Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Australian Agriculture In 1892, the then Minister for Education and Agriculture in South Australia convened a conference of members of Parliament, the editors of the leading papers, agriculturists and educationists, to discuss the best means for promoting agricultural education. The writer was chairman of the committee appointed to draw up a scheme. Among the recommendations adopted by the conference was one affirming the necessity for a text book on Australian agriculture. The duty of preparing such a book was many times urged upon the writer, and he in turn endeavoured to induce others to undertake it; but after nearly twenty years the work remained undone. The author has now attempted to meet the want. The task has proved even greater than was anticipated, for new ground had to be broken with no examples to follow or avoid. In addition, the requirements of at least three classes of readers had to be considered within the limits of one small book. If the writer has not wholly succeeded, his effort may at least stimulate others, and make the way easier for them. Book Synopsis Principles of Field Crop Production by : J. E. Pratley
Download or read book Principles of Field Crop Production written by J. E. Pratley and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Field Crop Production is a guide to commercial crop production as it is practised in Australia. In addition to chapters on cultural practices, irrigation, climate and crop distribution, crop improvement and soils, the book also examines non-agronomic aspects, such as society, politics, and farm management, which are often overlooked in a textbook of this nature. A novel treatment of crop production is also provided, which integrates weed, insect and disease control. All chapters are written by experts in their fields. The second edition incorporates important developments which have taken place in Australian agriculture in the 1980s. Some new crops have established significant industries. Crop species have been re-evaluated to reflect their current importance. Technological advances in the areas of irrigation, crop establishment and crop protection are incorporated, as are changes in industry organisation. Concerns for the environment, particularly soil degradation, are reflected in the treatment of tillage practices and weed control strategies. Further information is provided in the many diagrams, maps and tables and the updated reference list at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis Australian Agriculture by : Ted Henzell
Download or read book Australian Agriculture written by Ted Henzell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-05-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture in Australia has had a lively history. The first European settlers in 1788 brought agricultural technologies with them from their homelands, influencing early practices in Australia. Wool production dominated the 19th century, while dairying grew rapidly during the first half of the 20th century. Despite having one of the driest landscapes in the world, Australia has been successful in adapting agricultural practices to the land, and these innovations in farming are explained in this well-researched volume. Focusing on the technologies that the farmers and graziers actually used, this book follows the history of each of the major commodities or groups of commodities to the end of the 20th century: grain crops, sheep and wool, beef and dairy, working bullocks and horses, sugar, cotton, fruit and vegetables, and grapes and wine. Major issues facing the various agricultural enterprises as they enter the 21st century are also discussed. Written in a readable style to suit students of history, social sciences and agriculture, Australian Agriculture will also appeal to professionals in the industry and those with a general interest in Australian sociology and history.

Book Synopsis Australia's Role in Feeding the World by : Sarah Blagrove
Download or read book Australia's Role in Feeding the World written by Sarah Blagrove and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth's human population currently exceeds 7 billion, and by the year 2050 our planet will have at least two billion more mouths to feed. When faced with providing food for so many people, the idea is often advanced that Australia will become the 'food bowl' of Asia. Australia currently grows enough food to feed about three times its population and agricultural exports are important to our economy; however, Australia's role in feeding the world needs careful consideration. This highly topical book draws together the latest intelligence on the sustainable production and distribution of food and other products from Australian farms. It examines questions that policy-makers, farmers, politicians, agricultural scientists and the general public are asking about the potential productivity of our arable land, the environmental and economic impacts of seeking to increase productivity, and the value of becoming cleaner and greener in our agricultural output. With chapters on the emergence of new markets, consumer trends in China, the biophysical constraints on agricultural expansion, and the various products of Australian agriculture and aquaculture, Australia's Role in Feeding the World provides valuable insight into the future of agriculture in this nation.
