Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romania’s income per capita has increased from 26 percent of the EU-28 average in 2000 to 63 percent in 2017, but this economic success rests on the wobbly foundations of unfavorable demographics, weak human capital, and ineffective institutions. Going forward, stronger competition and better human capital are critical to increasing the economy’s growth potential. Romanian manufacturing ï¬?rms are exposed to domestic and international competition, ensuring the flow of resources and market shares to more efï¬?cient players. This has not been the case for services, where anticompetitive regulations and direct state control often limit efï¬?ciency gains. Romanian state-owned enterprises do not compete on an equal footing with private sector ï¬?rms, distorting market outcomes and hampering the efï¬?cient allocation of resources. Removal of these restrictions would have a signiï¬?cant positive impact on GDP growth. Competitively neutral policies are needed to ensure that all enterprises, public or private, domestic or foreign, face the same set of rules. Romania’s human capital accumulation--proxied by the World Bank’s Human Capital Index (HCI)--is the lowest in the European Union and varies widely across counties. Disparities in education outcomes remain relevant across and within regions of Romania. Learning gaps in primary and secondary education persist. These can be seen clearly between urban and rural areas, across regions, and across social groups, requiring changes both at the systems level and at the learning-center level. In the labor market, the automation of production processes has started driving demand for higher levels of cognitive skills, while jobs involving the routine application of procedural knowledge are shrinking in number. A paradigm shift would require reforms in primary and secondary schooling, in addition to more targeted actions, to establish an effective skills development system to bolster human capital.

Book excerpt: Numerous authors have presented analyses of the world food problem and the appropriate role of animals in food production and have drawn qualitative conclusions. However, projection and planning require quantitative considerations, and this volume addresses that challenge. Experts in animal science, farm management, economics, international agriculture, and nutrition elucidate and debate germane issues with scientific rigor. They examine the efficiency and economics of animal production, feed resource availability, interactions between plant and animal agricultures, international trade, resource allocation, roles of animals in developing countries, and the nutritional values and limitations of animal products.

Book excerpt: The online economy offers challenges to traditional businesses as well as incredible opportunities. Chris Anderson makes the compelling case that in many instances businesses can succeed best by giving away more than they charge for. Known as "Freemium," this combination of free and paid is emerging as one of the most powerful digital business models. In Free, Chris Anderson explores this radical idea for the new global economy and demonstrates how it can be harnessed for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike. In the twenty-first century, Free is more than just a promotional gimmick: It's a business strategy that is essential to a company's successful future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pricing or benchmarking is a process of evaluating the performance of a financial company’s products and services or systems, against other businesses, considered to be at the top of their field, by applying a measurement of “best in performance.” This book includes contributions from the leading global experts in the field who tackle topics such as whether the Islamic financial system has been dependent on the LIBOR / EURIBOR in its benchmarking exercises to date, and thus, whether it will be affected negatively by the predicted non-existence of the LIBOR / EURIBOR from 2021 onwards. They also address the question of whether the Islamic financial system requires benchmarking of its products and services and consider the emergence of Sharī ͑ah-justified benchmarking in today’s Islamic financial system. Additionally, they look at how benchmarking formulas should be adapted to ensure the satisfaction of customers within the principles of Maqasid al-Sharī ͑ah. It takes a legal and institutional approach to the subject, which readers will find particularly valuable, as there are various forms of Islamic finance institutions that do not conform to established models in the finance industry. Furthermore, there are emerging business models that will benefit from this line of investigation. This book offers a timely analysis of these issues and redresses the existing misconceptions and misinterpretations pertaining to benchmarking, in an Islamic finance context, and, as such, provides guidance and strategies for future directions. It will appeal to researchers of Islamic banking, finance, and insurance, as well as, practitioners, particularly standard setting bodies, regulators, and policy makers.

Book excerpt: Do you want to know how a quintessentially British brand expands into the Chinese market, how organizations incorporate social media into their communication campaigns, or how a department store can channel its business online? What can you learn from these practices and how could it influence your career, whether in marketing or not? Marketing, 4th edition, will provide the skills vital to successfully engaging with marketing across all areas of society, from dealing with skeptical consumers, moving a business online, and deciding which pricing strategy to adopt, through to the ethical implications of marketing to children, and being aware of how to use social networking sites to a business advantage. In this edition, a broader range of integrated examples and market insights within each chapter demonstrate the relevance of theory to the practice, featuring companies such as Porsche, Facebook, and L'Oreal. The diversity of marketing on a global scale is showcased by examples that include advertising in the Middle East, Soberana marketing in Panama, and LEGO's expansion into emerging markets. Theory into practice boxes relate these examples back the theoretical frameworks, models, and concepts outlined in the chapter, giving a fully integrated overview of not just what marketing theory looks like in practice, but how it can be used to promote a company's success. Video interviews with those in the industry offer a truly unique insight into the fascinating world of a marketing practitioner. For the fourth edition, the authors speak to a range of companies, from Withers Worldwide to Aston Martin, the City of London Police to Spotify, asking marketing professionals to talk you through how they dealt with a marketing problem facing their company. Review and discussion questions conclude each chapter, prompting readers to examine the themes discussed in more detail and encouraging them to engage critically with the theory. Links to seminal papers throughout each chapter also present the opportunity to take learning further. Employing their widely-praised writing style, the authors continue to encourage you to look beyond the classical marketing perspectives by contrasting these with the more modern services and societal schools of thought, while new author, Sara Rosengren, provides a fresh European perspective to the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is all about the economic empowerment of the common man. More than 80% of the people are under sheer darkness and away from real development. When we talk and see of development, it is less than 20 % of the country. Historically and systematically large sections of the people were kept under darkness. And the trend hasn’t seen light for quite some time despite all the efforts from many eminent persons from different walks of life. Perhaps, they all used only their minds and lacked in their heart while trying to find solutions. The author in this book has attempted afresh some steps with a bottom up approach to achieve real development of all, especially the left-out 80%; and achieve comprehensive economic development across every nook and corner of the country. This book talks about Unique Natural Endowment Theory, Graded Self-sufficient Model of Regional Economic Development; and analysed the structural needs in each sector of the economy so as to address the persistent on the ground problems. At present, entrepreneurial knowledge is at a low level among the larger mass; and challenges to micro entrepreneurship are high. The book also talks about entrepreneurial spirit and processes for the common man. This book discovers ways to reach new heights of growth and development in New India. This book has dreams for every common man and tries to find ways to materialise the individual dreams of the billion plus people of India. That's why this book is - One Vision for a Billion Dreams.
