Book excerpt: The young Ethiopian knew that his time was coming. The merciless Roman guards moved him up from the dungeon to a holding cell adjacent to a solid iron gate leading directly to the arena floor. Though the walls of his small cell were made of thick bricks, Kenyon could hear the roaring crowd as if he were standing in the very midst of the arena. He tried to close his eyes in order to relax, but his efforts were futile. Everything about the dank dungeon stimulated his senses in a way that pumped him full of fear. A few moments before, two men convicted of a callous murder were led past his cell. The Roman guards covered the men from head to toe with a thick, oily pitch. Once they were out in the middle of the arena, they were set ablaze as human torches. The masses laughed and applauded as the men cried out and were charred beyond recognition. Kenyon silently resolved in his heart that he would at least die an honorable death. If he were to fight a gladiator, he would rush upon the sword. If he were thrown to the dogs, he would simply lie flat. The shadow of a massive guard appeared at the door of his cell. "Ethiopian, it is time."

Book excerpt: It is 60 A.D. in the Ethiopian kingdom of Axum. Kenyon is a proud young prince who has just returned home to his father’s emerging kingdom. Unknown to him, conspiring forces have set in motion a plot that will alter his life forever. Two of the ancient world’s greatest powers, the Kushite kingdom of Meroë and the Roman Empire, have once again been set on a collision course that will either draw the two dominions together or plunge the civilized world into a realm of war and death. When a hostile takeover of the Axumite kingdom prompts an unthinkable tragedy, Kenyon is ultimately sold into slavery in the Roman Empire. In the process, the Ethiopian prince transforms from a brash youth into a determined man as he fights to find his purpose, despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Prince of Aethiopia is the third chapter in the Chosen Vessel Series. Laced with romance, intrigue, and drama, the tale transports readers into the heroic struggles faced by the first century church – struggles shared by the young Ethiopian prince as he fights to find his destiny. . .

Book excerpt: The time is 1769 and the place is the Ethiopian Empire, last stronghold of Black Power on the Continent of Africa. The Ethiopian Empire, known as the Camelot of Africa, is soon to be under siege from European Colonial Powers. First, though, Ethiopia must survive the Zemene Mesafint, the so-called Era of the Princes. It was a tumultuous time in Ethiopian History, as the proud African nation found itself with weakened leadership, and the chaos brought forth by too many Princes vying for power. Ethiopian Christians and Ethiopian Muslims also found themselves at odds over the country's direction. In the City of Dire Dawa, close to the often contested Ethiopian/Somali Border, Prince Abraham Tilahun, the Patriarch of House Tilahun, and his beloved wife Lady Bethlehem try desperately to stem the tide of chaos. Dark times await the Ethiopian Noble Houses. Things are complicated by the actions of their only son, the tall, handsome and unruly Prince Joseph, for whom hedonism and womanizing are a way of life. Prince Joseph is carrying on a passionate affair with Lady Amira Abreha, his mother's erstwhile best friend, and bedding courtesans at the local bawdy houses, but he has a mysterious bond with Prince Malik of House Adugna, his supposed best friend. Prince Joseph is Bisexual and not afraid to challenge taboos and conventions. What can be done about a man whose passions are limitless Can the House of Tilahun survive its darkest time

Sci-fi and fantasy combine in this epic journey to the stars. Yared Heywat lives an isolated life in Addis Prime -- a hardscrabble city with rundown tech, lots of rules, and not much to do. His worrywart Uncle Moti and bionic lioness Besa are his only family... and his only friends. Often in trouble for his thrill-seeking antics and wisecracking sense of humor, those same qualities make Yared a star player of the underground augmented reality game, The Hunt for Kaleb's Obelisk. But when a change in the game rules prompts Yared to log in with his real name, it triggers an attack that rocks the city. In the chaos, Uncle Moti disappears. Suddenly, all the stories Yared's uncle told him as a young boy are coming to life, of kingdoms in the sky and city-razing monsters. And somehow Yared is at the center of them. Together with Besa and the Ibis -- a game rival turned reluctant ally -- Yared must search for his uncle... and answers to his place in a forgotten, galaxy-spanning war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia, was as brilliant as he was formidable. An early proponent of African unity and independence who claimed to be a descendant of King Solomon, he fought with the Allies against the Axis powers during World War II and was a messianic figure for the Jamaican Rastafarians. But the final years of his empire saw turmoil and revolution, and he was ultimately overthrown and assassinated in a communist coup. Written by Asfa-Wossen Asserate, Haile Selassie’s grandnephew, this is the first major biography of this final “king of kings.” Asserate, who spent his childhood and adolescence in Ethiopia before fleeing the revolution of 1974, knew Selassie personally and gained intimate insights into life at the imperial court. Introducing him as a reformer and an autocrat whose personal history—with all of its upheavals, promises, and horrors—reflects in many ways the history of the twentieth century itself, Asserate uses his own experiences and painstaking research in family and public archives to achieve a colorful and even-handed portrait of the emperor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to explore how African American writing and art engaged with visions of Ethiopia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries As the only African nation, with the exception of Liberia, to remain independent during the colonization of the continent, Ethiopia has long held significance for and captivated the imaginations of African Americans. In Black Land, Nadia Nurhussein delves into nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American artistic and journalistic depictions of Ethiopia, illuminating the increasing tensions and ironies behind cultural celebrations of an African country asserting itself as an imperial power. Nurhussein navigates texts by Walt Whitman, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Pauline Hopkins, Harry Dean, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, George Schuyler, and others, alongside images and performances that show the intersection of African America with Ethiopia during historic political shifts. From a description of a notorious 1920 Star Order of Ethiopia flag-burning demonstration in Chicago to a discussion of the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie as Time magazine’s Man of the Year for 1935, Nurhussein illuminates the growing complications that modern Ethiopia posed for American writers and activists. American media coverage of the African nation exposed a clear contrast between the Pan-African ideal and the modern reality of Ethiopia as an antidemocratic imperialist state: Did Ethiopia represent the black nation of the future, or one of an inert and static past? Revising current understandings of black transnationalism, Black Land presents a well-rounded exploration of an era when Ethiopia’s presence in African American culture was at its height.
