This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book examines a range of processes associated with physical activity that are of relevance to those working in education – including cognition, learning, memory, attention, mood, stress and mental health symptoms – and draws on the latest insights from exercise neuroscience to help explain the evidence. With contributions from leading scientists and educationalists from around the world, this book cuts through the myths to interrogate the relationship between physical activity and educational achievement in children, adolescents and young adults in a variety of cultural and geographical contexts. Examining both the benefits and risks associated with physical activity from the perspectives of exercise science and educational psychology, it also looks ahead to ask what the limits of this research might be and what effects it might have on the future practice of education. Physical Activity and Educational Achievement: Insights from Exercise Neuroscience is fascinating reading for any student, academic or practitioner with an interest in exercise science and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has two major objectives. The first is to propose the Health Resource Allocation Strategy as a social and political process for comparing costs and outcomes of alternative policy options in the health and medical care arena to select interventions with greatest benefit in relation to cost. The second objective is to provide a reference for state-ofthe-art development and application of health status and quality of life measures for health care policy and research, including clinical applications. Not all policy applications of health- related quality of life involve resource allocation. Thus we present guidelines to assessment for use in program evaluation, monitoring of health policy, clinical trials, and health services research.

Book excerpt: A lot of time has been spent trying to convince health care providers and policy makers of the enormous importance of macrovascular disease in persons with type 2 diabetes. In this volume, we present facts that dem onstrate how important it is to recognize macrovascular disease in these patients in daily practice. This volume has been compiled to help those already involved in dia betes care, to be more involved in cardiovascular risk control, a task that is not easily achieved. The area of cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes is heterogeneous. Trying to characterize it, we can only say: certainly we know more than we do, but for sure we do less than we could. Our challenge is to change this. Nicolae Htmcu Professor N. Hancu was born in Romania in 1940. He studied medicine at the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, and obtained his speciality in internal medicine in 1970, and in diabetes, nutrition and metabolic disease in 1986. He was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases of the same university in 1993. He has been a full member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences since 1995. Professor Hancu's major interest is related to clinical lipidology, visceral obesity, and cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes. He has published over 200 papers and 14 books in this area. He has been invited as Visiting Professor at many universities in Madrid, Valladolid, Barcelona, and Los Angeles.

The consequences of disease-related malnutrition are numerous, and include shorter survival rates, lower functional capacity, longer hospital stays, greater complication rates, and higher prescription rates. Nutritional support, in the form of oral nutritional supplements or tube feeding, has proven to lead to an improvement in patient outcome. This book is unique in that it draws together the results of numerous different studies that demonstrate the benefits of nutritional support and provides an evidence base for it. It also discusses the causes, consequences, and prevalence of disease-related malnutrition, and provides insights into the best possible use of enteral nutritional support.

Book excerpt: As the general public has become more aware of advances in nutrition, consumer demands for advice on matters of diet and disease have grown. This book offers recommendations to upgrade what were found to be largely inadequate nutrition programs in U.S. medical schools in order that health professionals be better qualified to advise and treat their patients. A comprehensive study of one-third of American 4-year undergraduate medical schools provided information on the current status of nutrition programs at each school. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations made from analysis of this gathered information. Questions examined in this volume include: Has medical education kept pace with advances in nutrition science? Are medical students equipped to convey sound nutritional advice to their patients? What strategies are needed to initiate and sustain adequate teaching of nutrition in medical schools?

In the last 10 years, substantial progress has been made in terms of understanding some of the mechanisms that drive severe asthma; there have also been concomitant advances in the recognition of specific molecular phenotypes. This ERS Monograph covers all aspects of severe asthma – epidemiology, diagnosis, mechanisms, treatment and management – but has a particular focus on recent understanding of mechanistic heterogeneity based on an analytic approach using various ‘omics platforms applied to clinically well-defined asthma cohorts. How these advances have led to improved management targets is also emphasised. This book brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of those from around the world who are collaborating to solve the problem of severe asthma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. WILKINSON Patients with frequent or daily headaches pose a very difficult problem for the physician who has to treat them, particularly as many patients think that there should be a medicine or medicines which give them instant relief. In the search for the compound which would meet this very natural desire, many drugs have been manufactured and the temptation for the physician is either to increase the dose of a drug which seems to be, at any rate, partially effective, or to add one or more drugs to those which the patient is already taking. Although there have been some references to the dangers of overdosage of drugs for migraine in the past, it was not until relatively recently that it was recognized that drugs given for the relief of headache, if taken injudiciously, may themselves cause headache. The first drugs to be implicated in this way were ergotamine and phenazone. In the case of ergotamine tartrate, the dangers of ergotism were well known as this was a disorder which had been known and written about for many years. In the treatment of headache, fully blown ergotism is rare and in recent years has usually been due to self-medication in doses much greater than those prescribed although there are a few recorded cases where toxic amounts have been given.
