Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Logic In the pages which follow will be found the outlines of the logic of a set of categorical forms which are not Aristotle's own. It is only the fragment of a general theory, but the content of all the chapters of the old logic, which are commonly regarded as essential, except that one which deals with the calculus of classes, will be found included. In the first appendix the relation of these new forms to the traditional ones has been pointed out in detail. I have at least one debt, which calls for a definite acknowledgement. It is to my friend and teacher, Mr. Edgar A. Singer, Jr., that I owe what training I have had in the science. He has never failed, through hints thrown out in conversation, to correct my misapprehensions. But my indebtedness is more specific than this. I have so far employed his own method, a method developed in his academic lectures, that I could scarcely have ventured upon the publication of these outlines of a theory without his express permission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Logic The recent developments in logical theory fol lowing upon the contributions of Boole, Pierce, and Schroder have seemed to place the subject be yond the reach of the average student and even in most instances beyond the reach of the technically equipped philosopher. The result has been to re duce the attention that was formerly given to ele mentary instruction in logic and to displace the traditional course from its originally dominant posi tion in the university curriculum. The conviction is abroad that the ancient organon is so far inferior to the modern instrument perfected by the critical labors of Peano, Frege, Russell, and others, that it no longer deserves the attention once bestowed upon it. These objections the writer has endeavored to meet, in the first instance by introducing no symbols whatever, save the ones employed by traditional logic itself, so that the treatment may be followed by any intelligent reader, and secondly by keeping modern developments always in mind while following the traditional order of treatment. Finally, he has met the recent contention that the classical system does not hold true in all of its parts, by showing in the last chapter of this work that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer General Method: Being an Introduction to Educational Theory and Practice on the Basis of Logic, for Use in Normal Schools Educational science must seek for materials in many fields. The purpose here is to point out certain considerations drawn from the study of Logic which have a direct bearing upon educational theory and practice. Psychology is almost invariably given a place on programmes for the training of teachers. It deals, however, with mental life in its structural aspects chiefly; and the educator cannot afford to omit or postpone the study of the functional side of mind. He is vitally interested in problems relating to the value or validity of cognitive processes which psychology aims simply to describe. He must enquire into the value of feeling as well as into its various forms. He cannot be satisfied with a mere description of volitional experience, but desires to go forward to a valuation of conduct. The three closely connected fields of logic, aesthetics, and ethics thus lie alongside that of psychology in a complementary relation which cannot be ignored in a programme of studies for Normal Schools. Indeed, the beginner in educational science might far more easily dispense with Psychology than with Logic.
