Book excerpt: In a world of church culture that has so many broken families, our churches have become broken; broken families produce broken churches. This state of the church has not gone unnoticed in the last five or so years and many pastors and leaders have tried to come up with solutions to pick back up the pieces of the church and put her back together again. But in some regards we have tried to do it backwards. We have addressed the church corporately, trying to heal and restore ourselves from the outside rather than addressing the root of the issues lying within the people, the families that are the church. Just as much as healing and restoration in individuals must start from the inside out, the healing of our church must start the same way. At the core of every church is the family. The family was the first entity God created (way before the church herself), the one He chooses to multiply His kingdom through, and the one who Satan Himself is after. I believe the paradigm of family ministry I divinely "fell" into and now pursue and run after, is a significant answer to the broken families of our church. The work of the Lord within families has a rippling effect, touching every aspect of the church herself. The paradigm of presence-driven family ministry I am about to share with you is not meant to replace your children's ministry or certainly not adult ministry. It is meant to be its own separate arm of children's ministry where the focus is completely centered around family. It is to be an intentional effort to host regular family gatherings or services that engage both kids and parents into the presence of God, the deep word of God, and gifts of God through a unique paradigm and blueprint. In the recent years family ministry has become a "buzz" word within the children's ministry community in response to the understanding that the family must be addressed in the church. However, although there is nothing wrong with family fun nights, bowling parties, and movie nights, this is not what our family ministry is about. Although fun in its own right, presence-driven family ministry addresses the spiritual aspects of the family according to the blueprint and heart of God set be-fore us in His word. In this book you will find God's heart for the generations, how the family entity fits into God's Kingdom plan, vision casting as to why presence-driven family ministry is so important and desperately needed in the body, the benefits and fruit of this type of ministry, and a step by step blueprint on how to start and pursue presence-driven family ministry in your church. If you are willing to come along on this journey with me, I promise your families, your children's ministry, and your church, will never be the same!

The presence of God is the core, the sine qua non, of mere Christianity. Gods presence is what is needed to win the day over the present powers of darkness. This book shows what it means for a church to be presence-driven, and what leadership looks like in the presence-driven church.

The most effective family ministries refocus every church process to engage parents in discipling their children and to draw family members together instead of pulling them apart. In this second edition, Jones expands the definition of family ministry, and broadens the book's focus to address urban perspectives and family ministry in diverse settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American families are in crisis, and the need for family ministry is more evident than ever. In her many years of ministry, research and teaching, author Diana Garland has found that the strength of Christian families is rooted in their faith and nurtured in their congregations. Garland believes that Christian families gain strength in part because of their communities of faith. Twelve years after first coming to print, the award-winning Family Ministry has been given a significant makeover. In this new edition Garland takes a three-pronged approach to family ministry, which includes developing families grounded in Christian faith, helping families live the teachings of Jesus with one another, and equipping and supporting families as they learn to serve others. The insights gained are organized into four main sections: The Context for Family Ministry Family Formation Family Dynamics Leading Family Ministry Garland examines and fully integrates the historical, sociological, theological and biblical contexts to understand the role and meaning of family in the life of Christians and the church. She perceptively connects these explorations with the social and cultural context of the early twenty-first century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Contemplative Youth Ministry is refreshing rain for dry youth workers and barren youth ministries. More than the same old youth ministry tips and tricks, it gives principles and practices to soak in God’s grace, love, and power. I wish I had read it 15 years ago.” - Kara Powell, Ph.D., executive director, Center for Youth Ministry and Family Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary “Mark invites readers to be encountered by the presence of Jesus who is always near. This book is transparent about the challenges that churches and families face as they desire to be effective in youth ministry. The book is filled with the honest stories of different kinds of youth ministries representing the breadth of Christianity in the United States. I heartily endorse Contemplative Youth Ministry as a rich encounter with the souls of youth and adults whose lives have been transformed by our very present God.” - Bill Kees, director of youth ministries, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) “Mark Yaconelli not only reminds us of some of the long-forgotten pathways of faith, he shares with us how it actually looks when men and women who love God practice it with young people. I especially appreciate Mark’s optimism in his perspective of today’s kids, for his insights are grounded in God’s view of them.” - Chap Clark, Ph.D., associate professor of youth, family, and culture, Fuller Theological Seminary “Mark Yaconelli was experimenting with contemplative youth ministry practices before contemplative youth ministry practices became cool. This book has about it the unique air of authenticity. He shares with us in these pages his own journey as a youth worker who actually believes that God’s still small voice speaks louder than the roaring windstorm of our busy youth ministry calendars. It’s a book about creating for our students places of silence and opening up spaces for God to speak.” - Duffy Robbins, professor of youth ministry, Eastern University; author of Enjoy the Silence and This Way to Youth Ministry “Mark Yaconelli has emerged as one of youth ministry’s most provocative ‘voices in the wilderness,’ calling us back to our theological taproots: The contemplative practices that bind our lives to the life of Christ. If Mark’s research has taught us anything, it’s that these practices do not cause youth ministry to take fl ight into a spiritual never-never land; rather they anchor young people—and their churches—in the fertile soil of Christian tradition, in the nitty-gritty of daily life, and in the explosive transformation that awaits us when we wait upon God.” - Kenda Creasy Dean, parent, pastor, and professor of youth, Princeton Theological Seminary; author of Practicing Passion: Youth and the Quest for a Passionate Church

