Book excerpt: Today’s energy needs are presenting challenges which have to be addressed with novel, as well as sustainable and efficient solutions. Within this context, the family of metal oxide (MO) materials offers a broad diversity of both structural and physicochemical properties, along with great versatility of synthesis. Nanoscale MO particles can be decorated with other nanoparticles, particularly of metals, and new properties may arise from such combinations. The present dissertation work reports the details of the development of an experimental method to accomplish the decoration of MO materials with metal species originated by an effusive source, along with the characterization of the decorated materials’ properties. A custom-made vacuum chamber was optimized with several components (e.g. a calibration sensor to measure the effusive beam’s flux; a conical vessel to mix and expose the MO powders to such beam) and utilized to produce different decorated materials. The pure MO materials were synthesized as high-quality, size-selected particles with a patented method. Due to their different structure and optoelectronic character, magnesium (MgO) and zinc (ZnO) oxide were chosen as substrates to explore this novel decoration process; while copper, nickel and cobalt were selected as the decorating metal species, offering the opportunity to study not yet fully understood transition metal electronic properties. The several examples of newly formed materials were characterized using different techniques, in particular X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (reflectance was then converted into absorbance). These techniques revealed trends in some properties of the novel materials, and were paired with more microscopic probes, namely magnetization and electron microscopy measurements. Great emphasis was put on the Cu/MgO system. In particular, Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy has shown clear presence of metal deposits of copper on the MgO surfaces, confirming the results gained with the previous techniques. Furthermore, a computer code was developed to facilitate the pore size distribution analysis obtained on mesoporous substrates. Several different materials were studied, in order to show the viability of the automated process, and the potential applicability of this method to studying porous structures for the same decoration process described earlier.

Book excerpt: The present work deals with the preparation of mesoporous metal oxide systems by means of new block copolymer templates and the development of original structural characterization methods. In the first part of the work is shown that PIB-PEO block copolymers generate robust and highly porous metal oxide textures characterized by large pores of spherical form. Sol-gel mesoporous TiO2 films were also tested as semiconductors in dye sensitized solar cell devices noticing promising results in comparison with the nanoparticulate systems. Furthermore, the remarkable templating behavior of the PIB-PEO block copolymers is also presented by the preparation of hierarchical silica powders. Due to the structural complexity of these latter systems their characterization could not be exhaustively carried out by means of standard analysis approaches. The employment of the in-situ SAXS/SANS-physisorption technique provided thus an exclusive possibility to study in detail the porosity and its organization in these hierarchical materials. Interesting applications of this novel characterization technique are given also by the analysis of further systems like periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs).

Book excerpt: This thesis contains two parts: 1) synthesis and characterization of porous metal oxides that include zinc oxide and a porous mixed-valent manganese oxide with an amorphous structure (AMO) 2) the desulfurization studies for the removal of sulfur compounds. Zinc oxide with different nano-scale morphologies may result in various porosities with different adsorption capabilities. A tunable shape microwave synthesis of ZnO nano-spheres in a co-solvent mixture is presented. The ZnO nano-sphere material is investigated as a desulfurizing sorbent in a fixed bed reactor in the temperature range 200 to 400 °C and compared with ZnO nanorods and platelet-like morphologies. Fresh and sulfided materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET specific surface area, pore volume, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The tunable shape microwave synthesis of ZnO presents a high sulfur sorption capacity at temperatures as low as 200 °C which accounts for a three and four fold enhancement over the other preparations presented in this work, and reached 76 % of the theoretical sulfur capacity (TSC) at 300 °C. Another ZnO material with a bimodal micro- and mesopore size distribution investigated as a desulfurizing sorbent presents a sorption capacity that reaches 87% of the theoretical value for desulfurization at 400 °C at breakthrough time. A deactivation model that considers the activity of the solid reactant was used to fit the experimental data. Good agreement between the experimental breakthrough curves and the model predictions are obtained. Manganese oxides are a type of metal oxide materials commonly used in catalytic applications. Little is known about the adsorption capabilities for the removal of sulfur compounds. One of these manganese oxides; amorphous manganese oxide (AMO) is highly promising material for low temperature sorption processes. Amorphous manganese oxide (AMO) has been used in catalytic processes such as for the catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol, the preferential oxidation of CO, and for the capture of formate species. This chapter explores the possibility of using AMO in sorption processes for the removal of two contaminants; H 2S and COS in the temperature range 200 - 400 °C.

Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials with tailored properties are regarded as a fundamental element in the development of future science and technology. Research is still ongoing into the nanosized construction elements required to create functional solids. The recently developed technique, nanocasting, has great advantage over others in terms of the synthesis of special nanostructured materials by the careful choice of suitable elements and nanoengineering steps. This new book summarizes the recent developments in nanocasting, including the principles of nanocasting, syntheses of novel nanostructured materials, characterization methods, detailed synthetic recipes and further possible development in this area. The book focuses on the synthesis of porous solids from the viewpoint of methodology and introduces the science of nanocasting from fundamental principles to their use in synthesis of various materials. It starts by outlining the principles of nanocasting, requirements to the templates and precursors and the tools needed to probe matter at the nanoscale level. It describes how to synthesize nano structured porous solids with defined characteristics and finally discusses the functionalization and application of porous solids. Special attention is given to new developments in this field and future perspectives. A useful appendix covering the detailed synthetic recipes of various templates including porous silica, porous carbon and colloidal spheres is included which will be invaluable to researchers wanting to follow and reproduce nanocast materials. Topics covered in the book include: * inorganic chemistry * organic chemistry * solution chemistry * sol-gel and interface science * acid-base equilibria * electrochemistry * biochemistry * confined synthesis The book gives readers not only an overview of nanocasting technology, but also sufficient information and knowledge for those wanting to prepare various nanostructured materials without needing to search the available literature.
