Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preservation of Fishing Nets The cotton and hemp of which nets, lines, and ropes are made consist of vegetable fibres, which, however strong they may be when new, become weakened by use and by exposure to air and water. They may lose their original strength in two ways - mechanically by wear and tear, chemically by rotting or decomposition, and unless means are taken to prevent it, the conditions to which the materials are exposed in fishing operations will cause them to become rotten long before they would be worn out mechanically. The rotting, or decomposing processes which take place in the materials of fishing gear, as in other vegetable and animal substances, are produced by the action of minute living particles of the nature of moulds, yeasts, or bacteria. Download or read book Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen. This book explores technological considerations of small-scale, primitive fishing technologies, and describes innovative, relatively inexpensive methods and tools that have already been successfully applied in developing countries. It offers practical information about all aspects of small-scale fishing, including boat design and construction, fishing methods and gear, artificial reef construction and fish aggregating devices, techniques for coastal mariculture, and simple methods for processing and preserving fish once they are caught. Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries is illustrated throughout with photographs of the devices and construction methods described in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of environmental conditions and the high temperature, organic and bacterial content of waters and strong sunlight of the tropics, fishing nets and associated gear deteriorate more rapidly. A literature review uncovered only one paper dealing specifically with gear-preservation methods used by Filipino fishermen. The Philippine Fishery Program of the Fish and Wildlife Service cared out some experiments for gear preservation that are presented with the hope that the results will be helpful to Filipino fishermen as well as to the fishing industry in general.
