Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The brilliant coming-of-age-and-into-superstardom story of one of the greatest artists of all time, in his own words—featuring never-before-seen photos, original scrapbooks and lyric sheets, and the exquisite memoir he began writing before his tragic death NAMED ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND THE GUARDIAN • NOMINATED FOR THE NAACP IMAGE AWARD Prince was a musical genius, one of the most beloved, accomplished, and acclaimed musicians of our time. He was a startlingly original visionary with an imagination deep enough to whip up whole worlds, from the sexy, gritty funk paradise of “Uptown” to the mythical landscape of Purple Rain to the psychedelia of “Paisley Park.” But his most ambitious creative act was turning Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minnesota, into Prince, one of the greatest pop stars of any era. The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince—a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. The book is told in four parts. The first is the memoir Prince was writing before his tragic death, pages that bring us into his childhood world through his own lyrical prose. The second part takes us through Prince’s early years as a musician, before his first album was released, via an evocative scrapbook of writing and photos. The third section shows us Prince’s evolution through candid images that go up to the cusp of his greatest achievement, which we see in the book’s fourth section: his original handwritten treatment for Purple Rain—the final stage in Prince’s self-creation, where he retells the autobiography of the first three parts as a heroic journey. The book is framed by editor Dan Piepenbring’s riveting and moving introduction about his profound collaboration with Prince in his final months—a time when Prince was thinking deeply about how to reveal more of himself and his ideas to the world, while retaining the mystery and mystique he’d so carefully cultivated—and annotations that provide context to the book’s images. This work is not just a tribute to an icon, but an original and energizing literary work in its own right, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image—his undying gift to the world.

Book excerpt: Different versions of the Salmon People legend have been told for centuries by many tribes of Northwest Coast Indians. Though the tellings may differ in detail from tribe to tribe and era to era, all versions express the Indian belief that animals have spirits and can move freely between animal and human realms, choosing to feed humans when approached with proper respect and ceremony. Claire Rudolf Murphy's thought-provoking tale about the interdependence of humans and animals is based on anthropologist Franz Boas's accounts and on interviews with Tsimshian elders and craftsmen. Acclaimed Northwest Coast artist Duane Pasco enlivens the myth with his striking drawings. Claire Rudolf Murphy is the author of ten books for children including Children of the Gold Rush and Caribou Girl.

Download or read book The Prince written by Niccolo Machiavelli and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If any book could be called legendary, surely it is this one. Its author, Italian diplomat and philosopher NICCOL MACHIAVELLI (1469-1527) considered it his greatest work. Indeed, his thoughts on politics, as laid out so famously in this brief but profound work, have become so synonymous with him that his name has become an adjective: Machiavellian. How is political power achieved? How is it maintained? Though Machiavelli states explicitly that he is not discussing "Republics" here, only "Princedoms," this coldly rational guidebook to taking control and holding onto it contains such universal insights into human nature and the structure of human systems that his "advice" serves equally well in almost any power structure. With applications in such diverse realms as business, the military, even role-playing games, Machiavelli's rules for ruling continue to be required reading for students of politics, philosophy, and ethics.

Book Synopsis Gentle Janus, Merchant Prince by : Reinout Vos
Download or read book Gentle Janus, Merchant Prince written by Reinout Vos and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Janus face of the Dutch East Indies Company—representing a merchant on one side and a prince on the other—has long puzzled historians. How could a commercial enterprise, firmly rooted in a tradition of free trade, turn into a powerful monopolistic empire the moment its ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope? This book, based on Company archives and Malay historical material, offers a reconstruction of the VOC’s double role in the complex world of eighteenth-century Malay court politics. It describes the successes and failures of the VOC’s political trade system as practised in its tin trade in the Straits of Malacca from 1740 to 1800. Careful consideration is given to the Company’s relations with the sultanates of Pelembang and Johore, and the position of the VOC with respect to its English and Chinese competitors. The author’s main thesis is that the VOC’s political mode of operation, far from being a deviation from its proper merchant’s role, was an essential means to achieving success: trade privileges were ‘bought’ by rendering political support to indigenous princes. Contrary to popular opinion, however, the system was not based on forced deliveries, the merchant prince’s iron hand. When this resulted in stable and friendly alliances gentle Janus’s system could bear fruit, even in the difficult years of the late eighteenth century.
