One is the International Congress on "MHD Power Generation", held every four years, which includes technical and economical aspects as well as scientific questions. The other if the Beer-Sheva Seminar on "MHO Flows and Turbulence", held every three years in Israel. In addition to these well established meetings, an IUTAM Symposium was previously organized in Cambridge (UK) in 1982 on "Metallurgical Applications of MHD" by the late Arthur Shercliff. It was focussed on a very specific subject developing radiply from the middle of the 1970's. The magnetic field was generally AC, including frequencies high enough for the skin-depth to be much smaller than the typical length scale of the liquide pool. And the development of new technologies, or the improvement of existing ones, was the main justification of most of the researches presented and discussed. Only two participants from Eastern countries attended this Symposium. By the middle of the 1980's we felt that on this very same topic ideas had reached much more maturity than in 1982. We also realized that a line of research on MHD flows related to fusion reactors (tokamaks) was developing significantly, with particular emphasis on flows at large interaction parameter.

Experimental results covering a wide speed range up to choking are presented for three flow geometries of a lateral branch off a straight duct using dry air as the working fluid. A new theoretical flow model provided results in fairly good agreement with the experimental data obtained. Flow visualization of the high-speed flow using the Schlieren method revealed the presence of normal shock waves in the combined flow about one duct diameter downstream of the junction. The highest attainable Mach number (M3) of the averaged downstream (combined) flow was 0.66 for several of the flow geometries. This value of M3 appears to be the maximum possible and is the result of a combination of flow separation and local flow choking.

Book excerpt: Pipe Flow provides the information required to design and analyze the piping systems needed to support a broad range of industrial operations, distribution systems, and power plants. Throughout the book, the authors demonstrate how to accurately predict and manage pressure loss while working with a variety of piping systems and piping components. The book draws together and reviews the growing body of experimental and theoretical research, including important loss coefficient data for a wide selection of piping components. Experimental test data and published formulas are examined, integrated and organized into broadly applicable equations. The results are also presented in straightforward tables and diagrams. Sample problems and their solution are provided throughout the book, demonstrating how core concepts are applied in practice. In addition, references and further reading sections enable the readers to explore all the topics in greater depth. With its clear explanations, Pipe Flow is recommended as a textbook for engineering students and as a reference for professional engineers who need to design, operate, and troubleshoot piping systems. The book employs the English gravitational system as well as the International System (or SI).

Book excerpt: "ESDU 81039 provides basic data for use in the calculation of pressure losses for incompressible flow (generally liquid flow) in ducts containing orifice plates, perforated plates and thick orifice plates or in the determination of a suitable geometry for a pressure reducing orifice in a duct. Data are given for porosities in the range 0.001 to 1.00; although the data were derived basically for symmetrical arrangements of circular holes in circular plates they were found to apply reasonably well for square ducts, square holes and small departures from symmetry. General features of flow through orifices are discussed. A flowchart calculation procedure is included. Compressible flow is dealt with in ESDU 82009."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the effects of compression on pressure drops in non-metallic flexible duct. Duct sizes of 12", 14" and 16" diameters were tested at a five different compression ratios (maximum stretch, 4%, 15%, 30% and 45%) following the draw through methodology in ASHRAE Standard 120 -1999 -- Methods of Testing to Determine Flow Resistance of Air Ducts and Fittings. With the pressure drop data gathered, equations were developed to approximate the pressure loss at a given air flow rate for a given duct size. The data gathered showed general agreement with previous studies showing an increase in compression ratio leads to an increase in static pressure loss through the duct. It was determined that pressure losses for compression ratios greater than 4% were over four times greater than maximum stretched flexible duct of corresponding duct size. The increased static pressure losses can lead to decreased performance in HVAC systems. The findings of this study add to the existing ASHRAE and industry data for flexible duct with varying compression ratios. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents several new findings in the field of turbulent duct flows, which are important for a range of industrial applications. It presents both high-quality experiments and cutting-edge numerical simulations, providing a level of insight and rigour rarely found in PhD theses. The scientific advancements concern the effect of the Earth’s rotation on large duct flows, the experimental confirmation of marginal turbulence in a pressure-driven square duct flow (previously only predicted in simulations), the identification of similar marginal turbulence in wall-driven flows using simulations (for the first time by any means) and, on a separate but related topic, a comprehensive experimental study on the phenomenon of drag reduction via polymer additives in turbulent duct flows. In turn, the work on drag reduction resulted in a correlation that provides a quantitative prediction of drag reduction based on a single, measurable material property of the polymer solution, regardless of the flow geometry or concentration. The first correlation of its kind, it represents an important advancement from both a scientific and practical perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airflow pressure losses through rigid metallic and non-metallic flexible ducts were studied and recommendations to improve the rating of flexible ducts were made as part of this study. The testing was done in compliance with ASHRAE Standard 120-1999, Methods of Testing to Determine Flow Resistance of HVAC Air Ducts and Fittings (ASHRAE 1999). Duct sizes of 6", 8", and 10" were tested in a positive pressure, blow-through configuration. An As-Built Test Protocol expands the test configurations specified by Standard 120-1999. Results of the current tests extend the existing ASHRAE/ACCA data for flexible duct which does not include pressure loss data for flexible ducts that are compressed beyond approximately 4%. The data from this study exhibit higher pressure drops than prior ACCA or ASHRAE data. Some configurations exhibit over ten times the pressure loss found in rigid duct or fully stretched flexible duct of the same diameter.