God's heart has always been to create a perpetual generation of worshippers that would daily abide in His presence. However, today, more often than not, our children go one way at church and we go the other. This same pattern repeats itself within in our homes. Satan has used every distraction possible to rob us of presence-filled family worship. The altar of our home, where God's vision for our families is to be cultivated and manifested, has been stripped away and replaced with busyness, rebellion, compromise, and selfish lust of the flesh. It is time to pick up the greatest call we will every have in life and lay hold of the compass that points us to the family altar once again. It is the purpose of this book to give parents a step-by-step outline and blueprint, using the Tabernacle model, on how to create a family altar. But not just a family altar, but a habitation place of the Lord's presence right within your home. In this book, I will take you on a journey of Biblical blueprint for family worship and give you a step-by-step instructional manual of family worship using the Tabernacle of Moses. But this isn't just another book with good information, I also provide you with very practical, creative, and spirit-filled ways that you can begin and continue in the vision and calling of the family altar to get you started . It is time to fill our homes with the presence of Jesus once again and allow worship to be the lifestyle we live, not just a place we go.

Book excerpt: Many children’s ministries are a flurry of activity, run by dedicated volunteers and staff who put in long hours and work hard for the good of the children and parents they serve. Yet despite good intentions, many children’s ministries today are not effective. They lack purpose and intentionality. A twenty-five year veteran of children’s ministry in the local church, pastor Steve Adams has ministered to families in multiple churches, from tiny church plants to his present position at Saddleback Church. In this book, Steve applies the revolutionary insights of the Purpose Driven Church to children’s ministry and leads readers on a journey of discovery, showing them how to develop an intentional ministry process that moves children toward spiritual health while building a healthy ministry environment for those who work with kids. You will learn how to ask and answer five simple but powerful questions: Why are we on this journey? Where are you and where are you going? Who are we trying to reach? How will we move our children towards spiritual health? What are the essential elements necessary for the journey? There is no single key to a successful children’s ministry, nor is there only one way that works for everyone. But there is a proven process you can follow and Steve shows how children’s ministries all over the world are reaching their God-given potential by discovering their biblical purpose, avoiding the traps of frustration and burnout.

Not that the church doesn't matter, it just means we need to look at what we do at church differently. Spiritual convictions, for better or worse, will most always pass from parent to child and not pastor to child. Yet, many churches are still following a model of ministry that places the spiritual growth of kids and teens primarily on the shoulders of the ministry leaders and not on the parents. This book is an attempt to develop a fresh, simple model of ministry that shifts our thinking from believing church is the primary source of spiritual growth to knowing that the home is the place lasting discipleship occurs. In other words, parents aren't hindering OUR ministry; rather, we just might be hindering THEIR ministry! Join the journey as we discover a new way of developing disciples for Jesus!
