Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Wood preservatives are generally grouped into two categories: preservatives used for in-place field (remedial)treatment and preservatives used for pressure treatments.A limitation of in-place treatments is that they cannot beforced deeply into the wood under pressure. However, theycan be applied into the center of large wooden membersvia treatment holes. These preservatives may be availableas liquids, rods, or pastes. Pressure-treated wood has muchdeeper and more uniform preservative penetration thanwood treated with other methods. The type of pressuretreated wood is often dependent on the requirements of thespecific application. To guide selection of pressure-treatedwood, the American Wood Protection Association developedUse Category System standards. Other preservative characteristics, such as color, odor, and surface oiliness may alsobe relevant. Guidelines for selection and application of fieldtreatments and for selection and specification of pressure-treated wood are provided in this document. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability and Historic Preservation: Towards a Holistic View broadens the horizons of the mushrooming drive to correlate the objectives of these two spheres. To date, discussions of the relationship between historic preservation and sustainability have generally focused on the energy consumption of buildings. The nine chapters in this book show how that agenda can and should be expanded by examining many other facets of the environment, including agricultural lands, urban waterworks, irrigation systems, natural settings, an arboretum, and post-World War II suburbs. Written by specialists from a variety of disciplines—anthropology, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban history among them—the contents explore new realms in which historic preservation and sustainability can have common purpose. This book addresses subjects of concern to many persons engaged in both fields and argues the case for creating a greater spectrum of common ground between them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural landscapes, which in the field of heritage studies and practice relates to caring for and safeguarding heritage landscapes, is a concept embedded in contemporary conservation. Heritage conservation has shifted from an historical focus on buildings, city centres, and archaeological sites to encompass progressively more diverse forms of heritage and increasingly larger geographic areas, embracing both rural and urban landscapes. While the origin of the idea of cultural landscapes can be traced to the late-19th century Euro-American scholarship, it came to global attention after 1992 following its adoption as a category of ‘site’ by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Today, cultural landscape practice has become increasingly complex given the expansion of the values and meanings of heritage, the influence of environmental challenges such as human induced climate change, technological advancements, and the need to better understand and interpret human connections to place and landscapes. The aim of this handbook is to strike a balance between theory and practice, which we see as inseparable, while also seeking to achieve a geographical spread, disciplinary diversity and perspectives, and a mix of authors from academic, practitioner, management, and community backgrounds.
