measuring principles, uncertainty in data, data validation, data storage and communication, design, maintenance and management of monitoring networks, technical details of sensor technology), the focus is on water quantity and a sound metrological basis. The book offers common ground for academics and practitioners when setting up monitoring projects in urban drainage and storm water management. This will enable an easier exchange of results so as to allow for a faster scientific progress in the field. A second, but equally important goal, is to allow practitioners access to scientific developments and gained experience when it comes to monitoring urban drainage and storm water systems. In-depth description of international case studies covering all aspects discussed in the book are presented, along with self-training exercises and codes available for readers on a companion website.

Book Synopsis Water Sensitive Urban Design by : Jacqueline Hoyer
Download or read book Water Sensitive Urban Design written by Jacqueline Hoyer and published by Jovis Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years, techniques and legislation for decentralized storm-water management have advanced all over the world. However, decentralized storm-water management systems are still under-utilized and acceptance among citizens and professionals is still lacking. Yet management of this issue will be essential for the sustainable development of cities in the future. Thus acceptance of the systems must be improved. The main question that needs to be answered is how can sustainable storm-water management be integrated with urban design in order to create safe, liveable, sustainable, and attractive cities? This manual, developed by the Hafen City University of Hamburg, provides an overview of a Water Sensitive Urban Design approach and creates principles for a successful strategy focused on the topics: Water Sensitivity, Aesthetics, Functionality, Usability, Public Perception and Acceptance, as well as Integrative Planning. It furthermore presents an international selection of case studies ranging from small scale (site level) up to large scale (city level), demonstrating the WSUD principles in the context of the temperate climates.

Book Synopsis Urban Street Stormwater Guide by : National Association of City Transportation Officials
Download or read book Urban Street Stormwater Guide written by National Association of City Transportation Officials and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Urban Street Stormwater Guide begins from the principle that street design can support--or degrade--the urban area's overall environmental health. By incorporating Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) into the right-of-way, cities can manage stormwater and reap the public health, environmental, and aesthetic benefits of street trees, planters, and greenery in the public realm. Building on the successful NACTO urban street guides, the Urban Street Stormwater Guide provides the best practices for the design of GSI along transportation corridors. The state-of-the-art solutions in this guide will assist urban planners and designers, transportation engineers, city officials, ecologists, public works officials, and others interested in the role of the built urban landscape in protecting the climate, water quality, and natural environment.
