Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. The end at which it aims is to demonstrate the existence of God, to establish the principal divine attributes, to vindicate God's relation to the world as that of the Creator to the creature, and, finally, to throw what light it can on the action of divine providence in regard to man and on the problem of evil.

But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Natural Theology: Based Upon the Doctrine of Evolution Dear Dr. Sanday, My attention to the subject of Natural Theology has been chiefly due to the encouragement I received from you, when many years ago, after a sermon preached in the Chapel of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, you expressed a desire to hear more from me on the subject of Darwinism in relation to Theology. And the unfailing sympathy and kindness you have shown towards me throughout the years in which, amid many distractions, this work has slowly grown and reached completion - in how imperfect a form I am only too conscious - moves me to ask you to permit your name to be associated with it, and to accept it from me as an expression of my gratitude. I have also to thank you, and Dr. Robertson, your successor at Durham, for the cheerful readiness with which, under the pressure of other engagements, you undertook to read the proof sheets; and for the many valuable suggestions which you and Dr. Robertson have made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology In the celebrated Catholic controversy about the manner of Divine foreknowledge of and concurrence in human actions, it has been my endeavour to give a good account of the opposite opinions and of my own position. I have purposely avoided quotations, as often as I could conveniently without doing harm to the cause of truth, in order to eliminate any element of prejudice or party strife. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology: Or Rational Theism This volume presents the substance of lectures on the subject, given to students in the author's recent relation as President of Pennsylvania College. He was led to this method of instruction by the absence of any suitable text-book covering the various forms of the theistic evidences. Though the matter is here somewhat rearranged and reshaped, the general discussion has been determined by the needs of the College class room and the purpose of furnishing a reasoned and correct view of the truth on this incomparably important subject. The aim of the book, therefore, is, not to offer any new or original view of the theistic question, but to bring together the various approved evidences and furnish a compendious statement of them as they now stand in the best accredited thought and knowledge of our times. It is didactic, rather than polemical. The difficulty of the undertaking has been fully appreciated. No subject could be named, the discussion of which would lead through such a mass of conflicting metaphysics or traverse more varied and antagonistic speculation.
