This has lead to many claims that online markets should be highly competitive. One would expect that price dispersion would disappear if price search costs were close to zero. Recent empirical studies suggest that price dispersion exists, and is persistent on the Internet. The dissertation sheds some light on the forces driving price dispersion on the Internet and influencing the degree of price competition in online markets. The dissertation consists of two parts, one empirical and two theoretical. The first part is an empirical study of price dispersion in the online market for college textbooks. The second part investigates the role that firm heterogeneity plays in sustaining price dispersion by extending existing theoretical models to allow for varying market share across firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic analysis of the digital economy has been a rapidly developing research area for more than a decade. Through authoritative examination by leading scholars, this Handbook takes a closer look at particular industries, business practices, and policy issues associated with the digital industry. The volume offers an up-to-date account of key topics, discusses open questions, and provides guidance for future research. It offers a blend of theoretical and empirical works that are central to understanding the digital economy. The chapters are presented in four sections, corresponding with four broad themes: 1) infrastructure, standards, and platforms; 2) the transformation of selling, encompassing both the transformation of traditional selling and new, widespread application of tools such as auctions; 3) user-generated content; and 4) threats in the new digital environment. The first section covers infrastructure, standards, and various platform industries that rely heavily on recent developments in electronic data storage and transmission, including software, video games, payment systems, mobile telecommunications, and B2B commerce. The second section takes account of the reduced costs of online retailing that threatens offline retailers, widespread availability of information as it affects pricing and advertising, digital technology as it allows the widespread employment of novel price and non-price strategies (bundling, price discrimination), and auctions, as well as better tar. The third section addresses the emergent phenomenon of user-generated content on the Internet, including the functioning of social networks and open source. Finally, the fourth section discusses threats arising from digitization and the Internet, namely digital piracy, privacy and internet security concerns.

Beyond this relative success, E-commerce raises many questions. Are electronic markets more competitive than traditional markets? How can we explain price dispersion on Internet? This paper deals with the pricing strategies of on-line retailers. For this purpose, we have collected data about CD prices on Internet during June and July 2001. This data set enables us to establish that online prices are strongly dispersed and rather volatile. Then we develop a repeated game model to analyze behaviors of CD retailers. Hence we prove that the probability of price collusion should increase with the age of a CD and decrease with its popularity. In other words, a collusion between CD retailers is more likely when the demand for a CD declines. This hypothesis is not rejected by econometric regressions on price level and price dispersion. These results give evidence of a relaxed competition on the older and less popular CD records.

In our competitive world, retailing is an exciting, complex and critical sector of business in most developed as well as emerging economies. Today, the retailing industry is being buffeted by a number of forces simultaneously, for example the growth of online retailing and the advent of ‘radio frequency identification’ (RFID) technology. Making sense of it all is not easy but of vital importance to retailing practitioners, analysts and policymakers.

Book excerpt: I study price dispersion and the impact of market concentration and reputation using data collected from China's online markets for consumer electronics. The data provides not only the price information but also the recent sales volume for each seller. It shows that price dispersion does not diminish over time. Although I draw the same conclusion as the research on US market using the gap measurement between the two lists with lowest prices, I find the gap measurement itself is not an effective indicator. Using proper measurement of price dispersion, I find the dispersion is larger in larger markets, which contradicts the findings from data which do not include sales information. Moreover, I find the reputation and services provided by online sellers has little impact on their prices, except for the registered sellers.

In online commerce, physical search costs are low, yet price dispersion is common. We use browsing data from eBay to estimate a model of consumer search and price competition when retailers offer homogeneous goods. We find that retail margins are on the order of 10%, and use the model to analyze the design of search rankings. Our model explains most of the effects of a major re-design of eBay's product search, and allows us to identify conditions where narrowing consumer choice sets can be pro-competitive. Finally, we examine a subsequent A/B experiment run by eBay that illustrates the greater difficulties in designing search algorithms for differentiated products, where price is only one of the relevant product attributes.

Book excerpt: It has been hypothesized that the Internet lowers search costs and that electronic markets are more competitive than conventional markets. As a result, price dispersion (defined as the distribution of prices of an item with the same measured characteristics across sellers) is expected to be absent from these markets. However, contrary to this expectation, researchers have found that price dispersion in electronic markets is substantial and no narrower than in conventional markets. The observed price dispersion could be due to differences in the services offered by different e-tailers, or to the fact that electronic markets may not be more information-efficient and competitive than conventional markets. This study examined 6,739 price quotes from 105 e-tailers for 581 items in eight product categories and tested if retailer heterogeneity explains online price dispersion. The general conclusion is that the proportion of the price dispersion explained by heterogeneity in e-tailer is small, and that substantial amounts of price dispersion remain after correcting for the influence of e-tailer services. In other words, online price dispersion is persistent even after controlling for e-tailers' service heterogeneity. Evidence still indicates that electronic markets are not necessarily information-efficient. There are apparently gains associated with search for those who do not already know what the best deal is.

Book excerpt: We investigate how online price dispersion has evolved since the bursting of the Internet bubble by comparing price dispersion levels in years 2000, 2001, and 2003 and between multi-channel and pure play e-tailers. The results show that although online price dispersion declined between 2000 and 2001 when there was a shakeout in Internet retailing, it increased from 2001 to 2003, the post bubble period, in particular, for desktop computers, laptop computers, PDAs, electronics and software. The proportion of items for which price dispersion at multi-channel retailers was higher than that at pure play e-tailers, increased steadily during 2000-2003. These findings suggest that online price dispersion is persistent even as Internet markets mature.
