Book excerpt: Understanding and providing the appropriate supports for African American male high school students is critical to their academic success. This study provided the opportunity to examine how principals and school counselors perceive the support given to African American male high school students in high schools in New York City. School counselors are viewed and utilized by principals in ways that may not allow them to demonstrate their expertise and provide support to vulnerable populations such as African American male high school students. The method of inquiry of this study was interviews of 10 high school principals and the 10 school counselors of these schools to determine how similar or different the perceptions of the school counselors’ role is in supporting African American male high school students. Overall, this study revealed several key findings, including the need for clarifying the roles and responsibilities of school counselors and providing good and relevant professional development for their professional growth. In addition, school counselors need support and resources to ensure the success of African American male high school students.
