Book excerpt: This book contains th~ Proceedings of the World Conference of the International Nuclear Target Development Society held in Boston, October 1-3, 1979. Approximately seventy participants and registrants from the following countries attended this Conference: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, United Kingdom, German Federal Republic, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and the United States. The Conference was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation. Conference Chairman in residence was Jozef Jaklovsky who was assisted by the invited Co-Chairman D. Riel of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. This publication incorporates the proceedings of an inter national conference concentrating on the general field of target preparation for use with particle accelerators. The publication includes additional contributions on target preparations by honorary members of this Society. For the first time in this field, an extensive bibliography collection (1936-June 1980) is included. Bibliography, subject index, author index, country index, and patent index have been organized by the editor. The biblioqraphy includes thin and thick particle accelerator targets and also preparation and use of targets in particle accelerators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrostatic accelerators are an important and widespread subgroup within the broad spectrum of modern, large particle acceleration devices. They are specifically designed for applications that require high-quality ion beams in terms of energy stability and emittance at comparatively low energies (a few MeV). Their ability to accelerate virtually any kind of ion over a continuously tunable range of energies makes them a highly versatile tool for investigations in many research fields including, but not limited to, atomic and nuclear spectroscopy, heavy ion reactions, accelerator mass spectroscopy as well as ion-beam analysis and modification. The book is divided into three parts. The first part concisely introduces the field of accelerator technology and techniques that emphasize their major modern applications. The second part treats the electrostatic accelerator per se: its construction and operational principles as well as its maintenance. The third part covers all relevant applications in which electrostatic accelerators are the preferred tool for accelerator-based investigations. Since some topics are common to all types of accelerators, Electrostatic Accelerators will also be of value for those more familiar with other types of accelerators.

Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are used today for an increasing range of scientific and technological applications. They are very powerful tools to investigate the origin and structure of matter, and to improve understanding of the interaction of radiation with materials, including transmutation of nuclides and beneficial effects or risks from radiation. They are used to identify properties of molecules that can be used in pharmacy, for medical diagnosis and therapy, or for biophysics studies.Particle accelerators must be operated in safe ways that protect operators, the population and the environment. New technological and research applications give rise to new aspects in radiation shielding. These workshop proceedings review the state of the art in radiation shielding of accelerator facilities and of irradiated targets. They also evaluate progress made and discuss the additional developments required to meet radiation protection needs.

Book excerpt: Strongly focused and monoenergetic charged-particle beams from modern accelerators and targets fabricated from quantities of isotopically enriched and stable materials are the essential components from many current nuclear physics experiments. Although a large body of this kind of experimental work requires substantial amounts of target material, an important subset of such experiments can be done with as little as a few .mu.g of material. Experiments where charged particles or electrons can be focused on or transported to a detector are examples of accelerator-based studies which can be made with targets that contain relatively small amounts of material. For these kinds of studies, it then becomes possible to extend the domain of potential target materials to species which are very rare or which are unstable and undergo radioactive decay. At our laboratory during the last ten years, we have made targets for nuclear spectroscopy studies of 152Eu (13.4y), 154Eu (8.5y), 249Bk (320d), 151Sm (90y), and 148Gd (75y). We will report our experience with fabricating these and other kinds of stable targets and discuss our plans for preparing additional targets which offer interesting and exciting prospects for future nuclear research studies. 12 refs., 1 fig., 2 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the physics, technology and applications of particle accelerators. It illustrates the interconnections between applications and basic physical principles, enabling readers to better understand current and upcoming technologies and see beyond the paradigmatic borders of the individual fields. The reader will discover why accelerators are no longer just toys for scientists, but have also become modern and efficient nuclear workhorses. The book starts with an introduction to the relevant technologies and radiation safety aspects of accelerating electrons and ions from several keV to roughly 250 MeV. It subsequently describes the physics behind the interactions of these particle beams with matter. Mathematical descriptions and state-of-the-art computer models of energy-loss and nuclear interactions between the particle beams and targets round out the physics coverage. On this basis, the book then presents the most important accelerator applications in science, medicine, and industry, explaining and comparing more than 20 major application fields, encompassing semiconductors, cancer treatment, and space exploration. Despite the disparate fields involved, this book demonstrates how the same essential technology and physics connects all of these applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most elements are synthesized, or "cooked", by thermonuclear reactions in stars. The newly formed elements are released into the interstellar medium during a star's lifetime, and are subsequently incorporated into a new generation of stars, into the planets that form around the stars, and into the life forms that originate on the planets. Moreover, the energy we depend on for life originates from nuclear reactions that occur at the center of the Sun. Synthesis of the elements and nuclear energy production in stars are the topics of nuclear astrophysics, which is the subject of this book. It presents nuclear structure and reactions, thermonuclear reaction rates, experimental nuclear methods, and nucleosynthesis in detail. These topics are discussed in a coherent way, enabling the reader to grasp their interconnections intuitively. The book serves both as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, with worked examples and end-of-chapter excercises, but also as a reference book for use by researchers working in the field of nuclear astrophysics.

Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are having an increasingly important impact on research, technology and lifestyle. Today they cover a wide range of applications including material science and medical applications. In recent years, requirements from new technological and research applications have emerged and the number of accelerator facilities has significantly increased. Their parameters (such as the beam energy, beam currents and intensities, targets composition, etc.) vary widely giving rise to new radiation shielding aspects and problems. The main objectives of the SATIF Meetings are to: promote the exchange of information among experts in the field of accelerator shielding and related topics; identify areas where international co-operation can be fruitful; and carry on a program of work in order to achieve progress in specific priority areas.
