It is important because it is directly associated with the survival of human race. That is why marriage is a top most concern for the society. To tie in a knot is quite easy but it's difficult to and maintains a healthy and satisfaction relationship with the partner. This topic covers marital adjustment, maladjustment, marital satisfaction and dissatisfaction. So, many disciplines like sociology, psychology, home science and education are involved in finding out various constructs of marital satisfaction. Definition of Marriage Rosen-Grandon et al., (2004) has outlined, "marriage has been delineated as one of the most vital and essential human relationships. It provides the advantage of child rearing for the next generation and form the primary structure for establishing a family relationship". Sexton (1992) outlined, "Marriage as a legal term describing bound relationship regarding people so as to meet three differing kinds of needs: emotional, sexual and psychological". Glenn and Weaver (1979) outlined, "Marriage is found to be one in all the strongest correlates of happiness and well being". Argyle and Furnham (1983) outlined, "Marriage is that the greatest supply of social support for many individuals quite friends or together with emotional and married support and companionship". 18 Kennedy, Glares, and Glaser et al. (1990) defined for those who are married, the spouse is involved in and instrumental in a wide range of other satisfaction including sex and leisure. Being in love is the greatest source of positive emotion. Marriage is a very important from health point of view, as it results in better health behavior. Married people drink and smoke less have a better diet and do what the doctor orders. Marital satisfaction Marital satisfaction is linked to the happiness of the partners which is shared with, resolution of conflict and emotional support. Further, one can say that, it is one of the most important features which lead to the overall satisfaction in marital life of the person (Fowers & Olson, 1993, Argyle & Furnham, 1983). It reflects the suitable advantages and outlay of benefits in marriage to a particular person. Similarly, if one perceives greater benefits of marriage, one can achieve greater and more satisfying with in marital life and with the partner (Stone & Shackelford, 2007). The marital relationship is one of the most significant and unique relation among all human relationships. It is not only a mere convention, but also an implicit condition in all human society. The relationship between husband and wife is a very specific context and involves a complex process of adjustment. Thus, one can say that satisfaction with one's marriage is an important component of well-being (Byadgi, 2011). Definition of marital satisfaction Bhar and Leigh (1978) defined, "marital satisfaction as subjective evaluation of the overall quality of marriage. It is a degree to which the needs, desires and expectations are met in,

Book excerpt: This book should be of interest to scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners alike. Scholars, researchers, and students of personal relationship development will recognize in this book the first serious attempt in over 40 years to do a large-scale, longitudinal study of premarital factors that predict premarital breakup and marital quality; they should also appreciate our attempt to develop a theoretical rationale for predicted paths and to test those paths with the best available statistical tools. Practitioners-while generally not as interested in the intricacies of the statistical results-will find much that is useful to them as they help individuals and couples make decisions about their intimate relationships, their readiness for marriage, and how to increase the probability for marital success. Teachers, family life educators, premarital counselors, and clergy will find helpful our “principles for practice,” particularly as described in Chapter 9, as they teach and counsel couples in any premarital situation. My interest in the development of relationships from premarital to marital probably began when I got married in 1972 and started to notice all of the characteristics my wife and I brought from our respective families and how our “new beginning” as a married couple was in many ways the continuation of our premarital relationship, only more refined and more intense. My professional interest began when I did my doctoral dissertation in 198 1 on premarital predictors of early marital satisfaction (the results of that study are reported in Chapter 8).

This 2002 volume presents research from a variety of disciplines that examine personal relationships on all three levels. The first section focuses on the factors that influence individuals to enter, maintain, and dissolve relationships. The second section emphasizes ongoing processes that characterize relationships and focuses on issues such as arguing and sacrificing. The third and final section demonstrates that the process of stability and change are embedded in social, cultural, and historical contexts. Chapters address cultural universals as well as cross-cultural differences in relationship behaviors and outcomes. The emergence of relational forms, such as the interaction between people and computers, is also explored. Stability and Change in Relationships will be of interest to a broad range of fields, including psychology, sociology, communications, gerontology, and counselling.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Marriage is a social institution known to exist among the human race ever since the human civilization has evolved. It is been unique to human beings as no other living being shows the complex and organised living system of family and marriage. Family being the essential aspect of human culture represents the distinctiveness and prominence of this intimate relationship that is established in our society. In this sense, marriage offers the vital structure for creating family relationships which leads in expansion, by way of producing the next generation (Larson & Holman, 1994). Marriage is considered as a lifelong union between partners which is both legally and socially accepted and it contains commitment from partners in terms of sexual, economic and social rights (Bachrach, Hindin, & Thomas, 2000). Accordingly, marriage can be defined as a social union tied with rights and duties for husband and wife towards their children and sharing economic responsibilities while living together. All the cultures across the world have shown evidence of marriage. No matter what culture we belong to, more than 90% of us are expected to marry once in our lifetime (Epstein & Guttman, 1984). Marriage is the start of a new endeavour in an individual's life and subsequently it marks the first step towards the fulfilment of social expectations and responsibility. Although, getting married is no longer a requirement for social acceptance and advancement (Cherlin, 2004). In the past people used to marry for all the social status marriage guaranteed to them but things have changed today. It has become more of a personal accomplishment and a stage in self growth and development (Bulcraft, Bulcraft, Bradley, & Simpson, 2000). However, it still provides legal and social approval for having children in third world countries. It won't be wrong to state that marriage changes the couples' status permanently. They become one family unit that share all the social, legal, financial and emotional responsibilities towards each other and bring in the next generation. It is just not only a social obligation one enters due to societal expectations but also, it is equally vital for the personal satisfaction and development of an individual. It is universally acknowledged that all social institutions have an impact on the well-being of an individual, interestingly, not all have the equal degree. Marriage is one such institution which is deeply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of family studies has recently seen the development of a more specialized focus on the character of particular relationships. The nature of these relationships may take many forms but typically involves individuals who view themselves as a unit with a long-term commitment to continue their relationship. Traditionally, at least in western societies, families are defined in terms of two parents living together with responsibility for rearing their children. However, these so-called nuclear families are becoming a rarer phenomenon. Single-parent families, childless couples, lesbian or gay male couples are also all represented in the broad mix of relations referred to as families. Each of the chapters in this book deals with a primary relationship issue. These include: issues of early marriage how young relationships become enduring relationships parent and child relations conflict between partners the interface between work and family life marital quality and maintenance divorce and its impact on the family aging and older families This volume provides a useful reference for professionals whose research and/or clinical practice focuses on family relationship issues. This book is also intended for advanced students in the areas of sociology, close relationships and family sciences. Families as Relationships is one of a series of paperbacks dedicated to the study and application of processes by which individuals relate to each other in social and family settings. Each book provides an expanded and up-to-date version of a section in the original Handbook of Personal Relationships (second edition) edited by Steve Duck.
