Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Metal Mining The art of mining must, to a large extent, be learnt at the mine, either underground or at the surface. The diligent student, however, will obtain much aid from external sources, and it is the object of this little work to convey some elementary knowledge of the principles and facts of mining in a form suitable for the instruction of young miners starting in life - to teach them what to observe - and how to interpret their observations. The young student should endeavour to add to his own limited experience the larger experiences of many men in many countries - by reading as well as by conversation with his travelled comrades. He should also accustom himself to make written notes of the peculiarities of all mineral deposits with which he may become acquainted, and of the cost and comparative efficiency of all tools, machinery, and materials which may come under his notice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Mining: Valuation, Organization and Administration; Copper, Gold, Lead, Silver, Tin and Zinc This volume is a condensation of a series of lectures delivered in part at Stamford and in part at Columbia Universities. It is intended neither for those wholly ignorant of mining, nor for those long experienced in the profession. The bulk of the material presented is the common heritage of the profession, and if any one may think there is insufficient reference to previous writers, let him endeavor to find to whom the origin of our methods should be credited. The science has grown by small contributions of experience since, or before, those unnamed Egyptian engineers, whose works prove their knowl edge of many fundamentals of mine engineering six thousand eight hundred years ago. If I have contributed one sentence to the accumulated knowledge of a thousand generations of engineers, or have thrown one new ray of light on the work, I shall have done my share. I therefore must acknowledge my obligations to all those who have gone before, to all that has been written that I have read, to those engineers with whom I have been associated for many years, and in particular to many friends for kindly reply to inquiry upon points herein discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Metallurgy Distillation and Sublimation - When a metal or any volatile body is expelled by heat in the form of vapour, and condensed to a liquid in some cool receptacle, it is said to be distilled. Mercury and zinc are extracted from their ores by a distilla tion process. When the metal is condensed to a solid, as is the case with arsenic, it is then said to be sublimed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Metallurgy: An Introduction to the Metallurgy of the Metals There is published in the United States no work which covers the subject of introductory or general metallurgy. The classic on this subject, "An Introduction to the Study of Metallurgy," by the distinguished late Sir William Roberts-Austen, has not been revised for a number of years. The author in his work in teaching metallurgy has frequently felt the lack of a suitable reference and text-book on the important subject of introductory metallurgy, and knows that this want is shared by others. This volume endeavors to supply this want. The subject is treated from the modern view-points, and metallurgists in general will probably find something of interest in the volume, particularly in the chapters on alloys, measurement of high temperatures, slags, and mattes. The sources of information are fully covered by references in foot-notes, by means of which the author acknowledges his indebtedness to the many workers in the scientific fields which have a bearing on the subject in hand. For material for the chapter on "Metals from the Historic Point of View" is derived in part from the works of Roesing and Neumann, to whom the author expresses his indebtedness. For material in the chapter on "Slag" the author has drawn largely on the invaluable work of J. H. L. Vogt, which has been so far unrecognized in this country. The following firms and individuals have kindly assisted by the loan of photographs and drawings: Mr. Edward S. Shephard of Denver; The Allis Chalmers Company of Milwaukee; The United-Otto By-product Coke Oven Company of New York; The Colorado Iron Works Company of Denver; The Crosby Manufacturing Company of Boston; and the Wellman, Seaver, Morgan Company of Cleveland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Metallurgy: A Practical Treatise on the Art of Extracting Metals From Their Ores A great difficulty experienced in collecting statistics relative to the metal-production of the world arises from the fact that ores raised in one country are frequently subjected to metallurgical treatment in another, and the produce is, in the majority of instances, returned by both. Allowance for such double returns has, when practicable, been made, but the complete elimination of error arising from this cause would be exceedingly difficult. Sometimes no precise figures have been available, and in such cases estimates founded on the best procurable data have been substituted. Both the wet and dry methods of assaying are given with considerable detail, and when, as in the case of ironstones, the value of an ore is materially affected by the nature and quantity of the impurities present, the processes employed for their detection and estimation are fully described.
