Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Price Regulation Under Codes of Fair Competition Provisions of this nature, although included in the majority of codes, actually became effective in a relatively small proportion of these cases because nra did not approve the price schedules or cost systems necessary to effectuate them. Nevertheless, minimum price controls were applied to codes covering a substantial and representative section of American Industry. This study is concerned with an appraisal of the extent to which these devices succeeded in solving the immediate problems at which they were directed. Although the wide social mid economic implications of any such interference with the price mechanism are of extreme importance, such considerations have been excluded as being beyond the scope of this study. Because of the limitations of time and personnel, the investigation was confined to twenty eight industries in which minimum price regulation was attempted industries selected as representative of various parts of the industrial structure, of the economic problems encountered, and of the types of minimum price devices. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed picture of the institutionalist movement in American economics concentrating on the period between the two World Wars. The discussion brings a new emphasis on the leading role of Walton Hamilton in the formation of institutionalism, on the special importance of the ideals of 'science' and 'social control' embodied within the movement, on the large and close network of individuals involved, on the educational programs and research organizations created by institutionalists and on the significant place of the movement within the mainstream of interwar American economics. In these ways the book focuses on the group most closely involved in the active promotion of the movement, on how they themselves constructed it, on its original intellectual appeal and promise and on its institutional supports and sources of funding.

Book Synopsis The Coming of the New Deal by : Arthur M. Schlesinger
Download or read book The Coming of the New Deal written by Arthur M. Schlesinger and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2003-07-09 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume two of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s Age of Roosevelt series describes Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first tumultuous years in the White House. Coming into office at the bottom of the Great Depression, FDR told the American people that they have nothing to fear but fear itself. The conventional wisdom having failed, he tried unorthodox remedies to avert economic collapse. His first hundred days restored national morale, and his New Dealers filled Washington with new approaches to recovery and reform. Combining idealistic ends with realistic means, Roosevelt proposed to humanize, redeem, and rescue capitalism. The Coming of the New Deal, written with Schlesinger’s customary verve, is a gripping account of critical years in the history of the republic. “Monumental…authoritative…spirited…one of the major works in American historical literature.”—New York Times “Impelling, an achievement as much in its sensitivity as in its scholarship…It is essential reading.”—Kirkus Reviews

Download or read book The Coming of the New Deal, 1933-1935 written by Arthur Meier Schlesinger and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2003 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraying the United States from the Great War to the Great Depression, The Crisis of the Old Order covers the Jazz Age and the rise and fall of the cult of business. For a season, prosperity seemed permanent, but the illusion came to an end when Wall Street crashed in October 1929. Public trust in the wisdom of business leadership crashed too. With a dramatist's eye for vivid detail and a scholar's respect for accuracy, Schlesinger brings to life the era that gave rise to FDR and his New Deal and changed the public face of the United States forever.
