Book excerpt: Manned and unmanned diving systems require underwater lights for illumination to illuminate search and work areas. Electric light bulbs can neither tolerate the temperature shock resulting from immersion in cold water nor the pressure exerted by water at operational depth. They must be protected by transparent enclosures capable of withstanding the sudden immersion in cold water and long-term compression by external hydrostatic pressure. Low thermal conductivity of plastics, impedes heat dissipation from the interior of the plastic enclosure to the water. Only enclosures fabricated from borosilicate or pure silica glass with very low temperature expansion coefficient can satisfy operational requirements. The low coefficient of thermal expansion, coupled with high heat transfer capability, allows enclosures from this group of glasses to operate successfully with a very high temperature differential across the wall thickness. These glasses also possess compressive strength exceeding 200,000 psi. This property allows such enclosures to be constructed with very thin walls, thus further improving the heat transfer from the inside of these enclosures to the cold water outside. Testing involved establishing the critical pressure and cyclic fatigue life of glass enclosures due to (1) the effect of enclosure shape, (2) type of bulkhead, (3) the configuration of mating surfaces, and (4) gasket material used. Three types of glass enclosures were investigated: cylindrical domes with conical flanges, pipes with conical flanges, and tubes without flanges.

Book excerpt: Up-to-date and thorough coverage of the causes, repercussions, and prevention of dust explosions and fires by one of the most well-respected environmental scientists and worker safety litigation specialists in the world This handy volume is a ready “go to” reference for the chemical engineer, plant manager, process engineer, or chemist working in industrial settings where dust explosions could be a concern, such as the process industries, coal industry, metal industry, and others. Though dust explosions have been around since the Earth first formed, and they have been studied and written about since the 1500s, they are still an ongoing concern and occur almost daily somewhere in the world, from bakeries to fertilizer plants. Dust explosions can have devastating consequences, and, recently, there have been new industrial standards and guidelines that reflect safer, more reasonable methods for dealing with materials to prevent dust explosions and resultant fires. This book not only presents these new developments for engineers and managers, it offers in-depth coverage of the subject, starting with a complete overview of dust—how it forms, when it is in danger of exploding, and how this risk can be mitigated—as well as a general overview of explosions and the environments that foster them. Dust Explosion and Fire Prevention Handbook covers individual industries, such as metal and coal; offers an appendix that outlines best practices for preventing dust explosions and fire and how these risks can be systematically mitigated by these implementations; and incorporates a handy glossary of terms for easy access, not only for the veteran engineer or chemist, but for the student or new hire. This ready reference is one of the most useful texts that an engineer or chemist could have at their side. With so many accidents still occurring in industry today, this must-have volume pinpoints the most common, sure-fire ways for engineers, scientists, and chemists working with these hazardous materials to go about their daily business safely, efficiently, and profitably, with no extraneous tables or theoretical treatises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of hazardous areas containing explosive gases, vapors, and combustible dust. It also discusses about the different types of protection techniques used in explosion-proof electrical equipment. This book further provides guidance on how to deal with electrical explosions caused by fires due to arcs and sparks caused by a failure in the design, manufacture, selection, installation, or maintenance of electrical equipment. Among the topics covered in this book are overview of hazardous areas, various types of protection available, mechanisms for explosion pressure to build inside flameproof enclosures, concept of preventing explosions in flammable and dusty environments, unique features of explosion-proof motors, process of testing and certifying explosion-proof equipment in India and abroad, and mechanisms for the initiation and prevention of explosions resulting from non-electric sources. The book also discusses topics such as the selection, installation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical equipment. In addition, this book will be useful for researchers and professionals working in the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, mining engineering, and testing laboratories that test and certify explosion-proof equipment.
