Today he is acknowledged to have been a pioneering figure in both social anthropology and the study of comparative religion, deeply influencing the thinking of J. G. Frazer, Emile Durkheim and Sigmund Freud. The first full-length biography of Robertson Smith to be published for almost a hundred years, this text makes use of hitherto unknown material preserved by the Smith family and draws upon the extensive range of correspondence between Smith and such scholars as Albrecht Ritschl, Paul de Lagarde, Julius Wellhausen, Abraham Kuenen and Theodor Noldeke. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the biography locates and defines the place of this remarkable polymath within the context of Free Church Calvinism, the Scottish Enlightenment and 19th century German Protestant theology. It highlights Smith's interest in physics and philosophy, his friendship with contemporary artists, his Oriental travels, and his involvement in the social life of Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In recent years, the image of Smith as a comparative religionist has come to dominate all other perspectives and indeed tends now to overshadow his fame as an Old Testament scholar. This book seeks to redress the balance, aiming to discover the theological drive behind Smith's manifold activities.

Book excerpt: The economic, religious and cultural transformation of the northern Highlands in the years 1790 to 1850, can be linked directly to the Clearances - wholesale evictions of highland sub-tenants and small farmers by English landlords, who wished to make way for more profitable sheep farming. The low esteem in which English speakers regarded the Gaelic community and its language is evident. Yet, far from fighting change, the clergy stands accused of abetting the landlords by preaching the need for individual repentance and submission, thus securing a population passive towards the changes. Taking evidence from the far north of Sutherland and Ross - the epicentre of the crisis, author David Paton uses unusual and revealing evidence, including Gaelic poetry and descriptions of the emotional effects of a more complex and subtle picture. This question, debated within the ecumenical movement from the outset, is the force of the World Council of Churches' 1996 world conference on mission and evangelism. In these short pamphlets, edited by Christopher Duraisingh, Christians from a diversity of cultural contexts describe and reflect on what it has meant for the gospel to be proclaimed and lived out within the setting of their own culture, thus pointing to both the richness and challenges of this encounter. Early missionaries saw the Highlands and islands of northern Scotland as a 'wintry region' inhabited by 'wild and uncivilized Scots' who needed to be subdued by the preaching of the gospel and the suppression of Gaelic language and culture. Yet from the 19th century on, Protestant churches in the Highlands embraced Gaelic as a medium of spiritual communication and forged a strong bond between language and a distinctive evangelical spirituality.
