Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ride on a steam train is a popular family outing. More than 100 heritage railways cater for that demand, capturing the spirit of nostalgia while preserving the engines and equipment of past days of rail travel. Their interests even extend to the modern era of 1960's - 70's diesels. Those heritage railways themselves have a long pedigree, back to 1951, when a group of enthusiasts saved the Talyllyn Railway in mid-Wales from closure. They ran this railway as volunteers, out of their love of the little trains and a desire to keep it going. Their example was followed by many more preservation societies who preserved and restored branch lines, country lines and industrial lines for our enjoyment now.Six decades have passed, and we are now beginning to realize what an impressive history the heritage railway movement has. This book traces that history, from the humble beginnings the hopes and ambitions of the pioneers on the different railway projects. There were times of failure and frustration, as some fell by the wayside, but others have made it through times of adversity to become the major heritage businesses of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over fifty years since the main line steam revival began in October 1971 with the return to steam by 6000 King George V, thanks to the efforts of Peter Prior and the help from the British Railways Board. This is not the whole story, in that the preservation movement was developing and beginning to mature, as more preserved railways opened throughout the Country. These developments took place fifty years ago, and subsequently, are forming their own history. The period covered in this book reflects on times when main line steam travel and preserved railways developed and matured into the steam operations we experienced as we entered the twenty first century. This book contains color images from the author's collection of large format slides, using over 200 pictures with informative captions to describe the scenes depicted, in chronological order. The enormous work of volunteers in developing the preservation movement cannot be underestimated, because without those efforts, there would be no history to record. This is a salute to the volunteer movement.

Book excerpt: Railway Man begins with author Mitchell Deaver paying a nostalgic visit to Bickle signal box, base of boyhood adventures described in his first book Railway Boy. Shortly after, he leaves rural Yorkshire for life in the big cities. It is 1968. Railway Man describes the emotionally devastating draw-down of steam traction on British Railways. Three steam sheds remain: Carnforth, Lostock Hall and Rose Grove. The end comes when the last steam train runs on 11th August. The total steam ban is unbearable. Mitchell Deaver's brainchild, the Return to Steam Committee, tries to get steam back on British Railways. In 1980 Mitchell Deaver achieves a boyhood dream and becomes a signalman on the busy North London Line. Railway Man describes the realities of operating a mechanical signal box, one that is open continuously. Life as a signalman is not without incident. A mischievous letter prompts a visit from senior management. Signal box operations degenerate into a scene from the Marx Brothers. A signalmen's night out turns into a baffling conspiracy. In this true story set in the cities of Birmingham, Liverpool and London and spanning two decades, Railway Man describes a monumental battle between, on one side, Mitchell Deaver's love of railways and, on the other, forces that try to draw him elsewhere. Which side wins?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-nineteenth century the East Coast Main Line has been one of the major routes from London to northern England and to Scotland. It has seen some of the greatest achievements in the railways, most notably the 'Flying Scotsman' becoming, in 1934, the first locomotive in the world to exceed 100mph and the 'Mallard' in 1938 claiming the as-yet-unbroken world speed record for steam locomotives of 126mph. The East Coast Main Line not only made history by facilitating an ever-faster link between two capital cities, it also provided an international stage for Britain's engineering marvels, inspiring many generations of schoolboys and adults alike. That was to continue after the end of the steam era on British Railways, with diesel and then electric traction setting a series of new records over the route. This new book looks at how the London-Edinburgh line became the world's fastest steam railway and how its proud and unique heritage is appreciated and celebrated today more than ever before. Superbly illustrated with over 300 colour and black & white photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating tale of a young school boy's exploits in his quest to spot every steam locomotive in the UK during the 1950s & 1960s, until steam finished on British Railways on 4th August 1968. at the time I lived in North Hertfordshire, so my trainspotting days began mainly at Hitchin on the ECML. I later moved to Guildford and carried on from there. I was fortunate in that I recorded virtually all my activities and furthermore have retained those records to this day. In those days before computers and mobile phones Trainspotting was one of the most popular hobbies in the country. My travels covered virtually the whole of the UK over a 10 year period. During that time along with my friends we had lots of interesting and sometimes amusing incidents; such as the Castleford 'Snow' occurrence; contretemps with a herd of Bullocks; run-ins with the law and shed foremen; sleeping rough on many occasions; a scary walk over Crumlin viaduct; our coach catching fire on the M1; plus many more. we visited locomotive sheds over 600 times during which I recorded in excess of 21,000 engines! We travelled by any means available; coach; bus; mini-bus; bicycle; car; motorbike; train; ferry; and a lot of hitchhiking! The latter including one such ride on a 9F which took me right into the shed I was about to bunk! We would take every opportunity to be by our beloved steam engines, daily on the way to & from school, then again in the evenings and every 2-3 weeks off an a tour somewhere in the UK some of these lasted 4 -5 days, often with rather dubious overnight accommodation! these tours were to all parts of the UK, from South Wales to Aberdeen, the Northwest, Northeast, Midlands, North Wales, south to Brighton, Southampton, Isle of Wight, West country and dozens of other locations The book has full colour card covers, is A4 portrait style of 185 pages and over 100 B & W photos. At the end of the text are two appendices, the first lists every shed visited and the relevant dates, the second lists in chronological order every locomotive seen, its shed and date. Barrie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this second book in the Transport Philately series on public transport issues featured on postage stamps, once again the author will combine two of his lifelong hobbies as he looks at railways around the world on standard gauge tracks that encompasses the majority of the western worlds major railway arteries. The book will also illustrate railways on other, similar gauges of track where they constitute a country's major arteries, but it is not an exhaustive survey encompassing every country and every issue for that one needs to refer to major catalog issues by such well-known authorities as Stanley Gibbons Plc.There have been many and varied reasons why postal authorities have issued stamps featuring railway subjects, varying from major anniversaries to national pride, the latter often from the former Eastern-bloc countries but that is not by all means. The Royal Mail in the UK has certainly not ignored railways, especially in later years, and the author will visit probably more of his native country's stamps than most other countries', but he's biased. The author often looks in his albums to try to understand why a particular country will sometimes be represented by bulging sections, while others are represented by but one or two stamps. And so, the book follows the story around the world in roughly an eastern journey, learning about some of the national histories on the way and admiring the attentions of some extremely accomplished artists that mean philatelists and rail-lovers alike can enjoy many beautiful miniature works of art.
