Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental distress is not exclusive to any particular group but touches the lives of people in all societies and walks of life; one in four of us will be affected by it in our lifetime. Yet the field of mental health is complex – fraught with differences in understanding and experience, variations in service provision, political agendas and professional discourses. This wide-ranging book explores a range of themes in the development of mental health policy and practice, in order to promote critical reflection and enhance understanding. Drawing on an international evidence base, it explores the historical, legal and socio-cultural dimensions of mental health, including: - Anti-discriminatory practice and the ethical tensions posed by legislation, particularly in relation to safeguarding and human rights - Trends and concerns in the field of child and adolescent mental health - The gender, ethnicity and age-related dimensions of mental ill-health - The challenges posed by dual diagnosis and faced by families and carers International Perspectives on Mental Health offers a multi-dimensional view of mental health and wellbeing, with the aim of opening up debate and inviting a more holistic conception of the field. It is required reading for students of mental health on professional and academic courses, as well as for practitioners in the health and social care field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, policymakers in England and Wales advanced controversial proposals for the preventive detention of a group they termed 'dangerous people with severe personality disorders'. Against a background of uncertain scientific knowledge, legal and policy actors have long faced challenges in reconciling the need to prevent crime with the need to respect the rights of the 'dangerous'. Ailbhe O'Loughlin's book, Law and Personality Disorder, situates contemporary debates about 'dangerous' offenders within this decades-old battle between the proponents of liberal legal principles and advocates of social defence. Law and Personality Disorder deconstructs competing images of offenders with personality disorders and the dilemmas they present, combining insights from criminology, psychiatry, psychology, and law. The book thus critically engages with an alluring narrative: the state has a duty to protect the public from 'dangerous' individuals, but it can also protect the human rights of the 'dangerous' by providing them with rehabilitation opportunities. While human rights law is often invoked as a means of curbing the excesses of preventive justice, O'Loughlin demonstrates that the case law of the European Court of Human Rights tends to legitimise coercive measures. Criminal law, furthermore, enables the punishment of offenders with mental disorders by resisting psychiatric evidence that they may not be fully responsible for their actions. Examining gaps in sentencing law, mental health law, and human rights law, this innovative book offers readers a comprehensive interpretation of the laws governing offenders with personality disorders and puts forward proposals for reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Code of Practice is a reference tool for those dealing with, and caring for people admitted to hospital and care homes with mental health problems. Authored by the Department of Health and produced following wide consultation with those who provide and receive services under the Mental Health Act, this publication will come into force on 3 November 2008. Through the Mental Health Act 2007, the Government has updated the 1983 Act to ensure it keeps pace with the changes in the way that mental health services are - and need to be - delivered. This publication provides guidance and advice to registered medical practitioners, approved clinicians, managers and staff of hospitals, and approved mental health professionals on how they should proceed when undertaking duties under the Act. It also gives guidance to doctors and other professionals about certain aspects of medical treatment for mental disorder more generally. The Mental Health Act Code of Practice is also aimed at all of those working in primary care, Mental Health Trusts, NHS Foundation Trusts as well as solicitors and attorneys who advise on mental health law. The Code should also be beneficial to the police and ambulance services and others in health and social services (including the independent and voluntary sectors) involved in providing services to people who are, or may become, subject to compulsory measures under the Act. It will also be a guide for those working with people with specific mental health needs such as those in nursing and care homes, and those in prison.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines policies on unpaid care throughout the UK since the 1990 NHS and Community Care Act. It questions why, after decades of policies and strategies, unpaid care remains in a marginal position in the social care system and in society more broadly, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides critical analysis of key policies and professional practice over three decades and highlights the continuing challenges faced by people in caring relationships, as well as reflecting on developments in the position of unpaid carers in the system of social care. By questioning why this crucially important sphere of human life remains under-resourced, it sheds light on the ways in which care is understood and how policy makers and service providers perceive the need for support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mind, State and Society examines the reforms in psychiatry and mental health services in Britain during 1960–2010, when de-institutionalisation and community care coincided with the increasing dominance of ideologies of social liberalism, identity politics and neoliberal economics. Featuring contributions from leading academics, policymakers, mental health clinicians, service users and carers, it offers a rich and integrated picture of mental health, covering experiences from children to older people; employment to homelessness; women to LGBTQ+; refugees to black and minority ethnic groups; and faith communities and the military. It asks important questions such as: what happened to peoples' mental health? What was it like to receive mental health services? And how was it to work in or lead clinical care? Seeking answers to questions within the broader social-political context, this book considers the implications for modern society and future policy. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book excerpt: This book offers guidance for speech and language therapists and other professionals who are working in a criminal justice setting or who are interested to know more about this dynamic and rewarding client group. The criminal justice system (CJS) includes police custody, community services, secure hospitals and prisons. Although each setting has its differences, there are overarching areas associated with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) within the population who find themselves coming into contact with the CJS. These needs are many and varied: from social deprivation and developmental language disorder, to head injury, substance misuse and ADHD. The variety is both stimulating and challenging, and this book provides the reader with a range of resources to use with such a complex client base. Key features include: academic evidence about SLCN in the CJS accessible visuals explaining the systems pathways resources to support assessment and intervention information to support individuals with a range of overlapping needs. Aimed primarily at speech and language therapists, the book also includes useful content for students, academics and professionals who wish to know more about SLCN within the CJS. As well as being full of useful infographics, this book includes a vast appendix of online material that can be downloaded and printed for use in practice.
