Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Arithmetic Teaching It is not so much whether a teacher is a good teacher as whether she is a progressive teacher. The good teacher may deteriorate, the progressive teacher never. Proper method is as essential to the teacher as to the singer or the painter. Without some knowledge of the technique of the profession, little progress can be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching Arithmetic This book, as its title indicates, is a discussion of principles and methods of teaching arithmetic. A complete study of methods of teaching any subject involves two things (a) A study of guiding principles, and (b) A study of the details of method - of possible methods of presenting the various parts of the subject. The best place to study the details of method is in connection with a review of subject matter, but such a study should be preceded or accompanied by a study of general principles. It is the purpose of this book to do three things (a) To give a clear conception of the ends to be accomplished through the work in arithmetic (b) To analyze the teaching of arithmetic into the different kinds or types of teaching that occur in the subject and to give an understanding of guiding principles and a knowledge of possible methods of procedure, tools and devices to be used in each of these types; and (c) To make clear, by means of numerous illustrations and lesson plans, how these general principles and methods of procedure apply to the teaching of the particular subject of arithmetic. The material of this book has all been developed and used in the author's classes during the last six years, and is presented here in book form in. the hope that it may contribute something toward improving and standardizing the teaching of arithmetic. It is believed that this book will be found suitable for use as a text for normal schools and teachers' reading circles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Method in Teaching Arithmetic, as Derived From Scientific Investigation The tables of the other operations have not been studied as completely as have the addition tables, but the same kind of situa tion is indicated. The several combinations appear not to be equally difficult, although the order of difficulty probably is not the same for all operations. Also a study of our best number primers would doubtless show a corresponding failure of the frequency of occurrence of the combinations to agree with the need for practice upon them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Methods in Arithmetic The present volume deals with somewhat the Same material, but from the point of View of the working teacher or student in a normal school seeking direct help in understanding the newer methods and using them under ordinary conditions Of classroom instruction. NO knowledge Of psychology is assumed as a requirement for profitable study Of this book. Discus sions Of the general psychological basis of the new methods and Of the evidence in their favor are here omitted or much Simplified. The treatment is constructive throughout. The practical consequences are treated more specifically and with abundant detailed illustration and application. In order to aid the teacher still further in putting the new principles Of teaching into active Operation, each chapter is accompanied by exercises, which are even more detailed and concrete in nature than the text. The choice Of textbook material for illustrations of current practice in the text and for various uses in the exercises requires a word Of explanation. As a matter Of scientific care and of convenience to the student almost all of this material is taken from the same textbook. Scientifically this is almost necessary; for a procedure that is correct in one total teaching plan might be weak or even wrong in a different total teaching plan. Each detail of method ought to be judged with reference to its setting. All the details presented here are parts Of one same teaching plan or textbook - all belong in the same setting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Method Arithmetic The New method arithmetic is what its name implies a new method of presenting the subject of practical arithmetic. The authors have not been, inspired by any desire to add one more to the already large number of practical arithmetics that are on the market, but, rather, to turn out a book that will present the subject in a way that must commend itself to every teacher and student. We think it will be conceded that in any branch of education the main idea should be to impress principles, and to so arrange details that the principles are not lost sight of in a confusing mass of detail. Who has not met the boy in school who felt that he was strong on profit and loss, but to whom commission and brokerage was always a difficulty. Is this a fault in the boy or in the system under which he has been instructed We think that the system must shoulder the blame. There is no difference, in a proper arrangement of the study of arithmetic, between profit and loss and commission and brokerage. When we set up these two applica tions of percentage as separate departments of the work, we are simply transgressing a first principle in properly presenting the subject. The detail of profit and loss and commission and broker age is made to overshadow the principle of percentage, of which such work is a mere application. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Arithmetic: A Handbook for Teachers and a Textbook for Normal and Training Schools There is a science of teaching arithmetic. The feeling of needs and the finding of means for their satisfaction is the law of advancement; logical division is the law of classifications and definitions; induction, deduction, and the complete method are the laws for the discovery of principles; experimentation and reasoning are the laws for the solution of simple problems; and the analysis of complex problems into simple problems is the law for the solution of problems in general. In Part I the author has endeavored to develop and state these laws. In Part II he has endeavored to illus trate their application; much has been omitted but enough has been given to suggest the rest. In Part III he has endeavored to give an idea of the advance in complexity from grade to grade in elementary schools and of what is required to secure primary and higher licenses for teaching arithmetic. As a handbook, this work should help the superintend ent to secure uniformity in his schools the principal to harmonize the work of the grades and the teacher to get a clear view of fundamental laws. As a textbook, this work should help the teacher in normal and training schools to supplement his lectures; and prospective teachers in school and out of school to prepare for their chosen profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to Leonard's Arithmetic: For Teachers Only The scholar should not be required to proceed in each sum in the same manner that is pursued here; it is sufficient if he ob tains the true answer by' a correct method, though it be more difficult than the one in the Key. Should his course be quite long and tedious, it may then, indeed, be well to require him to seek a more ready method, and perhaps lead him to one by ap propriete questions. But in no case should he be told fully and precisely in what manner he should perform an example. Ques tions that will induce him to think, and lead him, by his own rea soning to short and simple solutions, are proper, but positive di rections should rarely be given. Speaking of the impolicy of telling a scholar every step to be taken, reminds me of the propriety of saying a few words con cerning the great number of rules and precepts to be found in many arithmetics. In these books every subject contains at least one rule, although the examples may involve the same principles as those under a general rule, by which they may be solved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method in Arithmetic IT is our purpose in this volume to make plain to teachers in elementary schools the purpose of teach ing arithmetic, to outline fully a course of study based upon this controlling idea, and to discuss and illustrate the method of handling some of the chief topics. It is strictly a teacher's book, and not designed for use by children. It has been generally felt that arithmetic stands aloof from other studies, but the attempt is made here to show a very intimate and important relation to the other studies, one vital in fact to the proper plan and treatment of the whole subject. This volume is one in a series of special methods, as follows: Reading of English Classics, Primary Reading and Story Work, Geography, History, Ele mentary Science, Language, and Manual Arts. The course of study for the eight grades based on the plans worked out in these eight volumes is now in press and will appear in two volumes. The Disciplinary Values. 2. The Pleasure Values. 3. The Cultural Value. 4. The Preparatory Value. An analysis of each of these values now presents itself for study. The Practical Values of Arithmetic. - The utilitarian value of arithmetic has long served to explain its traditional place in the elementary school curriculum. The mere routine activities of daily life demand a mastery of certain number facts and number processes. In addition, a care fully selected curriculum in arithmetic helps to give children an insight into social activities that would otherwise be unknown to them. It is necessary that children understand the meaning of averages and the modes of computing them; that they know the meaning of common mathematical symbols, of percentages of increases and decreases, of rates of taxation, of interest, of insurance - in a word, the common business practices of social life.
