La profundidad intelectual de Ricardo y la forma notablemente moderna en la que abordaba los problemas económicos, con un elevado y riguroso nivel de abstracción, aun teniendo en cuenta que carecía de una educación universitaria formal, hizo que la influencia de los Principios de Ricardo fuera perdurable, siendo admirado por economistas tan destacados como John Stuart Mill y Karl Marx en el siglo XIX, y después Alfred Marshall, Piero Sraffa y muchos otros hasta nuestros días.
