Book excerpt: Buzzfeed News,"15 Small Press Books To Kick Off Your 2020 Reading Season" The Millions, “February Preview: The Millions Most Anticipated” "Death looms in these four sparkling novellas—thus the book’s sly title—but until then there’s the wonder of life. Frank’s subjects include fascinating friendships and complicated marriages, awful parties and odd enthusiasm. Bonus: song mentions that add up to a terrifically eclectic playlist.” —Kim Hubbard, People Magazine In her quartet of novellas, Joan Frank invites readers into the inner lives of characters bewildered by love, grief, and inexplicable affinities. A young couple navigates a strange friendship and unexpected pregnancy; a woman recalls the bizarre fallout of her former lover's fame; a lonely widow is drawn to an arrogant young man; a wealthy spiritual seeker grapples with what wealth cannot affect. Witty and humane, Frank taps the riches of the novella form as she writes of loneliness, friendship, loss, and the filaments of intimacy that connect us through time.

Book excerpt: In The Reckoning, award-winning historian Jacob Soll shows how the use and misuse of financial bookkeeping has determined the fates of entire societies. Time and again, Soll reveals, good and honest accounting has been a tool to build successful companies, states and empires. Yet when it is neglected or falls into the wrong hands, accounting has contributed to cycles of destruction that continue to this day.

Book excerpt: Shakespeare Studies, edited by Leeds Barroll, a Scholar in Residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library, is an international volume published every year in hardcover, containing essays and studies by critics and cultural historians from both hemispheres. It includes substantial reviews of significant books and essays dealing with the cultural history of early modern England, as well as the place of Shakespeare's productions--and those of his contemporaries--within it. Volume XXXI presents a new feature, the first in an annual series of articles on "Early Modern Drama around the World." Specialists in each national drama being presented in other areas of the globe during the time of Shakespeare will discuss the state of scholarly study in each area. In this volume Grant Shen discusses late Ming drama in China, and Richard Pym writes on drama in Golden Age Spain. Full-length articles by Gustave Ungerer, Patricia Parker, Thomas Moisan, and Jennifer Lewin deal with The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Much Ado about Nothing, and Shakespeare's final plays. These are supplemented by review-articles by Raphael Falco and David Harris Sacks: "Is the Renaissance an Aesthetic Category?" and "Imagination in History." Volume XXXI also includes twenty-one reviews of books written by distinguished scholars on topics such as witchcraft, vagrancy, public devotion in early modern England, as well as on editions of the collected works of Elizabeth I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's intention is to treat, in a series of four or five romances, that part of the war for independence which particularly affected the great landed families of northern New York: the Johnsons, represented by Sir William, Sir John, Guy Johnson, and Colonel Claus; the notorious Butlers, father and son; the Schuylers, Van Rensselaers, and others. The first romance of the series, Cardigan, was followed by the second, The Maid-at-Arms. The third in order is not completed. The fourth is the present volume. As Cardigan pretended to portray life on the baronial estate of Sir William Johnson, the first uneasiness concerning the coming trouble, the first discordant note struck in the harmonious councils of the Long House, so, in The Maid-at-Arms, which followed in order, the author attempted to paint a patroon family disturbed by the approaching rumble of battle. That romance dealt with the first serious split in the Iroquois Confederacy; it showed the Long House shattered though not fallen; the demoralization and final flight of the great landed families who remained loyal to the British Crown; and it struck the key-note to the future attitude of the Iroquois toward the patriots of the frontier—revenge for their losses at the battle of Oriskany—and ended with the march of the militia and Continental troops on Saratoga. The third romance, as yet incomplete and unpublished, deals with the war-path and those who followed it, led by the landed gentry of Tryon County, and ends with the first solid blow delivered at the Long House, and the terrible punishment of the Great Confederacy. The present romance, the fourth in chronological order, picks up the thread at that point. The author is not conscious of having taken any liberties with history in preparing a framework of facts for a mantle of romance.

Book excerpt: Includes nine maps and one photo illustration Following World War II, the War Department Historical Division in 1946 published Small Unit Actions, the study of some discrete battles drawn from three different theaters of war...Nearly 20 years later, toward the end of American combat in Vietnam, the Office of the Chief of Military History again essayed to address small-unit actions with the publication of Seven Firefights in Vietnam. The present volume lies directly within the tradition of these predecessor works on small-unit actions. Since the fall of 2001, the U.S. Army, along with the other American armed services, has been engaged in military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Because the current conflict has so many different fronts and facets, no handful of small-unit case studies could do justice to such a complex tapestry of events. This book thus represents a volume that showcases the American soldier in combat operations within the context of the Global War on Terrorism/The Long War. This series of five case studies is drawn from events in Iraq. Four of the studies discuss combat operations within a counterinsurgency framework at the company and battalion levels. The final case study presents a deployment dilemma facing a brigade-level task force commander when he was asked to replace a whole division in the same geographical space. In each case, the story is derived from oral interviews and key documents and is fully annotated. The primary purpose for presenting these vignettes is to provide a vicarious education in what future participants will face as the War on Terrorism continues and beyond.
