Book excerpt: A preliminary assessment was made of the VTO thrust requirements for a supersonic (Type B) aircraft with a Lift plus Lift/Cruise propulsion system. A baseline aircraft with a takeoff gross weight (TOGW) of 13 608 kg (30,000 lb) was assumed. Pitch, roll, and yaw control thrusts (i.e., the thrusts needed for aircraft attitude control in the flight hover mode) were estimated based on a specified set of maneuver acceleration requirements for V/STOL aircraft. Other effects (such as installation losses, suckdown, reingestion, etc.), which add to the thrust requirements for VTO were also estimated. For the baseline aircraft, the excess thrust required for attitude control of the aircraft during VTO and flight hover was estimated to range from 36.9 to 50.9 percent of the TOGW. It was concluded that the total thrust requirements for the aircraft/propulsion system are large and significant. In order to achieve the performance expected of this aircraft/propulsion system, reductions must be made in the excess thrust requirements. Turney, G. E. and Allen, J. L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary designs were developed for four generically different V/STOL airplane concepts. Two of the airplanes used lift/cruise fans and were designed to satisfy high altitude, subsonic Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mission requirements. The other two airplanes used different jet lift and lift/cruise propulsion concepts and were designed for supersonic, Deck Launched Intercept (DLI) mission requirements. The sensitivities of each airplane to provisions for flying qualities were evaluated and were related to selected flying qualities characteristics. The study outlines a procedure and methodology that can be followed in future studies for assessing design sensitivity to flying qualities. The assessment procedure can be relatively simple in hover and cruise flight regimes, but may require extensive analysis in forward flight and transition flight regimes. Generally design sensitivities were found to be configuration specific, since takeoff gross weight sensitivity to thrust margin and propulsion control provisions can vary among different types of propulsion systems. Mission sensitivities were less variant between airplanes designed for similar missions. Design sensitivities to hover control power were by far the most significant to V/STOL design, and support a high priority need for satisfactory VTOL control power criteria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.

Book excerpt: A flight investigation was performed with the Dornier DO-31 VTOL to evaluate the performance, handling qualities, and operating characteristics that are considered to be important in the operation of a commercial VTOL transport in the terminal area. The DO-31, a 20,000 kilogram transport, has a mixed jet propulsion system; main engines with nozzles deflect from a cruise to a hover position, and vertical lift engines operated below 170 knots. This VTOL mode incorporates pitch and roll attitude and yaw rate stabilization. The tests concentrated on the transition, approach, and vertical landing. The mixed jet propulsion system provided a large usable performance envelope that enabled simulated IFR approaches to be made on 7 deg and 12 deg glide slopes. In these approaches management of thrust magnitude and direction was a primary problem, and some form of integrating the controls will be necessary. The handling qualities evaluation pointed out the need for additional research of define flight path criteria. The aircraft had satisfactory control and stability in hover out of ground effect. The recirculation effects in vertical landing were large below 15 meters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center is exploring the optimum thrust-vector angle on aircraft. Simple aerodynamic performance models for various phases of aircraft flight are developed and optimization equations and algorithms are presented in this report. Results of optimal angles of thrust vectors and associated benefits for various flight regimes of aircraft (takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, final approach, and landing) are given. Results for a typical wide-body transport aircraft are also given. The benefits accruable for this class of aircraft are small, but the technique can be applied to other conventionally configured aircraft. The lower L/D aerodynamic characteristics of fighters generally would produce larger benefits than those produced for transport aircraft.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of lift-roll coupling on the handling qualities of hovering VTOL aircraft using differential thrust for roll control were assessed in a piloted simulation study in the Ames six-degrees-of-freedom motion simulator. The configuration tested has three vertical thrust sources, one on the roll axis and two laterally displaced from the roll axis, with a thrust distribution of 25/50/25. The outboard thrust sources were modulated to provide roll control whereas all three provided height control. Maximum thrust-to-weight ratio was varied together with a coupling parameter that combined roll-inertia, weight, and engine location. Results showed that handling qualities are affected not only by the occurrence of lift-roll coupling (dependent on both variables) but also by the severity of the coupling (dependent on the coupling parameter alone). However, the advantages of differential thrust for control can be retained with careful design.
