Book excerpt: This report details the procedures and findings for an intensive archeological investigation of 30 floodwater retarding structures proposed to be built by the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service within the Dry Creek Watershed in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. Field investigations of the 1,780 acres involved in these 30 impoundments produced information on 5 prehistoric archeological sites, 9 minor prehistoric and/or historic artifact scatters, and several areas where map or informant historic suggested that there may be, or may have been, archeological sites or materials. Twenty three of the impoundments fell into the category of negative findings: i.e. there were no archeological resources or sites found within the impoundment boundaries. Four impoundments were classed as having limited findings with some indication or strong suspicion of archeological sites. Three impoundments produced definite indications of archeological sites and historic sites. Additional work is recommended for a possible bluff shelter site, 34 Ln-84 within Impoundment 25 and for a possible open campsite, 34 Ln-80 within impoundment 59. Because of the limited findings or the minimal potential for significant archeological sites in impoundments 2, 4, 9, 11 through 17, 20 through 24, 26 through 29, 33 through 37, 39, 42, 43c, and 45, no additional archeological investigations are recommended for these 28 impoundments.
