Book excerpt: The first year of college may be a salient time period for the development of drinking practices in college populations. While parenting styles have been associated with global self-regulation, resistance to peer influence and college student drinking behaviors, a comprehensive evaluation of these relationships has yet to be established. Researchers have demonstrated that self-regulation acts as both a predictor and moderator of resistance to peer influence, which has been shown to be a more proximal predictor of drinking behaviors. While relationships between global self-regulation, parenting, and drinking have been empirically established, less attention has been given to specific methods of selfregulation such as regulatory focus. Thus, the current study examined the relationships between parenting styles, two modes of regulatory focus (i.e., promotion and prevention focus), resistance to peer influence and drinking behaviors in first year college students. It was hypothesized that regulatory focus and resistance to peer influence would be partial mediators between parenting styles and drinking behaviors, such that parenting styles would predict regulatory focus, which would in turn predict resistance to peer influence; subsequently, peer influence would predict drinking behaviors. It was also hypothesized that each mode of regulatory focus would moderate the manner in which resistance to peer influence predicts drinking behaviors. Finally, given that researchers have also found race to be a common influential factor on all variables within the current study, racial differences across the aforementioned relationships were also examined. The current study sampled 323 college freshmen from a large southeastern college student population. A structural equation modeling approach was used to examine all variables of interest. Results indicated that promotion-focused self-regulation and resistance to peer influence sequentially mediated relationships between authoritative and permissive parenting styles and drinking behaviors. Prevention focused self-regulation was not associated with resistance to peer influence; thus, these constructs did not sequentially mediate relationships between parenting and drinking behaviors. Results also indicated that when resistance to peer influence mediated the relationship between a given parenting style and drinking behavior, it was also moderated by a mode of regulatory focus. Finally, while race was not shown to moderate either sequential mediation model, the influence of race on individual constructs was shown to be moderated by regulatory focus. Results of this study further inform literature on the effects of social learning constructs on drinking behaviors within the first year of matriculating to college. These results also provided further knowledge on what social (i.e., parenting, peer influence) and internal (regulatory focus) components may be important targets in alcohol interventions for college freshmen. --Page ii.

A total of 951 undergraduate students (freshman, sophomore, and junior) from a university in central China volunteered to fill out questionnaires in convenient classrooms. The extent of perceived peer pressure and corresponding drinking behavior were examined separately in subpopulations categorized by gender and peer groups (History major and Physical Education major). The mediational role of alcohol self-regulation self-efficacy on pressure- drinking association was also examined. Results have indicated gender differences and subgroup differences (HIST and PE) for perceived peer pressure. Pressure was significantly related to alcohol drinking frequency for both peer groups. Results from a path model indicated that perception of peer pressure was negatively correlated with alcohol self-regulation self-efficacy. Less alcohol drinking frequency was predicted by higher level of self-regulation self-efficacy. The results suggest that educational strategies could be developed to teach students social skills to resist pressure from peers.

Book excerpt: Failure in self-control has long been identified as a risk factor for problematic alcohol use among college students, as individuals who are less equipped or less able to regulate their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors use alcohol more frequently and are at greater risk for binge drinking. Recent findings suggest self-control depletion and motivation interact to determine performance on subsequent tasks that require self-control. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the ways self-control exertion and desires to use alcohol (approach inclinations) and desires to avoid using alcohol (avoidance inclinations) impact subsequent alcohol use behavior. Using ecological momentary assessment, the interaction of self-control exertion and alcohol motivation in the prediction of alcohol use behaviors was assessed in a sample of college drinkers. Daily monitoring assessments contained brief measures of alcohol-related behaviors, alcohol motivation, and self-control exertion and were administered five times daily for fourteen days. Results indicated that although self-control exertion interacted with alcohol motivation to predict drinking (controlling for drinking history, affect, and day of week), the relationship was not in the expected direction; higher self-control exertion among those high on both approach and avoidance motivation was associated was fewer number of drinks at the next measurement occasion. Findings highlight the need for consideration of the unique effects of both alcohol use motivation and self-control demand in the prediction of alcohol consumption, and draw attention to the need for further investigation into the complex interplay of these processes in daily life.

Book excerpt: Although alcohol use and related problems are highly prevalent in emerging adulthood overall, college students drink somewhat more than do their peers who do not attend college. The personal or social influences underlying this difference, however, are not yet well understood. The present study examined whether personality traits (i.e., self-regulation and sensation seeking) and peer influence (i.e., descriptive drinking norms) contributed to student status differences. At approximately age 22, 4-year college students (n = 331) and noncollege emerging adults (n = 502) completed web-based surveys, including measures of alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, personality, and social norms. College students drank only slightly more heavily. This small difference, however, reflected personality suppression. College students were lower in trait-based risk for drinking, and accounting for traits revealed a stronger positive association between attending college and drinking more heavily. Although noncollege emerging adults reported greater descriptive drinking norms for social group members, norms appeared to more strongly influence alcohol use among college students. Finally, despite drinking less, noncollege individuals experienced more alcohol-related problems. The association between attending college and drinking heavily may be larger than previously estimated, and it may be masked by biased selection into college as a function of both self-regulation and sensation seeking. Differing patterns of alcohol use, its predictors, and its consequences emerged for the college and noncollege samples, suggesting that differing intervention strategies may best meet the needs of each population.

Alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems are thought to be the one of the most significant concerns on college campuses in the United States. Young adults aged 18-24 years show the highest rates of alcohol use and also have the greatest percentage of problem drinkers, and the rates of binge drinking are higher among college students than for individuals in the same age range who do not attend college. Between 75%-90% of college students drink alcohol, and more than half report heavy or binge drinking. Binge drinking may lead to the experiencing of many negative consequences such as missing class, interpersonal conflict, and even death. In order to prevent or reduce binge drinking among college students, it is important to know the risk and protective factors for binge drinking Previous research has shown that peers' attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol are related to one's own alcohol consumption. In particular, the influence of same-age peers' behavior regarding alcohol use has been well documented. Contrary to the assumption that parents no longer exert any influence over their college-aged child's alcohol use behavior, previous research has found that parent factors may represent an important protective influence on late adolescent drinking. Parents may continue to influence their children's behavior regarding alcohol use via communication about expectancies, setting limits, and the transmission of values. However, there may be variation in the nature and substance of the parent-child communication about alcohol. Therefore, it is important to examine the nature and content of parent-child communication regarding alcohol use. The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of parental communication on college student binge drinking. The various consequences of binge drinking may be the most salient factors involving the student's decision to engage in binge drinking during college. Thus, it was hypothesized that expectations regarding the physical, social, legal and academic consequences of binge drinking will mediate the relationship between parental communication and binge drinking. These hypotheses were tested using 761 undergraduate students from a large, public university in the Southwest who completed an online survey assessing drinking behavior, including how often the participants talked to their parents about alcohol use and whether or not these communications included discussions about the consequences of heavy drinking. The findings revealed that frequent communication between parents and students actually increases the likelihood of binge drinking episodes. The indirect relationship between communication and binge drinking via communication about the consequences of heavy drinking failed to reach significance.

College students (N=127) who drank at least once during the previous three months reported on their alcohol use, their attitudes toward drinking, perceived drinking norms, relational self-construal, and demographics. Detailed information pertaining to participants' drinking and support social networks were elicited via an interview. It was hypothesized that perceived norms would be related to drinking such that norms reflecting higher levels of alcohol use would be related to more alcohol consumption. This hypothesis was supported. Additionally, the direct and moderating influence of social network characteristics (i.e., size, density, functioning) on alcohol use were examined in a series of regression models. In models not including the influence of norms, drinking networks that were larger were predictive of higher levels of alcohol use. Closeness with network members predicted higher levels of binge drinking. When norms were included in the models, only minimal support was found for the moderating influence of social network characteristics. Satisfaction within the drinking network moderated the influence of norms on alcohol use such that for males, there was stronger normative influence for those high in satisfaction. Relational self-construal was hypothesized as an intrapersonal moderator of norms. This was true for males only, such that higher levels of relational self-construal were related to stronger norm conformity. The present study represents the first step in understanding the complex impact of social networks on alcohol use among college students.

Although parental influence wanes during the college years, research suggests that parental behaviors in high school, including monitoring, alcohol-specific control (i.e., rules or communication), and problematic modeling of drinking, continue to predict their children's drinking even into college. This dissertation tests a model, developed by the author, that posits prospective associations between the parental behaviors discussed above and college student problematic drinking, mediated by student alcohol-related cognitions, namely, self-efficacy to avoid alcohol, negative alcohol expectancies, and peer drinking norms. Tests were conducted of the following main hypotheses: (1) parental behaviors in the senior year of high school are associated with a number of college freshmen's drinking outcomes, including heavy drinking, alcohol problems, and male and female binge drinking, after statistically controlling for significant covariates, such as gender, race, and past student drinking, and (2) each of the student alcohol-related cognitions mediates the relationships between parental behaviors and student drinking. Data to test these hypotheses were collected at one time point from an undergraduate population at a large, public university, and data on all measures was provided by student self-report (N = 292). Multiple regression analyses indicated that, for the most part, results were consistent with predictions. Greater maternal drinking was significantly and directly associated with greater student heavy drinking, and greater paternal drinking was significantly and directly associated with greater alcohol problems. Greater parental alcohol-specific monitoring was significantly and directly associated with lower heavy drinking and alcohol problems, while greater alcohol-specific rules was significantly and directly associated with lower heavy drinking and male binge drinking. Unexpectedly, greater alcohol-specific communication was significantly and directly associated with greater, not lower, student heavy drinking and alcohol problems and female binge drinking. Mediational analyses revealed that all three of the student alcohol-related cognitions mediated several relationships between parental behaviors and student drinking outcomes. Surprisingly, greater paternal drinking was significantly and indirectly associated with lower, not greater, student heavy drinking, as mediated by greater student negative alcohol expectancies. Methodological limitations notwithstanding, this study is one of the first to test a comprehensive mediated model of parental behaviors, student alcohol-related cognitions, and student drinking.

It is estimated that a large majority (83%) of college students use alcohol (Johnston, O Malley, Bachman, & Schulenberg, 2008). The negative consequences of alcohol consumption range broadly in both domain and degree of harm to the individual and society. Protective behavioral strategies (PBS) can be utilized to reduce the degree of negative consequences of alcohol consumption when people choose to drink. Anxiety sensitivity is the fear of the symptoms of anxiety including the fear of somatic symptoms, the fear of social consequences of anxiety, and the fear of losing control mentally (Reiss, Peterson, & Gursky, 1988). The study examined the relationships among alcohol consumption, anxiety sensitivity, PBS and the negative consequences of alcohol consumption among 706 college student drinkers in the southeastern United States. A weak positive correlation was found between anxiety sensitivity and PBS use. Amount of alcohol consumed emerged as a predictor of the negative consequences of alcohol consumption. PBS use emerged as a predictor of the negative consequences of alcohol consumption.
