Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prevocational Education in the Public Schools During the past five years considerable interest has been developed in the problem of securing a better ad justment of our educational methods and ideals to the needs of those Who, though they form the vast majority of our children, are, for one reason or another, deriving the least benefit from the present school system, and are leaving its care altogether before reaching the age oi sixteen or seventeen years. Such school systems as have done experimental Work looking to the solution of this problem are constantly receiving requests for information relating to the pur pose of the Work, the methods which are being em ployed, and the results realized or expected. It is believed that school administrators and school teachers in general Will find something of interest and value in the information presented in this volume re garding one important branch of this experimental Work, namely prevocational education. For the purpose of collecting and of organizing such information the University of Chicago has conducted, during the past three years, an experimental industrial class. Instruction both in shopwork and in the book subjects has been given very largely by graduate stu dents in the Department of Education, mature men and women sincerely interested in the larger aspects of the problem presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public School Methods, Vol. 1 Many people who purchase books fail to derive the greatest benefit from their purchase because they do not at first take the trouble to become acquainted with the plan and Scope Of the work. The editor Of Public School Methods wishes to forestall this difficulty by urging every purchaser of a set Of these volumes to read the Preface and Foreword as the first step in the use of the work. In vol. III, Chapter IX, Books and Libraries, will be found specific directions for using books, and every teacher will find these directions helpful in showing her how to use Public School Methods. The second feature to which we wish to call special atten tion is Plans for Teaching. These plans follow the chapters on all the common branches, and carry the work Of each subject through the year for each grade. In the first grade they even go into details for each day's lesson. In the others they outline the work for each month. The plans follow the most recent courses Of study. They have been prepared by those who have devoted many years as practical teachers; consequently, they are thoroughly practicable. Nothing is suggested that has not proved successful wherever it has been tried. Teachers will find these plans a safe guide, and their use will save much time and effort which can be profitably spent in other ways. The close relation existing between the Kindergarten and the first grade in the public schools has been recognized, and both the Kindergarten and primary teacher will find the chapter Kindergarten especially helpful. This Chapter was pre pared by Miss Katharine Martin Of the School of Education, University of Chicago, and is strong and practical throughout. Many new stories with illustrations have been added to the chapters on Reading, and the teachers will find this new material valuable in making the connection between the lessons on the blackboard and those in the primer. It also furnishes excellent material for supplementary reading. The chapter on Language by Miss Achsah May Harris Of the State Normal School, Emporia, Kansas, is replete with methods, suggestions and material covering this important work for the first three grades. Every page Of this chapter is practical and the suggestions can be applied in any school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Schools and Other Institutions, Agencies, and Means Designed for the Professional Education of Teachers, Vol. 1: United States and British Provinces While Connecticut was discussing the subject, or slumbering over it, with the half patriarchal, half poetical dream, which is apt to come over us when we think of our venerable common school system, Massachusetts was acting not only in this but in other departments of educational improve ment, with a vigor and liberality which has placed her public schools over at least one half of her territory, at least a half century in advance of our -own in towns of the same wealth and population. N ew-york, too, whose school system as originally drafted by a native of Connecticut, was copied in its essential features from our own, under the lead of De Witt Clinton in 1826, commenced a series of improvements which resulted in Teachers Departments, District Libraries, Union Schools, County Inspection Teachers' Institutes, and a Normal School, which have done more, and are doing more now to develop the resources of the State than her gigantic system of railroads and canals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Schools for City Boys However, what the public at large has failed to accomplish for all the children private individuals have been able to accomplish for a few of the more fortunate. The idea of the country school for city children, supported by private tuition and private means, as worked out practically at Baltimore, has extended in some degree to all parts of the country and will probably become quite common. The story of this movement, as told by Dr. William Starr Myers in the accompanying manuscript, is both interesting and suggestive and should be known to all who are working for the betterment of the material conditions of schools for city children. I therefore recommend that this manuscript be published as a bulletin of this bureau and would call especial attention to the suggestions made by Dr. Myers as to the possibility of applying this principle to the public schools. It is quite easy to see how this might be done for the public high schools, at least of most cities, with little or no additional cost to the public for buildings, grounds, and equipment, or to indi vidual parents and children for transportation. It has frequently happened in the history of education in this and other countries that movements for the betterment of the public schools have begun in a small way with private schools as the result of the enthusiasm and earnestness of only a few individuals. It is sincerely hoped that this movement, begun at Baltimore in a private way and already extended to a dozen cities, may become a great national movement for the betterment of the public schools, in which the great masses of children are educated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Schools, and Other Institutions, Agencies, and Means Designed for the Professional Education of Teachers: Part I. United States and British Provinces; Part II. Europe The city of Philadelphia, whose system of public schools, made free by taxation on property, went into Operation only two years before Connecti cut passed a law exempting the people from the obligation of raising a tax on property for a portion of the expense of supporting common schools (thc most disastrous law ever placed on her statute book) - has now a system of public instruction from the Primary School for children four years of age, to the Normal School in which the female teachers of all her schools can be trained, maintained with a liberality, and embracing opportunities of an extended English, cltissical, and business education, which is free to all and practically enjoyed by the children of the rich and poor - of which we have no approach in any city of our State.
