Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersaline environments are the principal habitats of petroleum deposition. They are also of intense evolutionary and ecological interest. This book presents a cross-disciplinary examination of the variety of halophilic microorganisms and their roles in modifying the ecology and geochemistry of hypersaline environments. The book also covers in detail the various inland and coastal habitats where halophilic microorganisms thrive. Geographically, hypersaline environments extend from the tropics to the poles, and from the terrestrial to the submarine. Organisms capable of living in such environments have faced unique evolutionary challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is composed of papers presented at an International Symposium on Athalassic (Inland) Salt Lakes, which was hosted by the University of Adelaide, South Australia, during a week in October 1979. The genesis of the Symposium was at the Copenhagen Congress of the International Association of Limnology (S.1. L.) where it was noted that a number of papers concerned with inland saline lakes were distributed throughout sessions in such a way as to make it difficult to attend all of them. A number of participants at the Congress felt that the ecology of salt lakes had greater homogeneity or cohesiveness than this sort of distribution would suggest, and it was decided that a symposium on salt lakes be held. The symposium was the first under the aegis of the S.l. L. to be held in Australia, and it was very well attended, with participants coming from many countries. The week long programme produced a number of lively and interesting sessions on all aspects of athalassic saline lakes. Participants stayed on after the Symposium for an expedition to Lake Eyre, in the nQrth of South Australia, and were given one of the best of all possible introductions to the Australian environment.

Book excerpt: The McMurdo Dry Valleys form the largest relatively ice-free area on the Antarctic continent. The perennially ice-covered lakes, ephemeral streams and extensive areas of exposed soil are subject to low temperatures, limited precipitation and salt accumulation. The dry valleys thus represent a region where life approaches its environmental limits. This unique ecosystem has been studied for several decades as an analog to environments on other planets, particularly Mars. For the first time, the detailed terrestrial research of the dry valleys is brought together here, presented from an astrobiological perspective. Chapters include a discussion on the history of research in the valleys, a geological background of the valleys, setting them up as analogs for Mars, followed by chapters on the various sub-environments in the valleys such as lakes, glaciers and soils. Includes concluding chapters on biodiversity and other analog environments on Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 57. Lakes of the dry valley region near McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, which are perennially ice-covered (approximately 4 m thick) and contain only microorganisms in the plankton, present unique systems for studies in hydrologic optics. Profiles of the flux and spectral distribution of photosynthetically available radiation (400-700 nm) and the optical properties of suspended particulate material were measured for Lake Bonney and Lake Fryxell.
