The authors present an imaginative and highly practical synthesis of the "Daniell method" and the measure theoretic approach. It is the ideal text for undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in real analysis. This edition offers a new chapter on Hilbert Spaces and integrates over 150 new exercises. New and varied examples are included for each chapter. Students will be challenged by the more than 600 exercises. Topics are treated rigorously, illustrated by examples, and offer a clear connection between real and functional analysis. This text can be used in combination with the authors' Problems in Real Analysis, 2nd Edition, also published by Academic Press, which offers complete solutions to all exercises in the Principles text. Key Features: * Gives a unique presentation of integration theory * Over 150 new exercises integrated throughout the text * Presents a new chapter on Hilbert Spaces * Provides a rigorous introduction to measure theory * Illustrated with new and varied examples in each chapter * Introduces topological ideas in a friendly manner * Offers a clear connection between real analysis and functional analysis * Includes brief biographies of mathematicians "All in all, this is a beautiful selection and a masterfully balanced presentation of the fundamentals of contemporary measure and integration theory which can be grasped easily by the student." --J. Lorenz in Zentralblatt für Mathematik "...a clear and precise treatment of the subject. There are many exercises of varying degrees of difficulty. I highly recommend this book for classroom use." --CASPAR GOFFMAN, Department of Mathematics, Purdue University

Book excerpt: The third edition of this well known text continues to provide a solid foundation in mathematical analysis for undergraduate and first-year graduate students. The text begins with a discussion of the real number system as a complete ordered field. (Dedekind's construction is now treated in an appendix to Chapter I.) The topological background needed for the development of convergence, continuity, differentiation and integration is provided in Chapter 2. There is a new section on the gamma function, and many new and interesting exercises are included. This text is part of the Walter Rudin Student Series in Advanced Mathematics.

Book excerpt: An in-depth look at real analysis and its applications-now expanded and revised. This new edition of the widely used analysis book continues to cover real analysis in greater detail and at a more advanced level than most books on the subject. Encompassing several subjects that underlie much of modern analysis, the book focuses on measure and integration theory, point set topology, and the basics of functional analysis. It illustrates the use of the general theories and introduces readers to other branches of analysis such as Fourier analysis, distribution theory, and probability theory. This edition is bolstered in content as well as in scope-extending its usefulness to students outside of pure analysis as well as those interested in dynamical systems. The numerous exercises, extensive bibliography, and review chapter on sets and metric spaces make Real Analysis: Modern Techniques and Their Applications, Second Edition invaluable for students in graduate-level analysis courses. New features include: * Revised material on the n-dimensional Lebesgue integral. * An improved proof of Tychonoff's theorem. * Expanded material on Fourier analysis. * A newly written chapter devoted to distributions and differential equations. * Updated material on Hausdorff dimension and fractal dimension.

Book excerpt: Based on courses given at Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) over the past 30 years, this introductory textbook develops the central concepts of the analysis of functions of one variable — systematically, with many examples and illustrations, and in a manner that builds upon, and sharpens, the student’s mathematical intuition. The book provides a solid grounding in the basics of logic and proofs, sets, and real numbers, in preparation for a study of the main topics: limits, continuity, rational functions and transcendental functions, differentiation, and integration. Numerous applications to other areas of mathematics, and to physics, are given, thereby demonstrating the practical scope and power of the theoretical concepts treated. In the spirit of learning-by-doing, Real Analysis includes more than 500 engaging exercises for the student keen on mastering the basics of analysis. The wealth of material, and modular organization, of the book make it adaptable as a textbook for courses of various levels; the hints and solutions provided for the more challenging exercises make it ideal for independent study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential "lifesaver" that every student of real analysis needs Real analysis is difficult. For most students, in addition to learning new material about real numbers, topology, and sequences, they are also learning to read and write rigorous proofs for the first time. The Real Analysis Lifesaver is an innovative guide that helps students through their first real analysis course while giving them the solid foundation they need for further study in proof-based math. Rather than presenting polished proofs with no explanation of how they were devised, The Real Analysis Lifesaver takes a two-step approach, first showing students how to work backwards to solve the crux of the problem, then showing them how to write it up formally. It takes the time to provide plenty of examples as well as guided "fill in the blanks" exercises to solidify understanding. Newcomers to real analysis can feel like they are drowning in new symbols, concepts, and an entirely new way of thinking about math. Inspired by the popular Calculus Lifesaver, this book is refreshingly straightforward and full of clear explanations, pictures, and humor. It is the lifesaver that every drowning student needs. The essential “lifesaver” companion for any course in real analysis Clear, humorous, and easy-to-read style Teaches students not just what the proofs are, but how to do them—in more than 40 worked-out examples Every new definition is accompanied by examples and important clarifications Features more than 20 “fill in the blanks” exercises to help internalize proof techniques Tried and tested in the classroom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was plane geometry your favourite math course in high school? Did you like proving theorems? Are you sick of memorising integrals? If so, real analysis could be your cup of tea. In contrast to calculus and elementary algebra, it involves neither formula manipulation nor applications to other fields of science. None. It is Pure Mathematics, and it is sure to appeal to the budding pure mathematician. In this new introduction to undergraduate real analysis the author takes a different approach from past studies of the subject, by stressing the importance of pictures in mathematics and hard problems. The exposition is informal and relaxed, with many helpful asides, examples and occasional comments from mathematicians like Dieudonne, Littlewood and Osserman. The author has taught the subject many times over the last 35 years at Berkeley and this book is based on the honours version of this course. The book contains an excellent selection of more than 500 exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing worth knowing can be taught. Oscar Wilde, “The Critic as Artist,” 1890. Analysis is a profound subject; it is neither easy to understand nor summarize. However, Real Analysis can be discovered by solving problems. This book aims to give independent students the opportunity to discover Real Analysis by themselves through problem solving. ThedepthandcomplexityofthetheoryofAnalysiscanbeappreciatedbytakingaglimpseatits developmental history. Although Analysis was conceived in the 17th century during the Scienti?c Revolution, it has taken nearly two hundred years to establish its theoretical basis. Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Fermat, Newton and Leibniz were among those who contributed to its genesis. Deep conceptual changes in Analysis were brought about in the 19th century by Cauchy and Weierstrass. Furthermore, modern concepts such as open and closed sets were introduced in the 1900s. Today nearly every undergraduate mathematics program requires at least one semester of Real Analysis. Often, students consider this course to be the most challenging or even intimidating of all their mathematics major requirements. The primary goal of this book is to alleviate those concerns by systematically solving the problems related to the core concepts of most analysis courses. In doing so, we hope that learning analysis becomes less taxing and thereby more satisfying.
