When these needs are identified and interests explored, students are more likely to experience a positive postsecondary outcome. Secondary educational programs, in order to help them accomplish this, should include six key elements into the students program and transition planning. These elements, identified in research help students reach their postsecondary goals. The intent of this study was to determine which of these elements are identified and implemented in secondary programs and transition planning and to what extent these elements adequately address the educational and employment needs of students with disabilities. A qualitative case study was utilized to analyze and evaluate one to four years’ worth of transition plans for fourteen high school special education students on the existence of these elements. In addition, parent interviews were conducted to identify the effects these elements had on their student’s post secondary experience. This study found, the six elements were implemented to varying degrees in each transition plan. Some elements were consistently identified including: assessment, student involvement and transition goals. Parent and agency involvement and training however were not identified in all plans and were found to varying degrees. Since all elements work hand in hand, it is important to include them, to the fullest extent possible in order to provide students the greatest opportunity for success. Parent interviews confirm these findings which suggest in order to help set up students for success, all elements need to be implemented into the secondary educational program. This study is limited by the small case sample but hopes to contribute to the existing literature that implementation of the key elements provide students with disabilities the best opportunity for a successful post secondary outcome.

The transition from high school to college is marked by the transfer of responsibility for accessing and monitoring services and performance. The familiar model of special education services at the high school level changes significantly at the postsecondary level, shifting responsibility from the K-12 school system to the individual student. Research is limited in specific transition processes that manifest into successful transitioning of students with learning differences from secondary to postsecondary educational institutions. This study sought to investigate the quality of a series of non-cognitive transition modules developed to prepare students with learning differences for the postsecondary education setting. For purposes of this research, the terminology learning differences was used, except when referring to learning disabilities as it relates to federal law. Though transition planning for students with learning differences has long been discussed and supported by federal mandate, there are shortcomings in the literature as to static or longitudinal studies supporting or refuting practices that support transitioning of students with high incidence disabilities from secondary to postsecondary settings. This study served to provide a systematic, non-cognitive curricular approach to preparation for students with learning differences. The purpose of this study was to determine teacher and high school student perceived effectiveness of a series of non-cognitive transition curriculum modules developed to prepare high school students with learning differences for a postsecondary educational setting. Using a mixed-methods explanatory research design, the researcher collected quantitative data that would be expanded upon by further collection of qualitative data. Using the qualitative data to explain and extend the paradigm created by the presentation of the quantitative data, the research effectively answered the proposed study questions and provided insight into the preparedness of secondary students with learning differences for transitioning to a postsecondary education. Further implementation in secondary settings, with continuous feedback from teachers and students for appropriateness and effectiveness, will provide a sustainable transition curriculum designed to help students with learning differences experience a positive transition to postsecondary education.

Some of these populations include African American students, LGBTQ students, and students with disabilities. There is a dearth of information and research on providing guidance on implementation, research, and best practices in equity-based career development, college readiness, and successful postsecondary transitions for minoritized, at risk, or vulnerable populations. The editors of this volume invited authors with research and practice expertise around various student populations in preparing them for college and career readiness as well as postsecondary transitions. This book is the first of its kind to discuss career development and postsecondary transitions from an access and equity perspective. Further, this text serves as a call to action to ensure the United States’ most vulnerable populations has an opportunity to successfully transition into multiple postsecondary options after high school.
