Book excerpt: "Despite recent progress in reading achievement among children in primary grades, many children are not moving beyond basic decoding skills to fluency and comprehension as they go on to higher grades. To address this problem, many policymakers suggest that reading coaches - master teachers who offer ongoing on-site instructional support for teachers - can improve teachers' practice and students' literacy skills. RAND researchers evaluated the middle school reading coach program in Florida to answer these questions: How is the program being implemented by the state, districts, schools, and individual coaches? What is the impact of coaching on teachers' practice and students' achievement in reading and mathematics? What features of reading coach models and practices are associated with better outcomes?"--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Knowledge of the implementation practices of successful elementary schools will be beneficial to other elementary principals who seek to improve student success in reading. This study examined perceptions of principals from elementary schools in Texas whose schools received the Gold Performance Acknowledgement (GPA) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for Continuous Improvement in Reading (CIR) on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in 2002. The study had two purposes: (1) to identify the principal's perception of the levels of implementation and impact of selected reading strategies used by selected elementary schools in Texas to improve student success in reading and (2) to determine the principal's perception of the extent to which Accelerated Reader (AR) and AR-like recommend practices were used in selected elementary schools in Texas. The research design for this study was descriptive. Parameters, which are descriptive measures of a population, were used since all 721 members of the population were mailed questionnaires. Research was conducted during the winter of 2004. Two hundred fifty-two principals responded. A questionnaire using a Likert type scale for the principals' responses was used to collect the data. Principals' perceptions were measured to determine the degree of implementation and impact of AR and other selected reading strategies. Data were analyzed for all 252 respondents for selected reading strategies and by the categories of AR and non-AR schools for AR recommended reading strategies and AR-like recommended reading strategies, respectively. This study identified the characteristics of a successful reading program in Texas elementary schools. To maximize their budgets while improving student success in reading, principals should provide their teachers with professional development, implement student/teacher conferences to direct reading practice, allow students to self-select books on their independent reading level for independent reading practice, consider use of literature circles, classroom libraries and reading textbooks, review the use of rewards and posting of goals to determine if these practices increase students' success in reading, assess computer reading programs to determine if there are less costly options available, and in schools using the AR program, review implementation practices for greater impact.

Book excerpt: Vaughan (2000) argued the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) is a cornerstone in the effort to achieve the most effective reading instruction. This statement was the foundation idea of this research study. The purpose of the study was to determine if receiving ARI instruction could improve student achievement in reading comprehension. This study examined the Stanford 10 Reading Comprehension subtext scores for a group of students in a rural school. There were two groups of students utilized in this study who were enrolled in the fourth grade: 107 students who received at least three years of ARI instruction and 112 students who received no ARI instruction during the previous three years. Based on the results of this study, there was no significant difference between the two groups of students with respect to reading achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in elementary reading comprehension achievement existed as a result of statewide implementation of the Alabama Reading Initiative post No Child Left Behind (nclb). Research supports the premise that targeted instruction in reading comprehension yields increases in reading achievement for students. In an effort to increase students' reading comprehension, the Alabama State Department of Education embarked upon a bold initiative targeting all areas of reading. The Alabama Reading Initiative (ari) was designed to address k-12 reading efforts in the state of Alabama. At its inception, three areas of reading were targeted: beginning reading instruction; expanded reading power; and intensive effective intervention (Barber, 2001). This current study sought to determine if differences in elementary reading comprehension achievement existed as a result of statewide implementation of the ari post nclb. Additionally, this study sought to determine if there were changes in the reading comprehension rates of the students based on their gender. Two separate cohorts of students' reading comprehension scores were analyzed. The first cohort (pre-ARI) consisted of students who were enrolled for three consecutive years (2003-2006) in grades 3-5. The second cohort of students (post-ARI) was also enrolled for three consecutive years (2006-2008) in grades 3-5. Using the sat-10 results, normal curve equivalent reading comprehension scores from the sat-10 were matched over the years of each of the two cohorts and were used to analyze the reading comprehension rates of the students to determine if there were significant changes over time. Quantitative methods, including a repeated measures anova, dependent and independent samples t-tests with a Bonferroni correction factor, mixed repeated measures anova, as well as a repeated measures analysis of covariance were used to analyze whether a reading comprehension achievement disparity existed between the two cohorts of students. The findings of this study determined that there no significant difference existed in the reading comprehension rates for the two cohorts of students over the period of time of the study. This means that for this particular urban school district, the use of the ari may not have impacted the number of students' reading comprehension achievement levels as may be found in other similar districts in the State of Alabama.
