Book excerpt: The aircraft was operated at gross weights up to 10,400 lb, up to 11, 340 feet density altitude and at a lateral center of gravity (cg) range from one inch right to approximately three inches left. The asymmetric loadings were caused by the various combinations of armament configurations. The change in equivalent flat plate area compared to the clean aircraft for each configuration varied as a function of airspeed. At 130 knots true airspeed (KTAS), the increased flat plate area was 4.2 square feet for the Launcher configuration, 4. 8 square feet for the TOW configuration, 6.6 square feet for the Hellfire and Hellfire/TOW configurations, and 7.8 square feet for the Stinger/Hellfire/TOW configuration. The increase in flat plate area for the Stinger/Hellfire/TOW configuration reduced maximum level flight speed for normal rated power by approximatley 8 KTAS. With the exception of the two armament related shortcomings listed below, the handling qualities and the reactions to system failures of the AH-1S (MC) were not significantly changed by the asymmetric loading of the various armament configurations. Four shortcomings were noted and follow in decreasing order of importance: (1) the high left rolling response to a sudden engine failure at power settings above 75% torque; (2) the undesirable maneuvering stability characteristics above 1.4 g's; (3) insufficient left pedal margin available in right sideward flight above 10 knots in the Hellfire and Hellfire/TOW configurations; and (4) insufficient left pedal margin available for ball-centered forward flight below 30 KCAS in the armament configurations with left lateral cf offset. A CAUTION is recommended for inclusion in the operator's manual dealing with.

One deficiency noted during the evaluation was the lack of crashworthiness of the external fuel tanks. Four shortcomings associated with the installation of the external fuel tanks were found.

Book excerpt: A Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation was conducted for the AH-64A equipped with the Air-to-Air Stinger (ATAS) missile system. The first phase was an evaluation of the effects of the ATAS installation on the handling qualities on the AH-64A. The second phase was a human factors evaluation of the installation of a fully operational preproduction ATAS system using captive flight training Stinger missiles, Tests were flown in the eight Hellfire missile configuration. Two Stinger missiles with launcher and mounting hardware were mounted at each wing tip. Test results were compared with data obtained during previous testing and evaluated against the AH-64 System Specification. Handling qualities of the AH-64A with the ATAS system installed were quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated and found to be essentially the same as the basic AH- 64A. Specific shortcomings associated with the ATAS system were: poor integration of the Air-to-Air Stinger missile system, which is not directly compatible with the MIL STD 1553 data bus of the AH-64; insufficient ATAS sighting symbology, which does not provide the copilot/gunner with accurate missile seeker line of sight relative to the selected sight line of sight except in FLIR wide field of view; reduction in storage space imposed by the ATAS installation in the aft storage bay; location of the repositioned chaff fire switch on the cyclic hand grip; and the manual reset feature of the ATAS missile sequencing logic. The absence of an altitude encoding feature in the installation of the AN/APX-100(V) transponder was a shortcoming not associated with the ATAS modification. Seven recommendations specific to the ATAS installation are made.

The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity was tasked to provide quantitative and qualitative data on the handling qualities of the helicopter, obtain limited level flight performance data, and obtain limited handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed. The test helicopter was a production AH-1G helicopter (212 tail rotor) modified with an ATAFCS mockup and carrying eight HELLFIRE missiles. Six productive flight test hours were flown in six flights. No shortcomings or deficiencies attributable to HMMS and ATAFCS installation were found. The AH-1G helicopter, with HMMS and ATAFCS installed, exhibits an additional equivalent flat plate area of 4.0 ft2 compared to the standard AH-1Q helicopter. The handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed are essentially the same as the production AH-1G helicopter. (Author).
