Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of the Administrative Law of the United States It is the hope of the author that the' book now presented to students of politics will soon be followed by one consisting of cases illustrative of American administrative law, to be arranged in the same order as the one here adopted. Such a case book he feels would be of the greatest service in illustrating the conditions which are encountered by administrative officers, and thus bringing in concrete shape before the student's eyes the problems which he is studying. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Government in the United States State Government in the United States is a subject on which many books might be written. This book is designed to furnish a critical analysis of the principles of state government in the United States. Beginning with a statement of the principles upon which the governments of the original states were established, it explains how the original forms of government have developed in response to changing conditions, how the present state governments are meeting present needs, and concludes with a brief consideration of some of the contemporary plans for further reform. Why should we change our form of government? Has the time come for discarding the eighteenth century doctrine of the division of powers? These are some of the more fundamental questions to which the book attempts to give an answer. But the book is not solely concerned with the political philosophy of American state government. It also treats of the more practical problems arising out of the growth of the functions of the modern state and the increase of its administrative activities. For the convenience of those readers who may wish to pursue further the study of contemporary state government, I have prepared a bibliographical appendix, containing a selected list of the most useful titles. References cited in the text or in the footnotes are, for the most part, omitted from this list. It has not seemed necessary to include either in the text or elsewhere much statistical matter relating to the forms of government, such as tables of the numbers and tenure of members of state legislatures, or to the conduct of administration, such as tables of enlistments in the state militia or of salient features in industrial or labor legislation. Such information is readily obtainable in various well-known publications, notably in the American Year Book, published annually since 1910. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of American Government It is somewhat presumptuous to attempt to reduce American Government to its essential principles. The subject is difficult - more or less technical and quite beyond the compass of any one book. Therefore, in writing the present volume, the author cites many books in which the matter under immediate consideration is discussed at length. The rule of rules for the student of American government is Multum, not Multa. There is peril, if only the principle be considered, that what knowledge is gained will be an acquaintance with abstractions; if the example, or illustration alone is considered, the peril is of a memory of facts more or less temporary, or isolated. Government is essentially organic in nature and must be studied as an organism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government Class Book: A Manual of Instruction in the Principles of Constitutional Government and Law; Part I, Principles of Government; Part II, the Government of Illinois The study of the principles of political science is a necessary part of a liberal education. In a country where the people govern themselves the science of gov ermnent is a necessary part of a common-school educa tion. In the United States the people elect their own law-makers and rulers, establish their own constitu: tions, and determine even the fundamental principles upon which men Shall be governed. The danger of entrusting such power to the ignorant has not failed of illustration in our States and cities. Having universal suffrage, the people must learn to govern themselves for the sake of their own preservation and welfare. Nor is a knowledge of the principles of legal science less necessary to every citizen. The laws of man know as little of mercy as the laws of nature, in that law never admits ignorance as an excuse for wrong. It is a proof of the essential justice of our system of juris prudence, 'that so many citizens pass safely through life, totally ignorant of the law, and relying merely upon their own sense of what should be. And yet every day gives proof that ignorance is always dan gercus. The study of such a work as this will not make a youth a lawyer, but it will fix in his mind a system of broad principles, which cannot fail to be useful practically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State and County School Administration, Vol. 2: Source Book IN a companion volume of Principles, to be issued shortly, the authors of this volume of Sources have elaborated the principles underlying state educational control which have grown out of American experience with the public school systems of the states. These principles, promising, as they do, to become a guide for the solution of the difficult political problem of adapting the form and operation of educational institutions to the changes constantly demanded by the progressive evolution of our civilization, are, we feel, entitled to the serious study of both educationalists and publicists. The present volume of Sources seeks to make readily accessible to students of educational administration some of the more im portant material illustrative of the principles of proper state and county school administration. No attempt has been made to include material that would comprehend all of the varied fea tures of educational administration, but rather to parallel the book of Principles with a few of the more pertinent documents, arranged under the same divisions and chapter headings into which the book of Principles will be divided. It is believed that the present volume contains typical records re ecting the ideas and practices that have molded and still continue to in uence the form of our educational organization, the manner of our educational administration, and, without question, the ultimate results of the school systems of the United States. The underlying purpose of the two volumes on State and County School Administration will be to distinguish, in what appears to be a conglomerate mass of hit-and-miss experiments, those fundamental principles of educational organization and administration which American democracy has developed for the operation and control of its systems of public education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Civil Government Exemplified in the Government of the State of New York When a pupil thoroughly grasps a principle, he will look for, and if need be, will find, the facts to fit it; or if these be pre sented to him, he will seize upon them as the natural or necessary complement of the principle which has already found lodgment in his mind. The two must go together; but herein precedence is given to principles which the facts exemplify. This treatment of the subject calls for less remembering, but for more thinking. If the thinking be well done, the remembering will take care of itself. Memory never fails with those who think. But thinking is naught with those who can do nothing but remember. The one thing needful in our schools is that the pupils be got out of the rut of merely remembering, and be induced to try their powers in the broad field of thought. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1814, this is a reprint of the Yale University Press 1950 edition with an introduction by Roy Franklin Nichols. 562 pp. Taylor wrote this important work in 1814 as a reply to John Adams's Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America. Unlike Adams, he rejects the concept of "a natural aristocracy" of "paper and patronage" and a federal government based on a system of debt and taxes. He considers the American government to be one of divided powers responsible to the sovereign people alone. Opposed to the extent of power awarded to the executive office, he calls for shorter terms for the president and all elected officers. Charles Beard said this work "deserves to rank among the two or three really historic contributions to political science which have been produced in the United States." JOHN TAYLOR [1753-1824] was known as "John Taylor of Caroline County, Virginia." He served in the Continental Army and later in the Virginia House of Delegates, then served three terms as a member of the United States Senate. He is considered to be one of the nation's greatest philosophers of agrarian liberalism. He was one of the nation's first proponents of states' rights. His works include New Views of the Constitution of the United States (1823), Construction Construed, and Constitutions Vindicated (1820) and A Defence of the Measures of the Administration of Thomas Jefferson. By Curtius (1804), an argument in favor of the achievements of the first Jefferson administration.
