The author in his work in teaching metallurgy has frequently felt the lack of a suitable reference and text-book on the important subject of introductory metallurgy, and knows that this want is shared by others. The subject is treated from the modern view-points, and metallurgists in general will probably find something of interest in the volume, particularly in the chapters on alloys, measurement of high temperatures, slags, and mattes.
