Download or read book Exploiting Hope written by Jeremy Snyder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear stories of people in terrible and seemingly intractable situations who are preyed upon by someone offering promises of help. Frequently these cases are condemned in terms of "exploiting hope." These accusations are made in a range of contexts: human smuggling, employment relationships, unproven medical 'cures.' We hear this concept so often and in so many contexts that, with all its heavy lifting in public discourse, its actual meaning tends to lose focus. Despite its common use, it can be hard to understand precisely what is wrong about exploiting hope what can accurately be captured under this concept, and what should be done. In this book, philosopher Jeremy Snyder offers an in-depth study of hope's exploitation. First, he examines the concept in the abstract, including a close look at how this term is used in the popular press and analysis of the concepts of exploitation and hope. This theory-based section culminates in a definitive account of what it is to exploit hope, and when and why doing so is morally problematic. The second section of the book examines the particularly dangerous cases in which unproven medical interventions target the most vulnerable: for example, participants in clinical trials, purchasing unproven stem cell interventions, "right to try" legislation, and crowdfunding for unproven medical interventions. This book is essential reading for ethical theorists, policymakers, and health researchers, on a topic of growing visibility and importance.
Book Synopsis Hope: A Literary History by : Adam Potkay
Download or read book Hope: A Literary History written by Adam Potkay and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope for us has a positive connotation. Yet it was criticized in classical antiquity as a distraction from the present moment, as the occasion for irrational and self-destructive thinking, and as a presumption against the gods. To what extent do arguments against hope today remain useful? If hope sounds to us like a good thing, that reaction stems from a progressive political tradition grounded in the French Revolution, aspects of Romantic literature and the influence of the Abrahamic faiths. Ranging both wide and deep, Adam Potkay examines the cases for and against hope found in literature from antiquity to the present. Drawing imaginatively on several fields and creatively juxtaposing poetry, drama, and novels alongside philosophy, theology and political theory, the author brings continually fresh insights to a subject of perennial interest. This is a bold and illuminating new treatment of a long-running literary debate as complex as it is compelling.
Book Synopsis Dancing between Hope and Despair by : Sue Wright
Download or read book Dancing between Hope and Despair written by Sue Wright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is hope so fundamental to our existence? Hope is increasingly being acknowledged as an important factor both for people's resilience and for positive therapeutic outcomes. In considering this and many other questions, this evocative textbook introduces the reader to the repeated shifting, or 'dance', between hope and despair that is so often encountered by practitioners working with profoundly traumatised individuals. This book brings a sharp focus to the ways in which therapeutic relationships can draw individuals out of the constant oscillation between light and dark. It provides an insightful and thoughtful discussion not just about despair itself, but about how to be with despair. Informed by the author's own years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, this engaging and stimulating book provides practical guidance on how students, trainees and practitioners can inspire fresh hope in deeply troubled clients.
Book Synopsis The Hope Deficit! by : Rev: James Morris ACS. Bch. M
Download or read book The Hope Deficit! written by Rev: James Morris ACS. Bch. M and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refocus your attention on sharing God’s message with the world with the inspiring guidance in The Hope Deficit! In this book, the author proclaims that Jesus Christ, the son of God, is the only hope that is everlasting. He also explains the difference between true hope and false hope, revealing that hope is the very person of Christ residing within the disciple by faith. He also observes that the metamorphosis of evil continues to baffle the naïve. Humanity’s cry for hope is growing ever louder – but hope outside of Christ does not exist. The author considers questions such as: • How does trusting in the Lord and His holy word inspire hope? • Why does every human being need hope so much? • How can we find peace and rest? We must choose wisely who we believe and what we trust. Just as man’s choice to be gods knowing good and evil brought us this hopeless world of sin, death, and pain, man must now choose to believe that Jesus Christ God is the only way for mankind to be saved.

It will also appeal to arts educators, community artists, sociologists, cultural workers and teacher training faculty and in service-learning and other pedagogy-related courses.
Book Synopsis Creation and Hope by : Nicola Hoggard Creegan
Download or read book Creation and Hope written by Nicola Hoggard Creegan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an ecological age. Science in the last few hundred years has given us a picture of nature as blind to the future and mechanical in its workings, even while ecology and physics have made us aware of our interconnectedness and dependency upon the web of life. As we witness a possible sixth great mass-extinction, there is increasing awareness too of the fragility of life on this planet. In such a context, what is the nature of Christian hope? St Paul declares that all of creation "will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God." How are we to imagine this "freedom" when death and decay are essential to biological life as we currently experience it, and when the scientific predictions for life are bleak at best? This book explores these questions, reflecting on how our traditions shape our imagination of the future, and considering how a theology of hope may sustain Christians engaged in conservation initiatives. The essays in this volume are partly in dialogue with the ground-breaking work of Celia Deane-Drummond, and are set in the context of global and local (Aotearoa New Zealand) ecological challenges.
