Book excerpt: An extensive index will make this book of humor one of the most useful resources in your library. All of the key words in every story are in the index. The preacher, teacher or public speaker will have no difficulty finding the exact bit of humor needed to bring sparkle to a sermon, speech, lesson or monthly bulletin. A sampling of the contents: The world's best after-dinner speech: I'll take the check One thing you can say about an egoist: He never talks about other people. Preachers don't talk in their sleep; they talk in their parishioner's sleep. Conversation heard after church: ""Do you think Madilyn Johnson is tinting her hair?"" ""I don't know; I didn't see her."" ""Do you think that dress Mrs. Hansen was wearing should be paraded before God-fearing people of the church?"" ""I didn't notice that, either."" ""A lot of good it does YOU to go to church."" He dieted religiously: he quit snacking in church. An old Scotchman lay dying. The pastor and family gathered around his bedside. Finally the old man motioned to his grandson. When the grandson reached the bed, the old Scotchman laid his gold watch in the boy's hand. ""Grandson, how'd you like to buy a good watch?"" Walter M. Buescher began collecting jokes and bits of humor over 60 years ago. He ended up with four file drawers, some of which was published by Prentice-Hall in their book Library of Humor. During a lifetime of public speaking across the country and in his position as Sales Training Manager with an international company, Buescher drew from his file to entertain and inspire thousands in his audiences.

Book excerpt: Recent Letter: Dear Pastor Robert. As a Religious leader and broadcaster, I am always sent material that is funny, but may be overly disrespectful to God, my TV audience, or other denominations. I can honestly say that More Humor From The Pulpit is one of the most enjoyable collection of religious humor I have read in a long time. While 12 of the jokes and stories I am told are from your own writings, the rest have been passed on from minister to minister and told to congregations throughout the years. Surprisingly I found many in your book that I have not heard before. I highly recommend that all ministers and anyone else who enjoys a good laugh, to pick up their own copy.

Book excerpt: Why are Anglicans such bad chess players? Because they don't know the difference between a Bishop and a Queen. Did you hear about the new liberal branch of the Church of England? It has six commandments and four suggestions. This book is packed with (mostly) clean, good-natured jokes, riddles and funny stories old and new about clergy, churches and Christianity. Get into the humour habit and prepare yourself for the 'laughter-life'! Unlike most church joke books, it is from a British rather than American perspective, but it will appeal to anybody looking for jokes for sermons, parish magazines etc or who would just like a good laugh at church life.

Hatch offers a provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic, arguing that during this period American Christianity was democratized and common people became powerful actors on the religious scene. Hatch examines five distinct traditions or mass movements that emerged early in the nineteenth century£the Christian movement, Methodism, the Baptist movement, the black churches, and the Mormons£showing how all offered compelling visions of individual potential and collective aspiration to the unschooled and unsophisticated" -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since William Dean Howells declared his "realism war" in the 1880s, literary historians have regarded the rise of "realism" and "naturalism" as the great development in American post-Civil War fiction. Yet there are many problems with this generalization. It is virtually impossible, for example, to extract from the novels and manifestoes of American writers of this period any consistent definitions of realism or naturalism as modes of literary representation. Rather than seek common traits in widely divergent "realist" and "naturalist" literary works, Michael Davitt Bell focuses here on the role that these terms played in the social and literary discourse of the 1880s and 1890s. Bell argues that in America, "realism" and "naturalism" never achieved the sort of theoretical rigor that they did in European literary debate. Instead, the function of these ideas in America was less aesthetic than ideological, promoting as "reality" a version of social normalcy based on radically anti-"literary" and heavily gendered assumptions. What effects, Bell asks, did ideas about realism and naturalism have on writers who embraced and resisted them? To answer this question, he devotes separate chapters to the work of Howells and Frank Norris (the principal American advocates of realism and naturalism in the 1880s and 1890s), Mark Twain, Henry James, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, and Sarah Orne Jewett. Bell reveals that a chief function of claiming to be a realist or a naturalist was to provide assurance that one was a "real" man rather than an "effeminate" artist. Since the 1880s, Bell asserts, all serious American fiction writers have had to contend with this problematic conception of literary realism. The true story of the transformation of American fiction after the Civil War is the history of this contention - a history of individual accommodations, evasions, holding actions, and occasional triumphs.
