Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis details the experimental realisation and magnetic manipulation of an 87Rb Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). An introduction to the concepts and mechanisms leading to the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate is given, as well as a brief overview of BEC manipulation techniques and recent BEC experiments. This is followed by a theoretical discussion of the evolution of BECs, detailing in particular their statistical and quantum mechanical properties. The results of this chapter will be used later in the thesis to analyse experimental data regarding the temperature-dependent ground state population, ballistic expansion and magnetic manipulation of BECs. Elaboration of the various theoretical mechanisms involved in BEC production and detection will ensue. This chapter will be followed by an account of our experimental implementation of these BEC formation techniques, concluding with the creation of the Sussex rubidium BEC. Simplicity and durability are novel aspects of the BEC apparatus design, which incorporates easy-to-build stable diode lasers, a low power double magneto-optical trap (MOT) employing a loading technique based solely on light- pressure, the omission of dark or compressed MOT stages in the BEC sequence, a stable magnetic trap regulated by straightforward power MOSFET banks and an extra high vacuum essentially maintained by a single low-throughput ion pump. Magnetic mirrors for laser-cooled atoms have now been produced with excellent optical quality. A natural extension of this work is the use of these 'hard' magnetic mirrors as atom optical elements to focus and image coherent atomic sources such as BECs. In this thesis first steps in this direction are reported with the demonstration of reflection and focusing of an 87Rb BEC by a soft magnetic mirror. Studies of the BEC's dynamics as the mirror's radius of curvature is varied relative to the drop height are also presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The role of quantum statistics in these enhanced scatterings was studied. It was shown that the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state is not necessary. These processes are in principle possible for fermionic or non-degenerate samples, provided the atomic ensemble has a sufficiently long coherence time. By moving a focused, far off-resonant laser beam through a condensate, vortex excitations were created in a Bose-Einstein condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The technique was shown to be a powerful tool to study turbulent superfluid flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold atomic gases is a rapidly developing area of physics that attracts many young researchers around the world. Written by world renowned experts in the field, this book gives a comprehensive overview of exciting developments in Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity from a theoretical perspective. The authors also make sense of key experiments from the past twenty years with a special focus on the physics of ultracold atomic gases. These systems are characterized by a rich variety of features which make them similar to other important systems of condensed matter physics (like superconductors and superfluids). At the same time they exhibit very peculiar properties which are the result of their gaseous nature, the possibility of trapping in a variety of low dimensional and periodical configurations, and of manipulating the two-body interaction. The book presents a systematic theoretical description based on the most successful many-body approaches applied both to bosons and fermions, at equilibrium and out of equilibrium, at zero as well as at finite temperature. Both theorists and experimentalists will benefit from the book, which is mainly addressed to beginners in the field (master students, PhD students, young postdocs), but also to more experienced researchers who can find in the book novel inspirations and motivations as well as new insightful connections. Building on the authors' first book, Bose-Einstein Condensation (Oxford University Press, 2003), this text offers a more systematic description of Fermi gases, quantum mixtures, low dimensional systems and dipolar gases. It also gives further emphasis on the peculiar phenomenon of superfluidity and its key role in many observable properties of these ultracold quantum gases.

Book excerpt: Among the most remarkable effects that quantum mechanics adds to the catalog of the thermal properties of matter is "condensation" of an ideal gas of identical particles into a single quantum state, the principle of which was discovered in the theory of statistical mechanics by Bose and Einstein in the 1920s. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a mechanism for producing a macroscopic quantum system, and is exemplary of the macroscopic quantum phenomena of superconductivity and superfluidity. These 15 papers provide an introduction to current work on BEC.

Book excerpt: Ultracold neutral atoms can be trapped and coherently manipulated close to a surface using chip-based magnetic microtraps. This opens the possibility of studying interactions between atoms and on-chip solid-state systems such as micro- and nanostructured mechanical oscillators. This thesis reports experiments, where a controlled coupling between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a micromechanical oscillator is realized for the first time. The interaction relies on surface forces experienced by the atoms trapped at about 1 micrometer distance from the mechanical structure. The surface forces are used to resonantly couple the mechanical motion of the oscillator to collective motion of the atoms. Coupling via surface forces does not require magnets, electrodes, or mirrors on the oscillator and could thus be employed to couple atoms to molecular-scale oscillators such as carbon nanotubes. In the long-term, the toolbox for quantum manipulation of ultracold atoms could be employed to read out, cool, and coherently manipulate the quantum state of a mechanical oscillator. The thesis discusses three different scenarios that could enable atom-oscillator coupling at the quantum level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, predicted by Einstein in 1925, was first produced in the laboratory in 1995, the study of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases has become one of the most active areas in contemporary physics. This book explains phenomena in ultracold gases from basic principles, without assuming a detailed knowledge of atomic, condensed matter, and nuclear physics. This new edition has been revised and updated, and includes new chapters on optical lattices, low dimensions, and strongly-interacting Fermi systems. This book provides a unified introduction to the physics of ultracold atomic Bose and Fermi gases for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experimentalists and theorists. Chapters cover the statistical physics of trapped gases, atomic properties, cooling and trapping atoms, interatomic interactions, structure of trapped condensates, collective modes, rotating condensates, superfluidity, interference phenomena, and trapped Fermi gases. Problems are included at the end of each chapter.
