This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) generated from adsorption of the tridentate adsorbate having a cyclohexane ring as a platform were studied. The first generation of these SAMs was derived form cyclohexane-cis,cis-1,3,5-triyltrimethanethiol (CyTSH) and (cis,cis-1,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane-1,3,5-triyl)trimethanethiol (3C1CyTSH). Thin films prepared by the adsorption of these molecules onto the surface of gold were characterized by ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). CyTSH was found to generate multilayer thin films with many unbound thiol species and oxidized sulfur moieties (e.g., disulfides and sulfone). In contrast, 3C1CyTSH was found to generate monolayer films in which ~90% of the thiols were bound to the surface of gold (~10% unbound), and there were no oxidized sulfur species. In comparing CyTSH and 3C1CyTSH, the methyl groups of 3C1CyTSH impart rigidity to the structure, which significantly enhances the chemisorption of sulfur to the surface of gold. Ellipsometric measurements and analysis by XPS indicate that the thickness of the SAM formed from 3C1CyTSH is ~5 Å. The second generation of these SAMs generated from the analogs of the R3C6H6(CH2SH)3 (abbreviated as 3CnCyTSH) where R = -(CH2)nH and n = 1, 3, 8 and 13 were also examined. Characterization of the SAMs revealed that all sulfur atoms of these tridentane adsorbates are bound to the surface of gold and generated loosely packed monolayer thin films with lower packing densities of the alkyl chains than a normal alkanethiolate SAM (C18SH). The trends in packing density and conformational order for these SAMs decreased as follows: C18SH ” 3C13CyTSH > 3C8CyTSH > 3C3CyTSH. A preliminary study of the thermal stability of this series of SAMs by XPS measurements has shown that the tridentate adsorbates (3CnCyTSH) are more stable than the normal alkanethiolate SAM (C18SH), a characteristic that is attributable to the chelating effect. Finally, a new pyridyl-based adsorbate (C18OPDSH) was synthesized and used to form SAMs. This SAM was characterized and the data was compared to those generated from the normal alkanethiol C18SH and C18OBDSH. XPS spectra display that a lone electron pair of pyridyl nitrogen atom of C18OPDSH interacts weakly with gold surface with some unbound thiols on the film. Both C18OPDSH and C18OBDSH adsorbates generate loosely and disordered packed thin films when compared to a normal alkanethiol (C18SH). The evaluation of the thermal stability using XPS measurement indicates that the C18OPDSH SAM is more stable when compared to both C18OBDSH and C18SH SAMs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) consist of densely packed long-chain organic molecules, which are chemisorbed on metal substrates through a sulfur head group. The purpose of this work, is to study the arrangement and structure of SAMs by IR, XPS, NEXAFS, STM, Ellipsometry and contact angle. While the first group of triptycenethiols and the second group of triarylaminethiols show a formation of disordered films on the gold surface, the third group of alkanethioacetates shows the formation of highly ordered monolayers. A further adsorption to upright oriented molecules is hindered due to kinetic effects. In the case of azo-molecules it is shown that the photoisomerization process is not reversible. These molecules are not able to form highly ordered monolayers on the gold surface due to the critical effect of azo-moiety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Review of Developing Environmentally Friendly Lubricants A push from environmentally savvy consumers along with recent changes in governmental regulations have paved the way for a marketplace of products with high levels of environmental performance. Fueled by the growing demand for biobased lubricants, Environmentally Friendly and Biobased Lubricants highlights the development of environmentally friendly additives that are compatible with environmental regulations and describes the approaches being used in this emerging area. Derived from research topics shared over the years at various technical sessions of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) Annual Meetings, the book includes a critical assessment of gaps and weaknesses in the field of environmentally friendly fluids and biobased lubricants. Each chapter is written by authors selected from the environmentally friendly fluids and biobased lubricants sessions of STLE and also incorporates input from prominent researchers invited to take part in the book. Expert contributors discuss the control, production, usage, and disposal of lubricants; factor in related policies, laws, and regulations around the world; and include case studies demonstrating the uses and values of commercially viable biobased lubricants. The book is divided into five sections that cover advanced environmentally friendly base oils and feedstocks, biobased hydraulic lubricants and biodegradability, chemically/enzymatically modified environmentally friendly base oils, vegetable oil–based environmentally friendly fluids, and additives for environmentally friendly fluids.

Book excerpt: Through molecular simulations we have observed that the surface of gold nanoparticles become highly corrugated by the adsorption of alkanethiolate self assembled monolayers (SAMs). Furthermore, as the temperature is increased, the SAMs dissolve into the gold nanoparticle, creating a liquid mixture at temperatures much lower than the melting temperature of the gold nanoparticle. By analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles at temperatures below the melting point of gold, with different SAM chain lengths and surface coverage properties, we have determined that the system is metastable. The model and computational results that provide support for this hypothesis are presented in this paper.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the preparation and wetting properties of two-component self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) obtained by the competitive adsorption of one short-chain (HS(CH2)1OSh) and one long-chain (HS(CH2)21LG) alkanethiol onto gold from dilute ethanolic solutions. The four possible combinations of the tail groups CH3 and CH20H were investigated: Sh = CH3/Lg = CH20H, Sh = CH2OH/Lg = CH3, SH = CH2OH/Lg = CH2OH, and Sh = CH3/Lg = CH3. The compositions of these SAMs are not the same as the compositions of the solutions from which they were formed, and the relationship between these compositions suggests that the SAMs have partially phase separated. Contact angles with water and hexadecane, however, show that significant disorder still remains in the interfacial region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable development of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) has led to their emerging use in active matrix flat-panel displays, radio frequency identification cards, and sensors. Exploring one class of OTFTs, Organic Field-Effect Transistors provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary survey of the present theory, charge transport studies, synthetic methodology, materials characterization, and current applications of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Covering various aspects of OFETs, the book begins with a theoretical description of charge transport in organic semiconductors at the molecular level. It then discusses the current understanding of charge transport in single-crystal devices, small molecules and oligomers, conjugated polymer devices, and charge injection issues in organic transistors. After describing the design rationales and synthetic methodologies used for organic semiconductors and dielectric materials, the book provides an overview of a variety of characterization techniques used to probe interfacial ordering, microstructure, molecular packing, and orientation crucial to device performance. It also describes the different processing techniques for molecules deposited by vacuum and solution, followed by current technological examples that employ OTFTs in their operation. Featuring respected contributors from around the world, this thorough, up-to-date volume presents both the theory behind OFETs and the latest applications of this promising technology.
