Book excerpt: “The Way Up Is Down” There are universal spiritual laws that govern the success of our lives, and Pride Versus Humility explores one of those vital laws that is often overlooked: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). With candor and biblical force, Derek Prince confronts central issues concerning pride and humility. As always, what he shares is not only insightful but also immensely practical. Ranging from the vital role of humility as we draw closer to God, to the absolute necessity for humility in any position of leadership, to the indispensable role of humility in our relationships with others, the contents of this book can have a life-changing impact on you as you learn the hazards of pride and discover God’s perfect pattern for humility.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Vaughn wrote these reflections over a century ago, and they are as pertinent today as when they were first assembled into a book. "There is no Saint however holy and innocent who may not truly consider himself the greatest sinner in the world. It is enough that he knows himself to be man to recognize that he is liable to commit all the evil of which man is capable." This thought alone will inspire us to humility and this book is a great aid to true humility, which is essential to salvation. St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!" We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. This book is a photographic reprint of the original The original has been inspected and many imperfections in the existing copy have been corrected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humility, Pride, and Christian Virtue Theory proposes an account of humility that relies on the most radical Christian sayings about humility, especially those found in Augustine and the early monastic tradition. It argues that this was the view of humility that put Christian moral thought into decisive conflict with the best Greco-Roman moral thought. This radical Christian account of humility has been forgotten amidst contemporary efforts to clarify and retrieve the virtue of humility for secular life. Kent Dunnington shows how humility was repurposed during the early-modern era-particularly in the thought of Hobbes, Hume, and Kant-to better serve the economic and social needs of the emerging modern state. This repurposed humility insisted on a role for proper pride alongside humility, as a necessary constituent of self-esteem and a necessary motive of consistent moral action over time. Contemporary philosophical accounts of humility continue this emphasis on proper pride as a counterbalance to humility. By contrast, radical Christian humility proscribes pride altogether. Dunnington demonstrates how such a radical view need not give rise to vices of humility such as servility and pusillanimity, nor need such a view fall prey to feminist critiques of humility. But the view of humility set forth makes little sense abstracted from a specific set of doctrinal commitments peculiar to Christianity. This study argues that this is a strength rather than a weakness of the account since it displays how Christianity matters for the shape of the moral life.

Book excerpt: Pride and Humility: A Guide to Better Understanding Yourself and Others was written to help people discover where pride has infected their life and how to develop humility instead. The study spends six weeks taking an honest look at six varieties of pride, including the pride of self-sufficiency, the pride of rebellion, the pride of insecurity, the pride of stubbornness, the pride of superiority, and the pride that is not a sin. Following this journey, six weeks are spent contemplating what it means to grow in humility.

Book excerpt: The following essay on Pride and Humility appeared some time ago in the Herald of Truth, and is now published in pamphlet form with additions and improvements, at the request of some of the brethren who have thought it proper and needful to republish the same for distribution, as a warning and a call to the proud, and an admonition and encouragement to all Christian believers, especially Mennonites, to remind them of their duties toward themselves and their children. May the God of grace (without whose help and blessing all our efforts are vain) grant his blessing on this humble work, which was written from good motives, and may it be a powerful and effectual voice of warning to many hearts, to convict them and move them to reflect, in this precious day of grace, on their soul's eternal salvation and peace. Yea, God grant that it may be a refreshment and a blessing to many a lukewarm and weary heart, and that it may redound to his honor alone, is the ardent prayer of the humble writer. Amen.

Book excerpt: How does humility feature as a part of human experience, and how can opportunities to decenter the self empower us through present day circumstances? Radical Humility is a collection of essays written by people attempting to be humble at a time when public humility is scarce. Contributors come from a diverse group of experts, activists, makers, scholars, and practitioners: philosophers, psychologists, artists; a librarian, a farmer, a lawyer, a U.S. Navy Captain, and others who've reflected upon the role of humility. Some are leading scholars in their field; others are as-yet unpublished writers. All--the farmer, the librarian, the journalist, the sailor--speak to the ordinary everyday actions that offer significant opportunity for restraint and reflection to empower us personally and politically. For every person who feels uneasy and diminished after subjecting the most intimate parts of their lives to Likes and Followers, and for every person who is uneasy with presidential boasting and disregard for truth, Radical Humility's writers' perspectives are crucial at this turning point in our personal and political lives. Contributors: Aaron Ahuvia, Russell Belk, Charles M. Blow, Richard C. Boothman, Agnes Callard, Lynette Clemetson, Tyler Denmead, Nadia Danienta, Mickey Duzyj, Kevin Em, Eranda Jayawickreme, Kevin Hamilton, Eranda Jayawickreme, Troy Jollimore, Melissa Koenig, Aric Rindfleisch, Valerie Tiberius, and Ami Walsh

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary analysis presents an innovative examination of the nature of pride and humility, including all their slippery nuances and points of connection. By combining insights from visual art, literature, philosophy, religious studies, and psychology, this volume adapts a complementary rather than an oppositional approach to examine how pride and humility reinforce and inform one another. This method produces a robust, substantial, and meaningful description of these important concepts. The analysis takes into account key elements of pride and humility, including self-esteem and self-confidence, human interconnectedness, power’s function and limitations, and the role of fear. Shawn R. Tucker explores the many inflections of these terms, inflections that cast them by turns as positive or negative, emboldening or discouraging, and salubrious or vicious depending upon the context and manner in which they are used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several years of research into the new discoveries of science and cosmology and the new translations of the worlds religions, I have found that we are not only going extinct, but that we are the ones doing it through pride and arrogance. We as a species have developed an addiction to this ugly, disconnecting emotion. Totally lost to us is the unifying, sustainable emotion of humility. Clearly, unless we can recover humilitys natural state, we will continue in the violent, frightened, unjust lifestyle of pride, and we will force our own speciesand many others on the Earthinto extinction. This book maps out our personal, group, and species pride so there can be no doubt of its powerful influence inand lethal power overeverything about us. A study of how we can get out of pride and into a state of humility occupies most of the book because that is what we must do right now. If we are to live enjoyable and meaningful lives and have a future, we must throw off pride and enter into humility. This book is a map, guide, and call to hope for our joyful and sustainable future. Its a call to come out of our slavery to self to see and embrace other humans, groups, and species of the Earth. In this new state of humility, we will be released to see ourselves not just as citizens of the Earth, but as citizens of the cosmos. In humility, we will discover that we are not the center of anything but an important part of everything. We will throw off things like prides violence, illusions of control, worry, fear, anger, fighting, comparing, judging, competing, and taking everything personally. We will take on humilitys laughterespecially at ourselveslove, justice, peace, forgiveness, identifying with and appreciating everything, and being all-inclusive. The natural thing would have been for us to evolve into humility. It is the only way that any reflective species in the cosmos can ever hope to survive and flourish.

This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to interpret and reflect on Augustine's seminal argument concerning humility and pride, especially in politics and philosophy, in The City of God. Mary Keys shows how contemporary readers have much to gain from engaging Augustine's lengthy argument on behalf of virtuous humility. She also demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the classical and Christian philosophical-rhetorical modes of discourse in The City of God enables readers to appreciate and evaluate Augustine's nuanced case for humility in politics, philosophy, and religion. Comprised of a series of interpretive essays and commentaries following Augustine's own order of segments and themes in The City of God, Keys' volume unpacks the author's complex text and elucidates its challenge, meaning, and importance for contemporary readers. It also illuminates a central, yet easily underestimated theme with perennial relevance in a classic work of political thought and religion.
