The Prime Minister’s Office called the book a work of ‘fiction’, the press hailed it as a revelatory account of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s first term in UPA. Written by Singh’s media adviser and trusted aide, the book describes Singh’s often troubled relations with his ministers, his cautious equation with Sonia Gandhi and how he handled the big crises from managing the Left to pushing through the nuclear deal. Insightful, acute and packed with political anecdotes, The Accidental Prime Minister is one of the great insider accounts of Indian political life.

Book excerpt: Herald it as the coming of age of woman power or shrug it off as mere symbolism to placate all and sundry - the fact is that the glass ceiling at the highest level has been shattered. Even so, with the passage of time the novelty of having a woman President is bound to wear off, and the sole benchmark to evaluate Pratibha Patil would be her performance as the first citizen of the country. A seasoned politician and proven Congress loyalist, Pratibha Patil has the unique distinction of having won every election that she has contested in the 34 years of her long political career. Till recently Governor of Rajasthan, she will need to muster all the skills honed in the rough and tumble of politics, in the professional arena of the courtroom, and in sports stadia to uphold the dignity and decorum of the hallowed office of the President of the country. This book traces the journey of President Pratibha Patil from the small town of Jalgaon to the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan on Raisina Hill as she assumes office as the twelfth President of India, after one of the murkiest, no-holds barred presidential elections ever, making history in the sixtieth year of India's independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of how a popularly elected leader has steered the world's largest democracy toward authoritarianism and intolerance Over the past two decades, thanks to Narendra Modi, Hindu nationalism has been coupled with a form of national-populism that has ensured its success at the polls, first in Gujarat and then in India at large. Modi managed to seduce a substantial number of citizens by promising them development and polarizing the electorate along ethno-religious lines. Both facets of this national-populism found expression in a highly personalized political style as Modi related directly to the voters through all kinds of channels of communication in order to saturate the public space. Drawing on original interviews conducted across India, Christophe Jaffrelot shows how Modi's government has moved India toward a new form of democracy, an ethnic democracy that equates the majoritarian community with the nation and relegates Muslims and Christians to second-class citizens who are harassed by vigilante groups. He discusses how the promotion of Hindu nationalism has resulted in attacks against secularists, intellectuals, universities, and NGOs. Jaffrelot explains how the political system of India has acquired authoritarian features for other reasons, too. Eager to govern not only in New Delhi, but also in the states, the government has centralized power at the expense of federalism and undermined institutions that were part of the checks and balances, including India's Supreme Court. Modi's India is a sobering account of how a once-vibrant democracy can go wrong when a government backed by popular consent suppresses dissent while growing increasingly intolerant of ethnic and religious minorities.

Book excerpt: When framers of the American Constitution debated the document (and form of government) in 1787, they chose not to adopt the British system as they knew its flaws. In 230 years, USA has grown beyond what the framers could have envisioned, but the Constitution has endured. The American President has far less powers than the British PM. British PM William Evert Gladstone had said: “Nowhere is there a man who has so much power with so little to show for it in the way of formal title or prerogative.” British historian Sir Sidney JM Low wrote in 1904: “An English Prime Minister, with his majority secure in parliament, can do what the German Emperor, the American President, and all the Chairmen of all the Committees of the United States’ Congress, cannot do (together).” India was already the world’s largest democracy on August 15, 1947, but, for almost 2½ years, we followed the British Constitution. The 6-member Constitution Drafting Committee, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as Chairman, prepared a draft Constitution. This was debated and 2000+ amendments were moved over two years. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. The committee had several choices in which model to follow. In 1947, USA’s population was about 44% of India, but we still chose to adopt a system from a country which was just 15% our size. ALL BECAUSE OF ONE MAN WHO HAD VERY CAREFULLY READ SIR LOW’S WORDS AND WANTED THAT ABSOLUTE POWER FOR HIMSELF. Has the parliamentary form of government worked for us over the past 68 years?

"I am happy to find in your book such well documented and argued support for a proposal which I have advocated for many years." Shri J. R. D. Tata Eminent Industrialist "My own personal opinion that a success of any system, be it parliamentary or presidential, ultimately depends on the people who will operate it, has changed after having read your book...Your book is bound to contribute a great deal in moulding the public opinion in this regard." Shri Babubhai Patel Ex-Chief Minister of Gujarat "I really enjoyed the discussion we had on your views… and analysis of the Presidential System. Frankly, after listening to your meticulous analysis of the comparative merits, I must say I am veering around to your view... I am convinced that your objective is a pure one and is not aimed at pursuit of any political gains but to the promotion of a nationalist ideology. I am pleasantly amazed that our country still has persons like you. You have no personal ambitions in the matter. It is indeed gratifying that a highly qualified Engineer and Technologist like you should be taking such great interest in promoting a larger national cause. You have taken up this agenda of political reforms with no other expectation than good of the country at large." Shri M. N. Venkatachaliah Former Chief Justice of India and Chairman, Constitutional Reforms Committee, Govt. of India, 2002 "Your lifetime of work for the cause of bringing the presidential system to India is an important contribution to the future of our country. You have given this mission your best for a very long time. I am touched and encouraged… Please don't give up hope… You are (a) source of inspiration..." Book excerpt: 'Well written, solidly researched and cogently argued' --Shashi Tharoor 'Bhanu has ably argued the case' --Kuldip Nayar 'This timely book... looks at the many advantages of the presidential system.' --Shanta Kumar At one time or another, Dr Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, M.A. Jinnah, Sardar Patel and many other top leaders strongly opposed India's adoption of the parliamentary system. History has proven them right. Given its diversity, size, and communal and community divisions, the country needed a truly federal setup -- not the centralized unitary control that the parliamentary system offers. Why India Needs the Presidential System tells the dramatic story of how India's current system of government evolved, how it is at the root of the problems India faces. The result of years of meticulous research, this book makes a passionate plea for a radical rethink of India's future as a nation. Why India Needs the Presidential System is not just an expose of what is wrong, but a serious effort at offering a possible solution.
