Book Synopsis Reviews and Essays of Austin Clarke by : Austin Clarke
Download or read book Reviews and Essays of Austin Clarke written by Austin Clarke and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1995 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austin Clarke is widely regarded as one of 20th-century Ireland's most important poets. In this selection of nearly fifty essays and reviews written over Clarke's long career, he demonstrates that he is an astute and provocative literary critic as well. Having grown up in Dublin when the excitement of the Irish Literary Revival was still running high, Clarke knew many of the principal figures of that movement personally, and his readings of Yeats, Joyce, Synge, O'Casey, Lady Gregory, George Moore, and others enjoy the advantages of an insider's point of view. A selection of Clarke's writings on Yeats is followed by his writings on other Irish writers and the Irish Literary Revival, and on Modern English and American literature. Included as an appendix is an exhaustive list of Clarke's literary criticism published in periodicals.

Book Synopsis Welsh Poetry Old and New, in English Verse (Classic Reprint) by : Alfred Perceval Graves
Download or read book Welsh Poetry Old and New, in English Verse (Classic Reprint) written by Alfred Perceval Graves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poetry Old and New, in English Verse Mr. Graves's translations cannot fail to give pleasure to those to whom his originals are familiar, but should be welcomed no less by the larger body of readers to whom Welsh poetry is accessible only by the road of translation. Wales boasts of her early poets, and claims for her later singers a share of the divine fire and a considerable proficiency in literary workmanship. The translator's work would be justified if he merely helped his readers to a fair judgment as to how far these claims are justified. Whether Mr. Graves has not achieved more and produced work that deserves to take its place in the fine company of English lyrics, I leave it to more competent critics to say. He has for the most part stuck closely to his originals, but it is not difficult, I think, to trace the hand of the poet, in spite of the shackles of the translator. Book Synopsis English-language Poetry from Wales 1789-1806 by : Elizabeth Edwards
Download or read book English-language Poetry from Wales 1789-1806 written by Elizabeth Edwards and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period following the French revolution in 1789, Welsh poets continually reflected on the extraordinary new era in which they lived through their writing. Effortlessly ranging from Wales’s deep and distant history to accounts of the most topical and urgent current affairs, their poems on war, Welshness, druids, parted lovers and sublime landscapes encompass the beautiful, the brutal and the mysterious. Facing a future that often seemed agonisingly uncertain, poets in Wales used their verses to voice their thoughts and feelings about events that had rocked the whole of Europe, and whose effects continued to be felt long after 1789. This new selection of poetry from Wales sets recently-discovered manuscript texts alongside little-known early printed poems, offering a full and accessible introduction to Welsh poetry in English in the period 1780-1820.
Book Synopsis A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty-four Modern Anglo-Welsh Writers by : John Harris
Download or read book A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty-four Modern Anglo-Welsh Writers written by John Harris and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most detailed guide in existence to a significant portion of the now extensive English-language literature of Wales. Two dozen major writers, who are generally associated with the Anglo-Welsh literary renaissance, are covered here. Some, like Dylan Thomas, are internationally known figures who have been the subject of bibliographies: in these cases the treatment here is the most up-to-date and comprehensive yet published. Others, less well-known outside Wales, are given full bibliographical treatment for the first time. The volume will therefore be indispensable to students and teachers of literature in English at all levels. The bibliography lists publications by and about each chosen writer. Primary sections record the writer's monographic output - in all editions and translations - as well as uncollected contributions to books, periodicals and newspapers. Secondary lists include critical and biographical studies of each writer: independent monographs, sections of books, periodical essays and academic theses. Two important sections preface the individual author bibliographies, one covering anthologies of Anglo-Welsh poetry and prose, the other a range of general critical and background studies. In all, this bibliography, with close on 6,000 selectively annotated entries, provides an indispensable reference guide to a developing area of literary and cultural research.
