Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Sculpture is probably the most well known aspect of Greek art, for a contemporary it expresses the most beautiful ideal and plastic perfection. It is the first of the Ancient Arts that looked to free itself from the imitative constraints, of the faithful representation of nature. Only a small part of the production of Greek Sculpture is known to us. Many of the masterpieces described by Antique literature are henceforth lost or badly damaged, and a large part, we know are copies, more or less skillful and faithful to the Roman era. Many have been restored by Western Sculptors, from the Renaissance to nowadays, and often in a meaning very different from the original work: a discobolous is thus turned into a dying gladiator, this god received the attributes of another, the legs of this statue are transplanted to the torso of this other one. “The soul of Greek Sculpture contains in it all sculpture. Its essential simplicity, defies all definition. We can feel it, but we can not express it. ‘Open your eyes, study the statues, look, reflect and look again,’ is the perpetual perception of anyone who wants to learn or know about Greek Sculpture.”

Download or read book Greek Art written by Mark D. Fullerton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since antiquity, the period from 480 to 323 BC in Greece has been considered to be the high point, the Classical era, of Hellenic culture. At that time, the values and customs of ancient Greece received an especially lucid expression in the visual arts. In this new overview, the political, social, and religious functions of Greek art are given fresh life, with chapters focusing on issues such as the relationship between visual narrative and history; the role of artistic style in the construction of meaning; and how personal and communal identity was carried by the imagery on intricately decorated pottery and jewelry, naturalistic wall-paintings, and public buildings across the Greek world. Using the Parthenon as a paradigm monument, Mark Fullerton examines the principles of classical sculpture, architecture, and painting to explore all phases of Greek art from its birth around 900 BC to its incorporation into the art of the Roman Empire. Combining the latest archaeological discoveries with new scholarly methods, Fullerton presents a history of Greek art and the idea of the classical through a range of media and materials, including Archaic statues from the Aegean islands, the gold and ivory of Macedonia, to the great Hellenistic monuments of the Greek east. Mark D. Fullerton is Professor and Chairperson in the Department of History of Art at the Ohio State University. His research centers on Roman, Greek, and Hellenistic sculpture and he has published work on Roman art.
Book Synopsis A Grammar of Greek Art (Classic Reprint) by : Percy Gardner
Download or read book A Grammar of Greek Art (Classic Reprint) written by Percy Gardner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of Greek Art Just as the poetry and prose of the Greeks is expressed in a particular language, the words and the grammar of which must be studied by those who would understand the literature, so works of Greek painting and sculpture also are composed in what may be called a particular artistic language.l The words of that language are the strokes of the brush and the chisel; but these are put together in order to embody Greek ideas in ways which are distinctive and not like those adopted by any other people; certainly unlike those of modern art. The object of the present work is to set forth, as simply and directly as possible, what these ways are; to define, in fact, the principles of Greek art, and so render more intelligible the works of paint ing and sculpture which have come down to us from Hellenic antiquity.
