Book Synopsis Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media by : M. Kaviany
Download or read book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media written by M. Kaviany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the empirical treatment of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media is over a century old, only in the last three decades has the transport in these heterogeneous systems been addressed in detail. So far, single-phase flows in porous media have been treated or at least formulated satisfactorily, while the subject of two-phase flow and the related heat-transfer in porous media is still in its infancy. This book identifies the principles of transport in porous media and compares the avalaible predictions based on theoretical treatments of various transport mechanisms with the existing experimental results. The theoretical treatment is based on the volume-averaging of the momentum and energy equations with the closure conditions necessary for obtaining solutions. While emphasizing a basic understanding of heat transfer in porous media, this book does not ignore the need for predictive tools; whenever a rigorous theoretical treatment of a phenomena is not avaliable, semi-empirical and empirical treatments are given.

Book Synopsis Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media by : Massoud Kaviany
Download or read book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media written by Massoud Kaviany and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-04 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convective heat tranfer is the result of fluid flowing between objects of different temperatures. Thus it may be the objective of a process (as in refrigeration) or it may be an incidental aspect of other processes. This monograph reviews in a concise and unified manner recent contributions to the principles of convective heat transfer for single- and multi-phase systems: It summarizes the role of the fundamental mechanism, discusses the governing differential equations, describes approximation schemes and phenomenological models, and examines their solutions and applications. After a review of the basic physics and thermodynamics, the book divides the subject into three parts. Part 1 deals with single-medium transfer, specifically with intraphase transfers in single-phase flows and with intramedium transfers in two-phase flows. Part 2 deals with fluid-solid transfer processes, both in cases where the interface is small and in cases where it is large, as well as liquid-liquid transfer processes. Part 3 considers three media, addressing both liquid-solid-solid and gas-liquid-solid systems.

A medium-sized text providing a thorough treatment of heat transfer fundamentals Includes both analytical and numerical solutions of heat transfer problems Extensive use of Excel and Matlab Includes a chapter on mass transfer Includes a unique chapter of multimode problems to enhance the students problem-solving skills. Minimal information is given in the problem statements. Students must determine the relevant modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and, using the earlier chapters, must determine the appropriate solution technique. For example, they must decide whether the problem is steady-state or transient. They must determine the applicable convection coefficients and material properties. They must decide which solution approach (e. g., analytical or numerical) is appropriate

This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the transport of thermal energy in flows of practical significance. The temperature distributions which result from convective heat transfer, in contrast to those associated with radiation heat transfer and conduction in solids, are related to velocity characteristics and we have included sufficient information of momentum transfer to make the book self-contained. This is readily achieved because of the close relation ship between the equations which represent conservation of momentum and energy: it is very desirable since convective heat transfer involves flows with large temperature differences, where the equations are coupled through an equation of state, as well as flows with small temperature differences where the energy equation is dependent on the momentum equation but the momentum equation is assumed independent of the energy equation. The equations which represent the conservation of scalar properties, including thermal energy, species concentration and particle number density can be identical in form and solutions obtained in terms of one dependent variable can represent those of another. Thus, although the discussion and arguments of this book are expressed in terms of heat transfer, they are relevant to problems of mass and particle transport. Care is required, however, in making use of these analogies since, for example, identical boundary conditions are not usually achieved in practice and mass transfer can involve more than one dependent variable.
