Book excerpt: Plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as gibberellic acid (GA3), abscisic acid (ABA) and trinexapac-ethyl (TE) can be applied to turfgrasses to promote winter hardiness. Lethal temperature of 50% mortality measurements revealed that application of these PGRs had no effect on the acclimation status of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass for the months of January, February and March. Fall PGR application decreased acclimation status for annual bluegrass, whereas ABA and GA3 applications increased acclimation status for creeping bentgrass in April. Treatment with exogeneous ABA increased endogenous ABA levels in annual bluegrass. A simulated warming event in a growth chamber in late winter resulted in a loss of acclimation status for both grasses compared to a control. GA3 increased annual bluegrass photosynthesis and TE decreased creeping bentgrass photosynthesis during the warming event. PGRs are beneficial for maintaining the acclimation status of creeping bentgrass, while reducing the acclimation status of annual bluegrass.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As ultradwarf bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) putting green use in the United States moves further north, there is risk of sustaining winter injury from low-temperature exposure and tissue desiccation. Protective covers reduce low-temperature exposure on ultradwarf bermudagrass greens. Desiccation of turf can be caused by hydrophobic soils. Wetting agents are applied to actively growing ultradwarf bermudagrass greens to relieve symptoms of hydrophobic soils. Less is known about the effects late-fall wetting agent applications on dormant bermudagrass putting greens. This research aims to define a predicted low-temperature threshold for covering ultradwarf bermudagrass greens and to quantify the effects of a late-fall wetting agent application on winter survival of ultradwarf bermudagrass. A protective cover and wetting agent trial was conducted on a sand-based putting green with plots of 'Champion', 'MiniVerde', and 'TifEagle' ultradwarf bermudagrass during the winters if 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Cover treatments were placed at forecasted low-temperature thresholds of -9.4, -7.8, -5.6, and -4.0 °C and were compared to an uncovered control. A single late-fall wetting agent application was applied to each cultivar x cover treatment. An additional wetting agent trial was conducted by comparing a single application of various wetting agent treatments to an untreated control on a sand-based ultradwarf bermudagrass putting green. Spring green-up was monitored by quantifying green turfgrass coverage through digital image analysis. Soil volumetric water content was monitored at a depth of 3.8 cm using time-domain reflectometry. The wetting agent trial included two water drop penetration tests during each season. In both seasons, reducing the cover temperature threshold resulted in significant differences in green turfgrass coverage between treatments, but lower cover temperatures did not delay green-up of turf. 'MiniVerde' and 'TifEagle' greened up significantly faster compared to 'Champion'. In 2016, wetting agent treatments greened up significantly faster than the untreated control. Multiple wetting agent treatments significantly reduced water drop penetration times in the top three cm of the soil profile. Our research demonstrates the potential to reduce the forecasted low-temperature for covering ultradwarf bermudagrass without negatively impacting turf health, potentially reducing golf course winter labor costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by three of the top professionals in the turfgrass field, Managing Turfgrass Pests, Second Edition brings together hundreds of solutions and best practices to help you manage turfgrass weeds, diseases, and insects more effectively. Since the publication of the bestselling first edition, advances in pest-resistant turfgrass cultivars and pest control products have led to significant changes in the ways pests are managed. This revised and updated second edition reinforces those management tactics that are still relevant and covers new approaches that have been introduced since the first edition. The book discusses the concept of integrated pest management, incorporating cultural, biological, and chemical control measures. In particular, the authors emphasize the philosophy of minimizing pests through well-defined and well-implemented cultural systems. Rather than simply relying on a pesticide solution for control, they explain how to fine-tune cultural practices to better address the question of why the pest is present in the first place. Once these cultural practices are in place, any pesticide that is still required will be much more effective at controlling the pest. New in This Edition Revised and updated descriptions of economically important turfgrass pests Revised and updated cultural approaches to turfgrass pest management Revised and updated biological methods of turfgrass pest management Revised and updated chemical control of turfgrass pests More than 200 new color illustrations Packed with photographs, this full-color book provides updated information on best practices and control measures for turfgrass pest management. It also explains how to integrate various management strategies to ensure quality and functional turf. Throughout, the authors offer practical recommendations to help you optimize the competitiveness of your turfgrass against the pests that inevitably become part of any ecosystem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desiccating winters in the Northern Great Plains can lead to widespread turf death. This loss of turf results in poor aesthetics and can be financially burdensome. Financial implications include the cost of re-establishing turf and the loss of potential revenue from poor playing conditions in the spring which can both be devastating for financial success. The winter of 2013-2014 was particularly devastating, leaving many golf course superintendents re-evaluating their desiccation prevention management plans. There are many prevention practices available to turf managers that vary greatly in affordability, effectiveness, and labor. These prevention practices aim to prevent excessive water loss and keep plant tissue hydrated. Specifically, the survival of the turf crown, or growing point of the plant, is critical for rapid recovery in the spring. Desiccation prevention treatments include physical protection products such as protective covers and sand topdressing. Additionally, several spray-applied products have potential to reduce desiccation, including anti-transpirants, horticultural spray oils, turf colorants, and wetting agents. Current recommendations for winter desiccation prevention are based on anecdotal observations, rather than scientific explanation. The first objective of this study is to quantify the effectiveness of desiccation prevention treatments in terms of crown moisture content and spring recovery. A second objective is to evaluate commonly practiced re-establishment techniques which maximize turf re-establishment following winter desiccation to guide future recommendations. The results from this study indicate that protective covers and sand topdressing can sustain crown moisture content in desiccating environments, and these treatments often lead to more rapid spring recovery. Crown moisture contents observed in March ranged from as high 0.764 g H2O g-1 fresh weight from an impermeable cover treatment to as low as 0.251 g H2O g-1 fresh weight from the control treatment. Protective covers and sand topdressing consistently sustained crown moisture and recovered in the spring. Results from the winterkill recovery study showed that many of the practices which accelerate recovery may not be as effective as previously believed. Protective covers and aggressive fertilization did not maximize re-establishment in this study; these results may attributed to low solar radiation accumulation typical to the early spring and pre-existing nutrients sources providing adequate fertility.
