Book excerpt: Design and development of functional nano materials especially, heterogeneous catalysts can directly impact the sustainability of industrial processes. This dissertation focuses on developing novel synthetic strategies and utilizing advanced characterization techniques to synthesize functional nanomaterials with focus on designing well-defined catalysts. The primary focus is on synthesizing and catalytic testing of Lewis acidic nano-zeolites. Lewis acidic zeolites, especially, tin containing zeolites like Sn-Beta and Sn-MFI, have been shown to catalyze a large array of chemical reactions. However, micropores of these zeolites can reduce the catalytic performance because of diffusion limitations. To overcome these limitations, strategies including development of hierarchical structures and reduction in particle size have been investigated. Nonetheless, synthesizing Lewis acidic nano-zeolites still remains a challenge. In this work, the synthesis conditions are modified to achieve a five-fold reduction in particle size for Sn-MFI (nSnMFI) as compared to conventional synthesis (cSnMFI). To demonstrate the benefit of nano-zeolites for catalytic application, epoxide ring opening (ERO) with alcohol is used as a probe reaction. Enhanced diffusion within the nSnMFI improves catalytic performance for bulky reactants, while retaining the inherent activity of the catalytic sites. The advantage of nSnMFI is however limited by the small pore size of MFI structure. To expand the scope, nano-Sn-Beta, a large pore zeolite is also synthesized. The improvement in performance over nSnMFI and conventional Sn-Beta zeolite is demonstrated using ring opening of 1,2-epoxyoctane with ethanol.

Book excerpt: This book is a "world first", since the furfural industry has been traditionally secretive to the point of appearing shrouded in clouds of mystery. Even renowned encyclopedic works have published but scant and often erroneous information on the subject. Striking a healthy balance between theory and practice, the book leads the reader from reaction mechanisms and kinetics to the technology of making furfural by various old and new processes, using conventional raw materials or sulfite waste liquor. Detailed discussions of means of increasing the yield are of great chemical and technological interest as well as of immense economic importance. From furfural proper, the treatise shifts to the fascinating field of wanted and unwanted by-products ranging from largely unutilized carboxylic acids to troublesome impurities such as 5-methyl furfural and 2-furyl methyl ketone, and then to extremely valuable serendipitous flavor compounds such as diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione. A wide variety of derivatives are discussed; considerable space is devoted to polytetrahydrofuran, an important building block of stretchable synthetic fibers, while furan resins from both furfural and furfuryl alcohol are given the attention commensurate with their industrial importance. Notable supplementary chapters cover the in-line measurement of furfural, the treatment of furfural waste water, and various aspects of corrosion. A chapter on the applications of furfural elaborates not only traditional uses in extracting petroleum and vegetable oils but also the sensational discovery that furfural is a highly effective "indirect nematocide". Without becoming toxic, it changes the microflora of the soil by stimulating bacteria antagonistic to nematodes, thereby reducing the nematode population to zero, at an unprecedented low price. It is believed that this application will be the principal outlet for furfural in the future. A comprehensive list of physical properties, some never published before, make the book an indispensable companion for producers, users and researchers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nano-oxide materials lend themselves to applications in a wide variety of emerging technological fields such as microelectronics, catalysts, ceramics, coatings, and energy storage. However, developing new routes for making nano-based materials is a challenging area for solid-state materials chemists. This book does just that by describing a novel method for preparing them. The authors have developed a novel low-temperature, self-propagating synthetic route to nano-oxides by the solution combustion and combustible precursor processes. This method provides the desired composition, structure, and properties for many types of technologically useful nanocrystalline oxide materials like alumina, ceria, iron oxides, titania, yttria, and zirconia, among others. The book is particularly instructive in bringing readers one step closer to the exploration of nanomaterials. Students of nanoscience can acquaint themselves with the actual production and evaluation of nanopowders by this route, while academic researchers and industrial scientists will find answers to a host of questions on nano-oxides. The book also provides an impetus for scientists in industrial research to evaluate and explore new ways to scale up the production of nanomaterials, offering helpful suggestions for further research.

Book excerpt: Hollow zeolite single crystals have received particular interest in catalysis. The presence of a large cavity in these model zeolites enables the study of diffusional limitation in Catalysis. The cavity also enables the encapsulation of metal nanoparticles. However, their synthesis requires specific structural characteristics and it has been limited for long to zeolites with the MFI structure. The objective of this PhD work was to investigate the synthesis of hollow Beta zeolites (*BEA framework type) and study the impact of the hollow morphology on molecular diffusion and catalysis. Two different strategies have been envisaged: a dissolution/recrystallization approach using CIT-6, a zincosilicate with the same *BEA topology and a selective desilication route. Pt nanoparticles encapsulated in hollow crystals obtained from CIT-6 showed remarkable size-selectivity in the hydrogenation of aromatics. The effect of the hollow morphology in molecular diffusion was studied using the ZLC technique; the characteristic diffusion time of the hollow morphology was reduced by 30-83% compared to the corresponding bulk zeolite. Despite that, the hollow structure had no influence on the catalytic activities for the hydroisomerization of n-C16 and for the cracking of cyclohexane. The presence/absence of diffusional limitation is discussed.

Among others, technologies of producing chemicals, absolutely necessary for maintaining a comfortable life, have to be modified, in some instances fundamentally changed now, or in the very near future. Developing new technologies requires strong and innovative fundamental research. In order to provide opportunity for crossfertilization the Federation of European Zeolite Associations (FEZA) decided to organise a conference, where researchers from academia as well as industry can meet, exchange ideas, show and discuss research efforts and results concerning the development of environmentally friendly processes and technologies. The conference, and thus the proceedings are divided into two main parts. The first part contains works concerning the synthesis, modification and characterisation of zeolitic materials as catalyst candidates in environmentally friendly technologies. Works in the second part describe various applications starting from developing highly selective reactions for the fine chemical industry, through waste-water treatment to applying zeolite for formulating bacteria for pest control.

This book was released on 2009-10-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for putting together a tutorial on zeolites came originally from my co-editor, Eric Derouane, about 5 years ago. I ?rst met Eric in the mid-1980s when he spent 2 years working for Mobil R&D at our then Corporate lab at Princeton, NJ. He was on the senior technical staff with projects in the synthesis and characterization of new materials. At that time, I managed a group at our Paulsboro lab that was responsible for catalyst characterization in support of our catalyst and process development efforts, and also had a substantial group working on new material synthesis. Hence, our interests overlapped considerably and we met regularly. After Eric moved back to Namur (initially), we maintained contact, and in the 1990s, we met a number of times in Europe on projects of joint interest. It was after I retired from ExxonMobil in 2002 that we began to discuss the tutorial concept seriously. Eric had (semi-)retired and lived on the Algarve, the southern coast of Portugal. In January 2003, my wife and I spent 3 weeks outside of Lagos, and I worked parts of most days with Eric on the proposed content of the book. We decided on a comprehensive approach that ultimately amounted to some 20+ chapters covering all of zeolite chemistry and catalysis and gave it the title Zeolite Chemistry and Catalysis: An integrated Approach and Tutorial.
