International Colloquium and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contibutions in this volume constitute a selection of the papers presented at the 11th International Colloquium of the West-European (German-based) society for the history of linguistic ideas, the Studienkreis "Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft". The central theme of the conference was the history of linguistic and grammatical praxis. While this topic served, for the first time, as the central theme of a conference in the history of linguistics, the various types of linguistic praxis - language teaching and language learning, description and codification of languages, diffusion of linguistic knowledge, language planning and language policies - constitute the first attestation of linguistic preoccupations worldwide. The twenty-seven contributions in this volume cover the history of grammatical and linguistic praxis from Antiquity to the present day. While most of the papers deal with Europe and the United States, some of them analyse linguistic activity in relation to languages in Africa, Asia or Australia.

Book Synopsis The Order of Things by : Michel Foucault
Download or read book The Order of Things written by Michel Foucault and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one defines "order" as a sorting of priorities, it becomes beautifully clear as to what Foucault is doing here. With virtuoso showmanship, he weaves an intensely complex history of thought. He dips into literature, art, economics and even biology in The Order of Things, possibly one of the most significant, yet most overlooked, works of the twentieth century. Eclipsed by his later work on power and discourse, nonetheless it was The Order of Things that established Foucault's reputation as an intellectual giant. Pirouetting around the outer edge of language, Foucault unsettles the surface of literary writing. In describing the limitations of our usual taxonomies, he opens the door onto a whole new system of thought, one ripe with what he calls "exotic charm". Intellectual pyrotechnics from the master of critical thinking, this book is crucial reading for those who wish to gain insight into that odd beast called Postmodernism, and a must for any fan of Foucault.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based around seven primary texts spanning 130 years, this volume explores the conceptual boundaries of structuralism, a scholarly movement and associated body of doctrines foundational to modern linguistics and many other humanities and social sciences. Each chapter in the volume presents a classic — and yet today underappreciated — text that addresses questions crucial to the evolution of structuralism. The texts are made accessible to present-day English-speaking readers through translation and extensive critical notes; each text is also accompanied by a detailed introduction that places it in its intellectual and historical context and outlines the insights that it contains. The volume reveals the complex genealogy of our ideas and enriches our understanding of their contemporary form and use.

Book Synopsis Speculative Grammar, Universal Grammar, and Philosophical Analysis of Language by : Dino Buzzetti

This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers originally presented at a seminar series on Speculative Grammar, Universal Grammar, and Philosophical Analysis, held at the University of Bologna in 1984. The seminars aimed at considering various aspects of the interplay between linguistic theories on the one hand, and theories of meaning and logic on the other. The point of view was mainly historical, but a theoretical approach was also considered relevant. Theories of grammar and related topics were taken as a focal point of interest; their interaction with philosophical reflections on languages was examined in presentations dealing with different authors and periods, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Download or read book Diachrony written by José M. González and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a few of the more prominent and persistent controversies among classical scholars about approaches and methods arise from a failure to appreciate the fundamental role of time in structuring the interpretation of Greek culture. Diachrony showcases the corresponding importance of diachronic models for the study of ancient Greek literature and culture. Diachronic models of culture reach beyond mere historical change to the systemically evolving dynamics of cultural institutions, practices, and artifacts. The papers collected here illustrate the construction and proper use of such models. They emphasize the complementarity of synchronic and diachronic perspectives and highlight the need to assess how well diachronic models fit history. The contributors to this volume strive to be methodologically explicit as they tackle a wide range of subjects with a variety of diachronic approaches. Their work shows both the difficulty and the promise of diachronic analysis. Our incomplete knowledge of Greek antiquity throughout time and the Greeks' own preoccupation with the past in the construction of their present make diachronic analysis not just invaluable but indispensable for the study of ancient Greek literature and culture.
