Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passengers cancelling their tickets for Titanic’s maiden voyage out of apprehension; a famous social reformer who died on Titanic, warned in 1911 that he would be in danger from water in April 1912; inhabitants of the remote islands of Fiji aware of the sinking before reports of the collision reached the Pacific; a dying girl who, on 14 April 1912, ‘sees’ a big ship sinking in the water and mysteriously knows the name of the violinist in Titanic’s orchestra. These are just a few of the numerous claims to psychic foreknowledge of the ship's sinking. Within days of the widely-publicised disaster of 1912, stories began circulating of extraordinary omens and individuals who supposedly had supernatural premonitions of the disaster. Furthermore, four fictional works – one dating as far back as twenty-six years – came to be seen as anticipating the disaster. Between 1960 and 2006, five major commentators published extended analyses of the alleged premonitions, none of which is now easily accessible to an English readership. This book examines them all in detail. The whole treatment of the matter opens up fascinating questions concerning the paranormal, but also raises and leaves unresolved crucial issues specific to premonitions and how they can be legitimately examined. Readers are left to make their own judgement on Titanic premonitions.

Book excerpt: Some dreams and premonitions are prophetic. They came true in the life of many eminent world personalities like Julius Caesar, Abraham Lincoln, Adolf Hitler, Mark Twain, H.G.Wells and John Lennon foretelling death, calamities and disasters with pin-point accuracy. Thus, to discount them as being coincidental is not only preposterous, but also defying divinity. The present book turns the spotlight on a wide range of dreams and extra-sensory perceptions covering wars, crimes, discoveries and murders.

Book excerpt: "Larry Dossey is one of America's most important thinkers. When he talks, I listen."—Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love In his New York Times bestseller Healing Words, Dr. Dossey investigated why patients surrounded by prayer healed faster and more completely than patients who were not. Now, in The Science of Premonitions, Dossey uses cutting-edge science to make a convincing case that premonitions are real, common, and helpful. Then Dossey explores research on mindfulness and meditation to show readers how they can cultivate and take advantage of premonitions. Packed with compelling case studies and thought-provoking findings, this is a book for the skeptical mind and the believer's heart, and will be greeted warmly by, as Deepak Chopra said, "anyone who is interested in knowing about the deeper meaning of our existence." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psyche’s Exile: an empirical odyssey in search of the soul. “Psyche” means “soul” in Greek, and “psychology” literally means ‘the study of the soul.’ For over a century American psychology has gone in precisely the opposite direction. Soul = mind, and mind = brain with no exceptions! This reductionist paradigm is challenged in this book as Professor Kroth reviews eight politically incorrect, ‘forbidden’ databases in his empirical pursuit of the immortal soul of the ages: near-death experiences, deathbed visions, precognitive dreams, premonitions, synchronicity, telepathy, states of possession, just to name a few. The journey leads to a fascinating rediscovery of the soul. Reviews “Psyche’s Exile . . is an absolute treasure trove of carefully collected experiential and experimental data spanning the research areas of anthropology, sociology, religion, spirituality, psychology, and physics. Although we are still some human evolutionary time away from experimentally proving the existence of the human soul, there is certainly enough good data available at present to make it a viable working hypothesis. Dr. Kroth is dedicated to his craft as a professional explorer of nature in its many forms. For myself, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to my scientific colleagues and my friends.” —William A. Tiller, Ph.D., professor of physics: Stanford University; Author of Science and Human Transformation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known as the longtime writer of the Mathematical Games column for Scientific American—which introduced generations of readers to the joys of recreational mathematics—Martin Gardner has for decades pursued a parallel career as a devastatingly effective debunker of what he once famously dubbed "fads and fallacies in the name of science." It is mainly in this latter role that he is onstage in this collection of choice essays. When You Were a Tadpole and I Was a Fish takes aim at a gallery of amusing targets, ranging from Ann Coulter's qualifications as an evolutionary biologist to the logical fallacies of precognition and extrasensory perception, from Santa Claus to The Wizard of Oz, from mutilated chessboards to the little-known "one-poem poet" Langdon Smith (the original author of this volume's title line). The writings assembled here fall naturally into seven broad categories: Science, Bogus Science, Mathematics, Logic, Literature, Religion and Philosophy, and Politics. Under each heading, Gardner displays an awesome level of erudition combined with a wicked sense of humor.

Book excerpt: "Brimming over with wit and insight…Fresh and fascinating." —Dan Rather Everyone from suffragists to their opponents; radicals, reformers, and capitalists; critics of technology and modern life; racists and xenophobes and champions of racial and ethnic equality; editorial writers and folk singers, preachers and poets found moral and cultural lessons in the sinking of the Titanic. In a new edition that both commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of the disaster and elaborates, in a revised afterword, on the ship's continued impact on the public imagination (evidenced by the Titanic mania evoked by James Cameron's 1997 film), Steven Biel explores the Titanic in all its complexity and contradictions.

We catch glimpses of this not only in the ordinary experiences of life, but also through extraordinary and unusual encounters with mystery. Mysticism is the awareness of our reality.

Book excerpt: Acts 2:16-17 King James Version (KJV) 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: ----- I was asked to share some of the memories that I have of Heaven and some Heavenly Encounters. Let me tell you, that as a child I was not very nice... I was mean and selfish...that is when my first Near Death Experience happened... My mom had bought us kids Flintstones vitamins with iron. She would give us kids one a day. and I used to sneak and take a whole bunch of them like candy. I thought that they were pretty and tasted sweet so I ate lots and lots. Over a period of time, I started feeling sleepy, very sleepy and my arms felt really tight. I was scared and didn't want to tell mom for fear that I would get into trouble. So I went to my bed and fell asleep. BOY DID I!

The others are proven investigators in the field. It is clear from their analyses that SIDS parents experience premonitions of doom nearly ten times more often than parents whose babies do not die. Clearly this is a signal for continued intensive study of the phenomenon.

It sounds like a plot point in a superhero fantasy film, but this intriguing resource reveals there might be more truth to it than fiction. Ancient history, including the Greeks' oracles, the Ides of March, and Joan of Arc, provides compelling context. Reports of premonitions and out-of-body experiences have been ample enough for the government to get involved. These riveting accounts will make readers ponder the facts and question whether these phenomenon are coincidence or something else entirely.
