Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Elementary Education and Their Application This book seeks, first, to set forth the principles of elementary education, and second, to apply these to the work of the elementary school. To establish the principles of elementary education, and to bring to view what is implied in them, a study is made in Part I of the relation between the individual and society, also of the nature of the mental life of the child, of how the child develops, and of how he learns. Part II seeks to determine, in the light of the principles developed, the aim of elementary education, the curriculum of the elementary school, the methods of elementary instruction, and the organization of the elementary school. The effort made to establish the principles of elementary education, the conception held of the inter-relation between the individual and society, the theory of human nature and of human development set forth, the social or national aim of education advanced, the analysis of the learning processes, and the methods of instruction presented are among the distinctive features of this book. The materials offered are sufficient for a three-hour course during two terms or a five-hour course for one term. The book may be used in two ways. First and preferably, it may be followed chapter by chapter. Second, where students purpose to give only a short period to preparation and desire to concentrate more particularly upon class teaching, a course in the Principles and Methods of Elementary Instruction may be given by taking Sec. 4 of Chapter IV, and Chapters V, VIII, and IX. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for the Needs of Life: A d104book in the Principles of Education, for Use in Elementary Classes in Normal Schools and Colleges and in Institutes and Reading Circles The preparation of this book is the direct outgrowth of the generous appreciation given to the writer's "Psychology of Thinking." The dominant point of view of that book is here applied more widely to the interpretation of education. Although treating of principles and fundamental ideas rather than of details, nevertheless the attempt has been made to express the thought simply enough to make the book useful as a text in elementary courses in Normal Schools and Colleges and as the basis of discussion for groups of students who are working together in reading circles and teachers institutes. Education is conceived as an integral phase of the life process. Everything that lives has needs to be met. In so far as any living being actually modifies its own behavior in the light of experience, learning occurs. Conscious, or intentional, education gives guidance and direction to the natural learning processes. It does not substitute something else for the principles, laws, and methods of nature; it works in harmony with them and facilitates nature in the attainment of her goal in the lives of individuals. The outcome is that the needs of life are met better, more fully, and at higher levels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching: A Manual for Normal Schools, Reading Circles, and the Teachers of Elementary, Intermediate, and Higher Schools The individual teacher must have part in the construction of the science in which his art is to have its foundations. Otherwise the new education will simply substitute one tyrant for another. In other words, obedience to principles of philosophy, though it be the best philosophy, is only slavery as long as the teacher who submits to such laws cannot justify these in his own consciousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Broader Elementary Education In the conviction, also, that there can be no fundamental study of education that does not seek to ascertain the end education should strive to reach, and the impulses and capacities it must appeal to, and that there can be no rational teaching that is not based on definite notions as to these matters, he has endeavored to present those notions as clearly as may be; and he has sought to base all his recommendations as to practice upon his conclusions. A prominent feature of the book is the emphasis laid upon the doctrine that there is a place for the will in education. The current theory inherited from Herbart, and by him from Rousseau, that everything should be made to depend upon interest, that there should be no must in education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pestalozzi the Influence of His Principles and Practice on Elementary Education In recognizing (bservation (Anschaunng) as the absolute basis of knowledge, I have established the first and most important principle of instruction... I have turned quite round the European car of education, and set it in new direction. - Pestalozzi. La methode de Pestalozzi est reelle, applicable, et peut avoir une grand influence sur la marche future de l'esprit humain. Pestalozzi met l'enfant en etat de decouvrir lui-meme ce qu'on vent lui en seigner. - Mme. De Stael, De l'Allemagne. The principle adopted and adhered to by Pestalozzi is in its nature universal, and may be universally applied. In few Words, it is simply attending to the laws of Nature. By these it has been ordained, that the human under-a standing, though it may be gradually opened, and enabled to embrace a vas extent of knowledge, can only be opened gradually, and by a regular series of efforts.... According to this method, the mind of the pupil cannot be passive in receiving instruction. It is compelled to work its Way to knowledge, and having its activity properly directed, is led step by step to the perception of truth. - Mrs. Elizabeth Hamilton, Hints addressed to the Patrons and Directors of Schools, 1815.
